3 Daniel Marshall Engineer Employer: TATA Steel Daniel Daniel left school at 16 to complete A-levels, and foresaw full-time university education as his preferred route into employment. However, being able to combine academic work with practical experience was very appealing and I realised that I could achieve this by undertaking the apprenticeship. I have now been at Coleg Sir Gâr for four years and I ve already completed my Higher National Certificate in mechanical engineering and I have now progressed to the BSc (Hons) course. What I particularly appreciate is that my tutors all have industrial experience and that the focus of work relates our studies to practical application. I anticipate completing my degree with the college over the next year which will provide me with a valuable mix of academic qualifications and practical experience.

4 What Apprenticeships are available? The Welsh Government supports Apprenticeships in Wales as they fuel the future essential skills base of our nation. 81% of businesses say employing apprentices makes their workplace more productive. Apprentices can do great things for their employers but they need the chance to work and train. Welsh Government pays the external training costs, leaving employers to pay only for the wage of the apprentice. Apprenticeships in Wales are open to everyone, for young learners and those wanting to change their career pathway. Apprentices need to be employed and have the commitment and determination to succeed. The length of an Apprenticeship varies depending on your past qualifications and the qualification being followed. Generally, Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete and they are available at three different levels to suit all learners. Foundation Apprenticeships You will work towards work based learning qualifications equivalent to an NVQ Level 2. Apprenticeships You will work towards work based learning qualifications equivalent to an NVQ Level 3 Higher Apprenticeships You will work towards work based learning qualifications equivalent to an NVQ Level 4, Foundation Degree or Honours Degree

I have entered into a number of competitions and been very successful which has resulted in me gaining full time employment in a salon that is highly recommended in the local area. I would recommend this path of learning to anyone seeking to succeed in the world of work.

Employers who take on an apprentice only pay their salary. The Welsh Government will fund their training

8 What support will I get? You will be assigned a Training Adviser/Assessor who will provide you with high levels of support throughout your Apprenticeship. Your Training Adviser will maintain close links with the College tutors and the employer to ensure that you stay on track to complete your framework of qualifications within timescale. Your Apprenticeship framework will include a Work Based Qualification, Essential Skills Wales and Employee Rights and Responsibilities. Apprentices usually attend College on a day release basis. Your Training Adviser/Assessor will also assess you in the workplace as and when required. How to apply for an Apprenticeship? The Apprenticeship Matching Service is a free on line service which lists the apprenticeship opportunities being offered by employers around Wales and allows you to filter them by industry sector and location. That way you can match your skills, talents and career aspirations with the right vacancies. 9 Marisa Buckley-Robins Foundation Apprenticeship in Fashion and Textiles Employer: Anderson Apparel Ltd Marisa Marisa, a Coleg Sir Gâr apprentice has won an outstanding apprentice award. She was presented with the Outstanding Apprentice Award at the Powys Business Awards for her initiatives at the mid-wales company. It s a great honour to win this award which is a huge surprise. Beginning her fashion and textiles career at Laura Ashley s Texplan factory, Marisa was making curtains for two and a half years before embarking on an apprenticeship at Anderson Apparel Ltd. I wanted to get into manufacturing clothing and to learn new skills. It was exciting entering a new field of manufacturing.

10 Work your way up to an Apprenticeship If you re not quite ready for an apprenticeship, here are some options to help you reach the level you need to impress a potential employer. Traineeships Aged 16-18? Left School? Unemployed? Then a Traineeship could be perfect for you. You can improve your chances of an apprenticeship by showing potential bosses that you are ready for work. One way to do this is to complete a Traineeship. It s brilliant! You can try out different types of jobs, get some work experience and learn new skills too. It s fun and it gives you time to think about what kind of job you want to do. 11 Ashley Jones Automotive Engineering Family Business - Autoshop Ashley Ashley Jones, from Swiss Valley, scooped gold in an all Wales competition to find the country s best automobile technology student and is revving up to become the third generation of his family in the business. A level two automotive apprentice at Coleg Sir Gar s Pibwrlwyd campus, Ashley said he was determined to carry on the family tradition. The autoshop was opened by my grandfather, and my dad now runs it. The competitions are new to me and I was pleased to be asked to take part. Ashley battled it out against 11 other finalists to be named the Skills Competition Wales winner in the automobile technology competition.
