3 What is a Management System? EPA says An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency MassDEP says its an overall system of management processes and tools to help an organization address its environmental issues and goals

4 Not All EMSs Are ISO Certified TURA EMS (310 CMR 50.80) Allows a TURA facility an option to traditional TUR Planning 14 elements (modeled after ISO 14001:2004 elements)

5 What is ISO? International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Not a government agency Established in 1947 Promotes standardization to facilitate international commerce & cooperation Develops international agreements published as International Standards
