Cosmetic Packaging checking ECOCERT/COSMOS Guidelines Contents : Reminder of the validation rules Which documents should be sent to pretend to this checking? How to fill-in the Application Form? How to fill-in the questionnaire? Page 1 Page 2 Page 2 Page 2 Changes to this document are identified by a vertical line in the margin. 1
Reminder of the validation rules The purpose of this checking is to attest of the conformity of the packagings to the Ecocert Standard for Natural and Organic Cosmetics and/or the COSMOS standard. In consequence, the validation rules are the same as the validation rule of the Ecocert Standard (please refer to paragraph 4.4) and/or of the COSMOS standard (please refer to paragraph 8 and to the COSMOS technical guide). ECOCERT Standard : The Ecocert Standard aims at minimising the environemnent impact of the packaging by promoting the use of material from natural origin or recyclable materials. Accepted and non accepted materials : Accepted Materials (*) Non accepted materials (*) Paperboard/Paper Wood Glass Aluminium Steal (or stainless steal) PP PE PET PLA Material leading to the death of animals Material issued from dead animals PS and derivatives PVC and derivatives PMMA and derivatives Materials derived from or manufactured with GMOs Thermosetting polymers (*) Non exhaustive lists COSMOS Standard : The COSMOS standard is available at "To minimise the direct and indirect environmental impact of the packaging during its life cycle, it is required to : minimise the amount of material used maximise the amount of material that can be reused or recycled, and use materials with recycled content where possible" 2
Accepted and non accepted material : Accepted Materials Wood Glass Aluminium PE, PET, PP, PETG Paperboard PLA (non GMO) Non accepted materials Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other chlorinated plastic Polystyrene Materials or substances that contain, have been derived from, or manufcatured using, genetically modified organisms Any other 100% natural origin materials Which documents should be sent to pretend to this Checking? Once the General Conditions of Sales are signed, you should send: 1. The Application form (F390) filled-in and signed. 2. One questionnnaire filled-in and signed per commercial reference 3. A technical drawing per commercial reference 3
How to fill-in the Application Form? The application form is the file where you indicate the product you want to be checked by Ecocert as well as your calculated quotation. As it is also worth for the acceptation of the generale conditions of sales, it should always be signed (by the company asking for the checking). You can register several products at the same time, and if you want to add new products to your attestation during the year, you will have to send a new application form. You can register your products for Ecocert checking only or for Ecocert and COSMOS checking. At the end of each year, the application form should be re-sent with the products you want to renew for the next year, and the new products to be checked. Company information Fees must be calculated using the fee table for the year Information that will appear on your attestation Indicate if it is the first year of the verification or a renewal In order to calculate the fees, use the fee table of the current year. To be valid, the application form must always contain the information asked in red, the calculated fees and the signature. How to fill-in the questionnaire? The questionnaire is divided in 4 parts: the company presentation (Part I), the information regarding the raw materials (Part II), the information regarding the finished 4
product (Part III) and the information regarding the ecological commitment of the company (Part IV). Part I: Company Presentation In this part you should indicate in the grey case the information regarding your company (name, adress, etc...) and regarding the manufacturer of the product (if different). General information regarding the product are asked such as: Its commercial name or commercial reference Its capacity (relevant for a tube or a jar for example); you can decide to fill-in one questionnaire for several capacities Remark: for one tube and one cap you will have to fill-in two different questionnaires Part II: information regarding the raw materials In this part, questions are asked only regarding the raw materials and mainly regarding their origin (from natural sources, from recycled plastic, etc...). For example for a pump : insert, stem, ball, etc... Precise the origin of the natural or animal sourced materials used (wood, corn, etc...) Additional questions These are the information you should list in the chart: You must list all the small part of your packaging (such as insert, ball, stem, actuator for a pump), the material of the different parts and the % of the total product it represents. 5
If your material is from (or partly from) recycled plastic, please indicate Y or N under PCR for Post Consumer Recycled or PIR for Post Industrial Recycled (or indicate the % of PCR and PIR material) If your material is from natural sources or animal sources, indicate the origin in the corresponding column Do not forget to answer all the additional question below the chart. Part III: General information concerning the finished product Part III of the questionnaire is mainly about the manufacturing process of the packaging (the quantity of energy and water necessary) and its end of life. Information regarding the manufacturing process are not compulsory, however you can indicate them in the part "other comments" of the questionnaire If during the manufacturing process, you need to use additives, such as glue, please indicate the kind and the nature of the additives. If possible, explain its use. Information regarding the end of life of the products are compulsory. Your product can be either; recyclable : in that case indicate the valorization channel (in term of material valorization) biodegradable compostable re-usable none of the above Remark: if you have a "favorable conclusion" from the COTREP, please join it to the questionnaire. Finally, you can use the part other to indicate comments (for example details regarding the manufacturing process of your product). The attestation delivered after the checking is valid untill the end of the year. It will be automatically renewed the following year according to table fees. 6
