2 Employability the programme After a focussed individual assessment of your needs we will tailor an Employability participation plan for you. This will be aimed at supporting you into sustained employment, an apprenticeship, or more advanced training (such as a further education course). Through group training sessions and one-to-one work with our specialist advisors, we will develop your confidence, help you improve your core skills, and offer you a greater insight into the type of job opportunities available in the Glasgow area. We will work with you in a supportive and friendly manner to help you to overcome areas that may have held you back in the past. Once we have developed your confidence and learned more about your strengths, aptitudes and ambitions, we will offer you a selection of suitable work-placements where you can develop your skills and confidence in a real work environment. This could be in an office, a hotel, a restaurant, a warehouse, a manufacturing environment, or a retail establishment. Each work-placement will be tailored to your individual needs. You will be given clear guidance as to how to get to your placement using public transport. We always try to secure placements convenient for daily transport from home to placement. ENVIRONMENT : Our offices are comfortable and well equipped. There are open areas, with access to computer facilities with internet access and a tutor on hand to assist. and side rooms for individual counselling and quiet study. There is access to hot and cold drinks. There are syndicate room facilities for group work and individual rooms for one-to one career counselling.. HOURS : Hours at M I Technologies Ltd are : Monday to Thursday (half hour for lunch) Friday Hours at work-placement will vary depending on the location, but will be a minimum of 30 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours. WAGES: While on Employability year olds not in receipt of state benefits will receive a Young Persons Allowance of 55 per week. Participants aged 18 years and over and in receipt of state benefits will receive a Training Allowance paid directly by DWP. Everyone on this programme will receive travel costs in accordance with Employability Fund Operating Rules.
3 ABSENCE Rules on absence reporting will be explained at Induction. Absence without proper reason may lead to the Allowance being reduced. TIME-SCALE: You can spend up to 13 weeks on the Employability Programme. ACTIVITY : Typical activities undertaken during the Employability programme include - Employability Programme Induction Health & Safety induction including tour of the building and fire exits Aims and objectives of the programme Rules and Regulations including timekeeping and attendance Development of Action Plan and Individual Training Plan (one to one) Introduction to training methods and materials Introduction to IT / computer facilities Individual strengths and weaknesses (SWOT analysis) Group exercises and team building Registering with My World of Work Using My World of Work to its full potential Developing your CV Further Jobsearch skills / using newspapers and internet job sites Mock Interview and interview skills How to apply for jobs on-line Handling a telephone interview practical tips Keyboard Skills / Word processing skills Discussion one-to-one of placement / work choices Communication skills, written and oral, including telephone Numeracy skills in the context of a real work environment Employers expectations and working with others Problem solving and planning work tasks Flexibility and adaptability Developing self confidence and assertiveness Personal presentation looking the part
4 The Employability Programme also offers a chance to gain some real experience to see what kind of work environment would suit you. Below are some examples of what you would do at a work-placement:- Placement in Administration Report to Workplace Ensure that Health and Safety guidelines are being followed Allotted morning tasks i.e. mail Take instruction from supervisor Input data on PC as required Answering in-coming calls, call transfer and message distribution Photocopying, filing and faxing Develop administration skills through hands on training Ensure that all daily tasks have been completed Collate outgoing mail Following good housekeeping practices through the day Keep copies of evidence and given tasks Placement in a Restaurant / Kitchen Report to workplace Change into Chef uniform and check personal hygiene (clean hands) Team briefing by head chef on menu for day and allocation of jobs Allocated to vegetable cleaning chopping and preparation Work through various tasks e.g. knife skills, temperature control testing. Learn some new skills e.g. how cut decorative tomatoes, presentation, and portion control Help with delivery of goods, storing away, labelling, refrigeration. Tidy out storage areas Help clean up work areas and dispose of any unused food or waste. Store away all implements, materials etc before end of shift Note tasks undertaken, take copy of menu, write date on it, and annotate areas where involved in preparation, keep as evidence for assessment visit.
5 Placement in a Warehouse Report to workplace Ensure Health and Safety guidelines are being followed Place rubbish out for morning collection Allocation of tasks by supervisor Following all given instructions including load and unloading of goods Check and book-in goods Check picking lists Use machinery safely and according to guidelines Leave the unit clean and tidy Placement in a Workshop Report to Workplace Take instruction from supervisor Follow all instruction while using tools and equipment Follow all Health and Safety guidelines Pack finished product ready for dispatching to customer Leave workshop clean and tidy
6 Placement in a Garage Report to Workplace Follow Health and Safety guidelines, organisational procedures and manufacturer s instructions Work with fully qualified mechanic Observing and learning new skills Ensure that equipment is stored in the correct location Valet customers vehicles Learn basic requirements, water, oil, tyre pressure, etc Clean-up and tidy workshop area at end of day
7 Placement in a Private Nursery Nursery Assistant Report to Workplace Change into uniform and check personal appearance and hygiene. Report to supervisor for daily task area e.g. Babyroom or 1-5 year olds. Assist in the children s arrival and any discussions or requests from parents. Carry out the tasks required e.g. Babyroom preparation of feeding materials and equipment, changing facilities and supplies, general hygiene and stimulating and playing with babies. Assisting with writing up reports on children s daily activities to issue to parents. Ensuring safety and security at all times. N.B. Employability participants would only assist in the above and would never be left unattended without a trained member of staff present. To keep a note of all daily routine and non-routine events as evidence for assessment visits. Placement in a Care Home Care Assistant Report to workplace Change into uniform and check personal appearance and hygiene. Report to Senior Care assistant to be allocated daily duties and reports. Allocated to a particular client to attend to their personal needs such as bathing, toileting and ensuring their morale is kept high. Assisting the clients with their menu choices and helping them with their feeding requirements. Helping with socialising and activity events. Check the clients for health issues and possibility assisting the nursing staff with any medical procedures. Assisting in writing up basic reports and charts Keeping personal diary of daily/weekly duties to be kept as evidence for assessment visit
8 Placement in a Retail Shop Shop Assistant Ensure personal appearance is satisfactory for establishment (personal clothing or uniform) Report to supervisor for daily update and briefing session Supervisor will allocate tasks such as Accepting goods delivered, checked and properly stored and rotated. Taking a daily stock-take of goods on display Replenishing stock on shop floor, and generally tidying shelves and display areas. Customer Care talking to, informing and serving the customer in a polite and professional manner. Discussing issues with other staff. Cash Control use of till for cash, credit and debit control. Staff training sessions e.g. security, health and safety, new supply lines or perhaps a special event or promotion General housekeeping Keeping a logbook on daily duties and tasks to be kept as evidence for assessment visit. Placement at a Landscaping Project Report to Workplace Wear the correct Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment. Report to the project supervisor for the allocation of duties. Follow Health & Safety guidelines, organisational procedures and manufacturers instructions for machines, remember what areas and machines are prohibited for your use. Work under supervision and with others at the project. Observe and learn new skills - Examples include grass-cutting using large and small mowers, strimming and brush cutting, pruning, planting, use of hand-tools, plant / tree identification and care. If the project is open to the public, remember to be aware of their safety, as well as your own Clean up tools and put them away at the end of the day. Keep a logbook of each day s activities as a record for assessment purposes
9 Qualifications: MI TECHNOLOGIES LTD The Employability programme offers you the opportunity to gain a range of recognised qualifications. We will agree an individual training plan that suits your needs. Below are examples of some of the qualifications available through the Employability programme: Core Skill in Numeracy Core Skill in Communications SQA Employability Skills Award Units from SVQs in Administration, Hospitality, Retail, Child-care, Health & Social Care Reviews: Your progress will be reviewed within first 2 weeks and thereafter on an four weekly basis. The review is carried out by an experienced member of staff, and when on work-placement, will include an input from the employer on your progress.. Progression: Our Employability Programme offers you dedicated personal assistance with making that important first step towards a job and a career. The most likely outcome from participating in our Employability programme is to move to a Job or to a Modern Apprenticeship. Our Employability Programme can also offer a useful preparation for a college course at Access, NC, HNC or HND level. Our Employability team will assist you with the college application process.
