Worklessness Master Class David Leeves Head of Community Sustainability Orbit East
Worklessness Master Class Overview The session The issue The case The scope The method (s) The results The future
Worklessness Masterclass Orbit s ambition Building Brighter Futures our Community Sustainability framework Worklessness Financial Inclusion Community Cohesion & Youth programmes Environment Health & well-being
Everything s going up The Issue E V E R Y T H I N G TIME
Rising unemployment The Issue
Rising prices The Issue
The Issue Unemployment rising disproportionately for u25 s 's 16-25's
The Issue
The Case By equipping our residents with the skills, confidence and up-to-date work experience we can to help them find and secure employment, increase their income and choices and above all, help maintain their tenancy.
The Case We can capitalise on the unique relationship we have with our residents and work across our many team disciplines, with suppliers/contractors and external agencies to tackle priority issues in priority areas.
The Case Preparing our residents and our businesses for the impact of the new welfare benefit reforms and preparing for the upturn (?) We re all in this together but some are more in it than others.
The Scope a wide range of opportunities
The Scope Key Skills to full-time Apprentices Entry level short courses Practical skills and volunteering Job specific courses with qualifications Actual jobs and work experience
The Scope Entry level short courses Non-threatening fun stuff e.g. cake decorating, party planning, jewellery making, aromatherapy, intro to psychology getting people interested, meeting with others, gaining confidence, sense of achievement, motivation, clearly flagged progression routes Practical skills Basic IT, first aid, child care, car / bike maintenance, gardening, job related e.g. CV and application form writing, presentation & interview skills.
The Scope Job specific courses CSCS cards, SIA card, Health & Safety, COSHH, manual handling, food hygiene, driving theory, till skills, customer service, sports coaching. Actual jobs and work experience. Work trials, apprenticeships (construction, office based) and jobs.
The Method
The Method This is an approach but make a start wherever you are now Make the business case up the line seek out like minded individuals make useful allies believe it and bang on about it at every opportunity. Talk to / survey residents about what they want often be news to them as do not associate us with this field.
The Method Not rocket science
The Method Research what s available locally Who the key players and providers are and team up with them in new specialist partnerships Definitely make contact with local Job Centre Plus Partnership Managers. Give the programme a name e.g. Launch into Learning Doorstep Learning Lift off
The Method Try something easy general interest, nonthreatening, entry level fun stuff first. Move on to practical skills basic IT is always popular, children's first aid, sports coaching Research local skills gaps and offer courses to address this e.g. what do local employers need?
The Method Use procurement process to broaden scope and support. Move into the apprenticeship agenda inhouse lots of info and popular profile Plug for: National Apprenticeship Service Check out Work Programme contractors Establish a different kind of relationship with your residents.
The Method BE FLEXIBLE as things rarely go to plan
The Results so far We have helped 126 people into training with 88 course completions 61 people have gained a recognised qualification 12 people have gone on into employment 10 apprenticeship jobs have been created 8 volunteering projects have been organised
The Results We have recruited and trained 10 construction skills apprentices on our Future Builders programme with 50 on the ride along phase. We are recruiting 10 office apprentices on our Business Futures programme We also have Green Futures and Sporting Futures components
Future Builders case study Dan and Nick Young Orbit residents with building as their brighter future
Future Builders case study A weekly wage 2-year college course with C&G maintenance operations qualification Dedicated tradesperson mentor Progress incentives PPE, tool kit, driving lessons Linked up to local special needs school project I didn t think anyone would give me this sort of chance. It s making me a better, more responsible person. My Mum s so proud of me
Future Builders case study Ride Along recruits Interview & Induction H&S / COSHH training Customer Care module Starter kit- PPE (Boots, Hat, Hi-Vis etc) Individual Advice and Guidance session Achievement log Certificate of completion Back to the floor day with Executive Team member
The Future The world has changed and will continue to do so but this brings new opportunities. It looks as if things will be getting worse before they get any better but we re here for the long haul. Funding cuts and Welfare Benefit Reforms will conspire against us but we have proven resilience. The Work Programme will be challenging for providers but watch this space.
Worklessness Master Class? That s for you to decide but are there any questions? david.leeves@orbit.org.uk
