10 MUSTS FOR NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION 1. KNOW WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY: Make sure you cover fire and emergency evacuation procedures from day one. Tell workers whom to call and how to sound the alarm. Walk them through two different escape routes and show them where, outside, to meet you 2. FOLLOW ESTABLISHED RULES, PROCEDURES & SAFETY SIGNS: Make it clear that failure to do so is grounds for termination. Emphasize your commitment to safety and point out that, if necessary, rules will be enforced through progressive discipline. 3. WEAR REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Go over the PPE that is required, as well as the hazards this equipment will protect against. Then communicate that the employee is expected to: Wear it right. Wear it every time, without excuses. 4. HANDLE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS: Discuss specific substances workers are using and go over the labels and MSDS s. Cover the hazards, PPE, safe handling procedures, and emergency procedures in case of a spill. This training is vital for new workers and whenever new substances come into the workplace. Spot checks should be done periodically. 5. OPERATE EQUIPMENT CORRECTLY: Workers should only use equipment for which they have been trained and authorized. They should never take it upon themselves to maintain or repair equipment unless they have been expressly trained and authorized to do so. 6. AVOID TAKING SAFETY RISKS: Make it clear that it is never acceptable for employees to take shortcuts, ignore near misses, or engage in horseplay. The cost of these actions can put their own lives at risk. 7. REMOVE, REPAIR, OR REPORT SAFETY HAZARDS RIGHT AWAY: Emphasize that everyone has a personal responsibility to correct safety problems. Communicate that you expect workers to respond immediately to hazards. 8. REPORT ACCIDENTS PROMPTLY: Make sure workers know what steps to take to report accidents, including what emergency number to call. 9. CONTRIBUTE TO WORK ZONE SAFETY: Communicate your expectations that individual work areas be kept neat and clean, and that all employees help keep common areas free from clutter and other housekeeping hazards that could result in an accident or injury. 10. TAKE TRAINING SERIOUSLY: Inform workers that safety training will be an important and ongoing process. They can expect it whenever new processes or procedures are introduced, and whenever their safety performance needs refreshing. 10

Job Instruction Safety Training for New Hires Among the list of critical functions a restaurant manager is responsible for is the effective training of employees. McDonald s and its partners have provided the tools to assist you in your training efforts. Therefore, proper job instruction should not be complicated or difficult but demands your commitment to accurately evaluate employee potential and nurture its growth. The instruction must include all necessary steps to ensure safety, productivity, quality and timely delivery. A four step training method has proven effective for on-the-job instruction. This shoulder-to-shoulder training consists of the following four elements: Step 1 - Prepare Step 2 - Present Step 3 - Try out Step 4 - Follow up 11

Safety Training for New Hires Step 1: Prepare Prepare means that the restaurant must have a prepared training plan, training area, crew trainer, and crew person. Prepare a Training Plan.- The training manager uses the Crew Training Needs Analysis and Budget form and the Crew Training Tracking System (both explained in detail in the Crew Training System manual) to prepare the training plan. The plan identifies the training needs, budget, and schedule for crew training. This makes sure that the right people are in the right place at the right time for training to occur. Prepare the Trainer - The crew trainer should be a pro who always does the job right. Even then, the crew trainer must review and practice the station procedures as part of their preparation for training. Prepare the Training Area - The crew trainer makes sure the following is done: The training materials are available The training area is properly set up The video equipment is available and in good working condition Prepare the Crew Person - The crew trainer needs to understand that the crew trainee will often be tense or anxious. The crew trainer prepares the trainee for training by: Explaining the importance of the job Creating an interest in knowing about the job Providing a station orientation as a general overview of the procedures 12

Safety Training for New Hires (Continued) Step 2: Present This step involves explaining and demonstrating station procedures to the crew person. Use a systematic approach to explain the how and the whys of each procedure. Include both off-floor training (using videotape and the SOC) and on-floor demonstration of the station procedures. Step 3: Try out Now the crew person is ready to try each step. The crew person should explain the how and why to the crew trainer as they perform each step. This helps reinforce the learning. Any errors must be corrected immediately in a positive manner. Good performance should be recognized. Continued practice and repetition will build skills and confidence. Step 4: Follow up After the crew person has enough practice, the crew trainer uses an SOC to follow up. The trainer makes sure the crew person is following the proper procedures and can meet the station standards. 13

Safety Orientation Checklist It is required that the supervisor thoroughly instructs each new employee in the safety requirements of the job and this checklist is provided for the accomplishment of that purpose. Directions: Check each of the items on this form at the time instruction is given and when completed. Please sign it and return it to the Personnel Department for placement in the employee s file. Employee s Name: Occupation: Date Hired: 1. Viewed Safety Films 2. Safety Rules for specific jobs 3. Safety Devices 4. Reporting Unsafe Conditions 5. Job Conduct 6. Lifting Techniques 7.
