1 Safety Notes July 2017 MEMBERSHIP MINUTE by Sadee Pistoia Membership Manager I m back! I m excited to be back with the Utah Safety Council and for the opportunity to continue with the Women in Safety group! Our June event, Active Shooter and Hands-On Self-Defense Training, was a big success. I want to thank everyone who made it out. This group has continued to grow, and it has been so wonderful to be a part of it. I would love any suggestions you might have to help this group to continue to grow and develop. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions, feedback, or topic ideas for Women in Safety. I can be reached by at spistoia@utahsafetycouncil.org or SAFE (7233). We Want to Recognize Your Company Safety success deserves to be recognized. Whether you re honoring marked improvement or consistent safety excellence, the Utah Safety Council would like to honor your achievements. Last year, we gave out more than 170 awards to our member companies! Safety Award recipients will be recognized at our Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon on August 18th at The Little America Hotel. Applications are due July 7th. Applications were mailed out to each member company. You may also download the applications on our website. And don t forget to R.S.V.P. for the Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon at UTAHSAFETYCOUNCIL.ORG. Members receive their first registration for free, and additional attendees are $30 each. If you have questions, feel free to give us a call at SAFE (7233). Member Spotlight: Tesoro Tesoro s Salt Lake City Refinery began operations in 1908 and is now the largest in Utah with a total crude-oil capacity of 63,000 barrels per day (bpd). Tesoro takes the safety of their employees and workplace very seriously. In 2016, they received the Award for Meritorious Safety Performance from American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM). Tesoro has been a Sustaining Member of the Utah Safety Council since When the Utah Safety Council launched a Women in Safety initiative in 2016, Tesoro became the official sponsor of the group and continues today with generous support. We appreciate their dedication to safety!
2 July 2017 The 100 Deadliest Days of Driving Memorial Day weekend kicked off the beginning of what is known as the 100 Deadliest Days of driving for teenagers. There is no better time to have a conversation about the five potentially deadly driving behaviors that many young drivers take part in every day. Drowsy Driving A recent survey found one-third of teens drive while they re drowsy, and nearly one in 10 have fallen asleep at the wheel while driving. Distracted Driving The National Safety Council s annual injury and fatality report found that the use of cellphones causes 26% of the nation s car crashes. Aggressive Driving According to AAA, at least 1,500 people are injured or killed every year in the U.S. on average as a result of aggressive driving. Impaired Driving Alcohol is involved in one-third of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. That s about 10,000 lives lost every year. Not Buckling Up In 2016, of the 280 traffic fatalities in Utah, 86 of those individuals were not buckled up. If you d like to do more than talk to your teenager about safe driving behavior, consider signing them up for a young driver defensive driving course. Alive at 25 is a program taught at the Utah Safety Council that focuses on teen drivers 15 to 24 years of age. The overall goal of the course is to assist young drivers in recognizing the risks they face and help focus on their own driving behaviors, so they can take responsibility and adopt safer driving practices. 3 July 2017 Crystalline Silica Standard Compliance Extension Last year, OSHA came out with a new standard for Crystalline Silica, a naturally-occurring mineral compound found in concrete. As a reminder, the standard: Established a lower PEL for crystalline silica Requires employers to use engineering controls or provide respirators if engineering controls aren t enough Requires employers to develop a written exposure control plan Offers medical exams and training to highly exposed workers (see OSHA.gov for full list of revisions and requirements) A few months ago, OSHA announced that the enforcement of the crystalline silica standard will now begin September 23, 2017 instead of June 23, It is still encouraged that employers continue taking the steps to come into compliance with this new standard, as September is coming quickly. Even with a few extra months to prepare, don t procrastinate until it s too late! Questions? Need help incorporating the new Silica Standards? We re here to help. Feel free to contact us by at safety@utahsafetycouncil.org or call SAFE (7233) to speak with our Occupational Safety Manager. Do you have Spanish-speaking employees?
