1 COMMERCIAL MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES 2013 QUANTITY SURVEYING SPECALIST COMPETENCIES 2013 The competencies introduced in 2013 are split into core and specialist competencies. For instance the quantity surveying specialism contains both commercial management core quantity surveying competencies and quantity surveying specialist competencies. The only difference between the two is that the commercial management core competencies have activity statements which are common to all other commercial management specialisms (although the optimum standard against each activity may differ) whereas the specialist competencies are unique to that particular specialism. Those specialisms yet to be revised in 2013 will not be split into core and specialist competencies, but will retain the previous, all embracing, specialist competencies only. OPTIMUM STANDARDS Each of the activities under the competencies must be signed-off to a specific standard, indicated by one of the letters A,, E or B. The definitions of these are given blow. A Appreciation A general awareness of the activity is required B nowledge This standard requires a more detailed level of understanding of the activity E Experience To reach this standard the activity must have been performed independently or under supervision. Experience of the relevant techniques and functions must be in addition to showing appreciation and knowledge B Ability To be able, without supervision, to perform relevant functions and be able to supervise other less experienced staff Technical Member level the applicant must achieve standard in all activities except that any 5 must be at E and any 5 may be at A amongst the core competencies and the same amongst the specialist competencies. There are no restrictions within this as to the particular choice of activities. Member level the optimum standard is given against each activity statement.
