1 s Good Housekeeping Are all areas kept clean and neat, with everything in its proper place? Is lighting in all parts of the warehouse adequate, and are bulbs replaced on a schedule before they burn out? Are floors and aisles kept clear at all times? Is any loose flooring or other tripping hazard reported immediately and repaired or removed promptly? Are any spills cleaned up immediately? Are materials stored so that they don t block sprinklers, fire exits, or fire extinguishers? Are employees careful not to leave sharp objects lying out or protruding into aisles? Is all trash disposed of immediately in proper containers? Safe Work Habits Do all warehouse workers follow safety rules and make safety a constant priority? Do all employees who enter the warehouse obey danger, warning, and caution signs and signals? Do workers pay attention to where they re going and what they re doing? Do employees walk rather than run in the warehouse? 255-3

2 s Do employees hand rather than throw materials and tools to others? Do warehouse employees refrain from engaging in horseplay on the job? PPE Do warehouse employees always wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including: Hard hats? Heavy gloves? Protective shoes with nonskid soles? Protective glasses and clothing? Is required PPE always readily available to employees as well as visitors to the warehouse? Is it maintained in good condition and replaced when worn out or damaged? Do you post signs at key spots around the warehouse and at all entrances reminding employees to wear required PPE? Materials Handling Do workers always take the time to plan the best means to move a load before they begin? Do they check the route and remove any obstacles or choose a clearer path? Do they check to make sure that the destination has enough space for the load and any materials handling equipment? Do employees use safe lifting and carrying techniques at all times? 255-4

3 s Dollies and Hand Trucks Do employees minimize manual lifting and carrying by using appropriate equipment to bear the load? Do employees place heavy objects on the bottom and secure bulky or awkward items? Do they make sure they can see over the load before they begin to move it? Do they always push (rather than pull) a load and lean in the direction in which they re going? Do they keep a load ahead of them when going downhill? Powered Vehicles Do employees operate powered vehicles only if they have been trained and authorized to do so? Do they carefully inspect and maintain powered vehicles? Do they obey speed limits at all times? Do they refrain from carrying passengers? Do they practice safe driving and obey all traffic rules? Do they always avoid standing or walking under raised forks? Do they drive with forks and loads low and tilted back? Do they park forklifts with forks low and flat, brake set, and key removed? 255-5

4 s Cranes and Hoists Do employees operate this equipment only if they have been trained and authorized to do so? Do they make sure that loads are balanced and within the equipment s rated capacity? Do they keep hands and feet inside during operation? Do they inspect and maintain equipment carefully? Are they careful never to swing a load over people? Do they remove items that could be hit or knocked over during operation? Do all employees stay away from operating equipment unless directly involved with the job? Materials Storage Do warehouse employees match storage conditions to materials requirements (dry, ventilated, etc.)? Do they make sure shelves and racks are in good condition and able to take the load? Do they stack all materials on a flat surface? Do they always place heaver objects close to the floor and lighter/smaller ones higher? 255-6

5 s Do they make sure not to block sprinklers or store items where they could contact overhead lights or pipes? Do they always stand on ladders, not boxes, shelves, or chairs, to reach high places? Do they read labels and safety data sheets before storing chemicals or flammable and combustible materials? Loading Dock Safety Are employees careful not to exceed dock plate load capacity? Do employees make sure that dock plates are secure before loading or unloading? Are they alert to overhead door movements? Do they refrain from jumping from the loading dock? Do they keep the dock dry and free of ice? Are truck/trailer wheels always chocked or blocked before loading or unloading? Skids and Pallets Are empties carefully stacked out of the way of pedestrian and vehicle traffic? Are they stacked flat, not on end, and no more than four feet high? 255-7

6 s Do employees refrain from dropping or walking on empty skids? When stacking empty skids, do employees work with a helper or use appropriate equipment? Do they wear gloves and watch out for splinters and nails? Conveyor Belts Do employees always keep conveyor belt guards in place? Do they refrain from riding on or crawling across or under a conveyor? Are they careful not to wear loose clothes or jewelry around a conveyor? Do they watch out for materials flying off a conveyor belt? Packing and Unpacking Do employees wear heavy gloves and safety glasses to handle plastic or metal strapping? Do workers use straps to lift a package only if they are designed for that purpose? Do they use cutting tools with care so that they do not injure themselves or co-workers, or damage materials? Do they remove straps with one hand holding down the strapping and the other cutting away from their bodies? 255-8

7 s Are they careful to store blades properly after use? Do they immediately place used straps in the trash? Working on Heights Do employees choose the right ladder for the job? Do they inspect ladders before use and set them up properly on a firm, level surface? Do they use ladders safely, taking no risks? Do they use barricades and signs to warn workers below? Are they careful not to leave materials or tools on the edge of a platform, ladder, railing, etc.? Do they refrain from keeping tools in their pockets while above ground? Do they stand no higher than four rungs from the top (two for a stepladder)? 255-9
