1 Syllabus Introduction to Social Media Course Overview This one-semester elective course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand the world of social media and how individuals, social groups, and businesses are using different types of social media. This course is structured into lessons and Course Activities as follows: The first two lessons discuss various types of social media and the technologies that spawned them. The next eleven lessons take a closer look at different types of social media from social and professional networks to geolocation and photo-sharing services. The last three lessons discuss how technological advances (specifically in mobile devices) and the legal environment impact social media, and how businesses and use social media in their marketing activities. You will submit the Course documents to your teacher and will check your own answers in the Activities that accompany each lesson. Each lesson also has a multiple-choice mastery test. A multiple-choice end-of-semester test completes the course. The Course Activities (submitted to the teacher) and the Activities (self-checked) are major components of this course. Course Goals By the end of this course, you will have done the following: explored the technological and sociological drivers of social media explored various types of social media, their features, and their utility analyzed how technology and privacy laws impact social media analyzed the impact of social media on business marketing Prerequisite Skills Introduction to Social Media is a beginning class that does not have specific prerequisites. Nevertheless, these fundamental skills will be helpful: ability to understand how social forces shape our world an interest in technology EDMENTUM, INC.
2 familiarity with the writing process General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following: Complete basic operations with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Perform online research using various search engines and library databases. Communicate through and participate in discussion boards. For a complete list of general skills that are required for participation in online courses, refer to the Prerequisites section of the Plato Student Orientation document, found at the beginning of this course. Credit Value Introduction to Social Media is a 0.5-credit course. Social Media and Communities Influences of Social Media Social Networking Explore the rise and utility of social networks Professional Networking Explore the use of professional networking for career growth. How Consumers Use Social Media Impact of Social Media on Society Photo-Sharing Explore photo sharing and organize an individual site based on an existing photo-sharing service. 3 Course Course

Trends in Social Media Rich Media Versus Traditional Media Social Bookmarking and Social News Analyze the impact of social media on news generating and sharing. Social Opinion Analyze the impact of social opinion on the consumption of product and services. Wikis Determine the utility of wiki-based services to build and share a knowledge repository. Crowdsourcing Explore crowdsourcing and its impact on industry. The Power of Crowds The Credibility of Crowds Marketing Through Social Media Analyze the impact of social media on classical marketing. Social Mobility Explore the utility of social media through mobile devices. Privacy and Data Security Explain privacy and legality in the context of social media.
