High-level Introduction to MTG Ground Segment Workshop on NWC Applications using MTG-IRS Fausto Roveda MTG Data Processing System Facility Manager 1
Summary of the Presentation Ground Segment Overview Payload Data Processing Systems Multi-Mission Elements Ground Segment Technical Challenges Availability and Timeliness; Data rates and Volumes; Estimated Computational Needs; Status of Facility Procurements
The MTG System Space Segment Launch and LEOP Service Ground Segment
MTG Ground Segment Context Ground Stations Dissemination MTG GS Major Components: Ground Stations Facilities (TTCF, MDAF) Mission Operation Facility (MOF) Data Processing Facilities (IDPF, L2PF) Multi-Mission Elements (MMEs) Note: Facility = hardware + software Mission Operation Data Processing Archive and Retrieval EUMETSAT Headquarter SAF Network
MTG Payload Data Processing Systems Off-line Environments (Analysis & Reporting, Developoment) Off-line Buffer Raw Data Instrument Data Processing Facility (Level-1) Level-2 Processing Facility Data Dissemination Data Centre Reprocessing (L1 and L2) On-Line Environments
On-Line Environments Raw Data Instrument Data Processing Facility (Level-1) Level-2 Processing Facility OPE OPE VAL VAL IV&V IV&V On-Line Environments
Instrument Data Processing Facility (IDPF) The IDPF receives raw instrument data and performs: Science data extraction and chunking (for parallel processing); Radiometric and spectral calibration; Geometric rectification to a reference grid (FCI only); Image Navigation and Registration; Aggregation of chunks and formatting into output file. It provides also capabilities for Algorithm Development, Fast Scientific Validation and Reprocessing (at least 5 times faster than near-real-time processing).
Level 2 Processing Facility (L2PF) The L2PF generates meteorological products from the Level-1 data produced by the IDPF. Flexibility and simplicity to include new products are key features of EUMETSAT level 2 processing Contract(s) will foresee the capability to add in additional products, potentially developed in house by EUMETSAT (including products developed by Satellite Application Facilities) Flexibility is also considered for the evolutions of existing products during the development of the L2 Facility It provides also capabilities for Algorithm Development, Fast Scientific Validation and Reprocessing.
Multi Mission Elements (MMEs) What are the Multi-Mission Elements? Elements currently used in several Operational Programmes or evolution of them, and can be re-used for future programmes, in particular for the MTG Ground Segment. These are identified as Multi-Mission Elements (MME) The main reasons for considering re-use are: Reduced development risks and costs Reduce long-term maintenance costs Consistency towards end users Easier, homogeneous operations
The MMEs provide the following functions for MTG Data Archive (MME DAC) long term archival and retrieval of MTG mission data user support and helpdesk services, including service registration Dissemination (MME DIS) dissemination of data to end users via EUMETCast, RMDCN/GTS and Internet presentation of data via Internet (rolling archive, image generation) ingestion of data from external parties into the GS master and session keys for TC authentication and payload data encryption Monitoring (MME MON) analysis and reporting (including science and long term trend analysis) centralised monitoring capabilities for the whole MTG ground segment end-to-end production, service status, hardware, remote spacecraft telemetry Infrastructure (MME INF) network connectivity to/from the MMEs and inter-building internet, RMDCN/GTS lines and network security time reference, voice loop and data protection services 10
Ground Segment Technical Challenges
MTG Operational Availability datasets received and that meet the quality thresholds datasets scheduled to have been sent or made *For a given period and removing the part corresponding to the scheduled outages and the available external outages Major contributing components of the Ground Segment Operational Availability are: Completeness; Accuracy; Timeliness Note: As opposed to Space Segment, any Ground Segment outage, planned or unplanned, contributes negatively to the operational availability; Any systematic loss of quality introduced due to data formatting or compression in order to comply with the agreed format specifications does not contribute to operational availability of the ground segment.
MTG Timeliness Time difference The end of reception of the corresponding data by the users The foreseen end of acquisition of the last contributing data *before decryption and decompression *from a sample, a dwell, a swath, a granule It excludes: delay introduced by transmission lines and networks outside EUMETSAT control (e.g. Internet, GTS). the processing time outside EUMETSAT control (e.g. SAF processing time).

Status of Facility Procurements
Status of Ground Segment Facility Procurements Instrument Data Processing Facility (IDPF) support for MTG-I (FCI + LI) + framework Final stage of direct negotiation with Space Segment Prime Contractor. Kick-off foreseen in October 2013 Instrument Data Processing Facility (IDPF) support for MTG-S (IRS + UVN) Specifications are being prepared. Procurement will be initiated in later stage. Level-2 Processing Facility (L2PF) Likely to be split between Imager (FCI+LI) and Sounder (IRS). Procurement will be initiated in later stage. Mission Operation Facility (MOF) Contractor has been selected. Kick-off foreseen in the coming months after contract signature. Ground Stations Facilities (MDAF & TTCF) Offers from Industry are currently under evaluations. Multi-Mission Elements (MMEs) Specifications are ready. Preliminary Design Review is planned for September This is likely to be a EUMETSAT internal activity
