The Design Project Fall 2015 Close the Door!

Objective (based on a true story) I ride my bike to work most days and need to close the garage door behind me when I leave. I m tired of switching my one garage opener between bike and car (and too cheap to buy a second opener) Ideal situation: I press a button, exit the garage with my bike, and the door closes behind me Your task: Build a machine that will press the button on my wallmounted door control panel with a 30 second delay, giving me time to exit safely

Constraints The machine must be verified to be safe by your lab instructor BEFORE used by your team. No explosions may be used The maximum allowable voltage in your team s device is 25V. If your team uses batteries, the combined maximum mass of batteries allowed is 1kg. The device must fit within the 24 by 24 rectangular test zone and be less than 60 tall before being activated. Once ready to test, your team s device must be activated by the instructor, and the physical component (button, switch, lever) used to turn the machine on must be clearly labeled ON. External control and energy is NOT allowed, once activated your team s device must operate on its own.

Testing Your team s testing period is 3 minutes, multiple attempts are allowed in this period

Scoring Final Prototype (12/2/15 and 12/4/15) Performance 1: (30%) Button pressed within 3s of specified interval (30s): 10 points. Button pressed within 2s of specified interval (30s): 20 points. Button pressed within 1s of specified interval (30s): 30 points. Performance 2: (20%) The button is pressed with sufficient force to activate. The button has been wired to set off a doorbell chime when pressed.

Scoring (continued) Complexity (30%) will be assessed by counting energy transformations. The most complex machines will receive the highest scores for complexity. During alpha testing, a minimum number of transformations for receiving full points will determined. Acceptable forms of energy: Translational Mechanical (e.g. a button), Rotational Mechanical (e.g. a lever), Electrical (e.g. an electrical circuit), Hydraulic (e.g. falling water), Pneumatic (e.g. blowing air), Chemical (e.g. a component that is dissolved), Note: Nuclear energy is not allowed for safety reasons. Aesthetics/style points (20%): Team name on design Team logo on design Design is painted or decorated

Please Note: The device must be designed and built by your team. Components may be sourced from vendors but must be team assembled. What is and is not considered to be team-built is to be determined by your lab instructor and/or me. The instructors reserve the right to revise this project description at any point in the semester to address safety and/or project definition issues.

SAFETY Safety is the most critical aspect of engineering systems that interact with people Shop (IDE building, G3E) will open ~6 th week of class Use of the shop outside of posted hours is prohibited, even if the door is open (another shop is attached and used M,W,F) During posted hours, a shop supervisor will be present Safety glasses will be required while working on projects Unsafe behavior will result in a team being prohibited from using the shop or testing Unsafe devices will NOT be allowed to test When testing is occurring, all persons must be outside the testing area (will be marked)

Budget No budget constraint for this project Guideline: less than the cost of a textbook What might you need to budget for? Prototype materials Final materials Value of time

Conceptual Design Project Clarification Design Objectives

Clarification Customer Needs Requirements Product Functionality

How can we formalize this?

Objectives Objective Trees

Objectives definition: Expressions of desired attributes and behaviors customers want to see in the product.

Objectives = BE Objectives represent desired qualities Language of the customer

Objective Trees definition: A method to transform customer statements into specific design objectives

Three Step Procedure 1. Prepare a list of design objectives 2. Order list into sets of higherlevel and lower-level objectives 3. Draw a tree of objectives, showing hierarchical relationships and interconnections

Prepare a list Thoroughly read written design statements and requirements. Interview your customer. Clarify vague statements Brainstorm with your design team.

Designers ask questions: Who will be using the product? What will be done with the product? How should this be done? Why do you want it that way?

Double Check Your Initial List You may have listed items other than objectives such as: Constraints Restrictions on Design Functions Operations product will DO Implementation Ways to execute function

Remember objectives are BE statements. The product should BE.

Order the list Copy design objectives to Post-it notes Place on a wall Group statements into related topics Order from high-level to low-level within each group

Draw the Tree Cluster sets of objectives Hierarchy = general specific

Safe, accessible, and affordable public transportation system for Rolla Safe Accessible Affordable Equipped with state-of-the art safety features Low risk for injury ADA Accessible Connected with current transportation system Affordable to maintain Affordable to Install

Overall objective Safe, accessible, and affordable public transportation system for Rolla Safe Accessible Affordable Equipped with state-of-the art safety features Low risk for injury ADA Accessible Connected with current transportation system Affordable to maintain Affordable to Install

Overall objective Safe, accessible, and affordable public transportation system for Rolla Safe Accessible Affordable Equipped with state-of-the art safety features Low risk for injury ADA Accessible Connected with current transportation system Affordable to maintain Affordable to Install More detailed objectives

Objective Tree Summary Determining design objectives is part of clarifying the design problem Objectives are BE words Objectives express product attributes and expectations of the customer Objectives tree is a graphical way to show: Design objectives Hierarchy of objectives

The most important objective of this project is: A. Be safe 20% 20% 20% 20% 20% B. Be precise (timing) C. Be complex D. Be the best decorated E. Get an A Be safe Be precise (timing) Be complex Be the best decorated Get an A
