Swabbing animal carcasses is another application. They consist of a Whirl-Pak bag containing a sponge, which is free from bactericides and is non-inhibitory. The sponge measures 38x76mm and is approximately 15mm thick when wet. After the sample has been collected the sponge is returned to the bag, ready for testing. Media may be added and the sample incubated in the bag for a +/- test or directly pipetted and plated out. Speci-Sponge bags are also available with gloves and a 10ml vial of general purpose buffer (ph6.8), which will optimise the growth stability of most organisms. This vial has a push release cap and can be opened within the bag. DE neutralising broth is available separately. This general purpose dilutant is used to moisten the sponge and will neutralise various sanitisers that may be present. 7 Whirl-Pak Whirl-Pak Thio-Bag for Potable Water Collection Whirl-Pak Thio-Bags provide an economical and convenient method of sampling potable water. They are EPA approved, robust, transparent polyethylene bags that have been sterilised with ethylene oxide gas. They contain a non-toxic, non-nutritive, 10mg active ingredient tablet of sodium thiosulphate to neutralise the chlorine at the point of collection. The bags have a white, write-on strip, which can be marked using pen, pencil or marker. The fill line assists in collecting the correct quantity for standard test procedures. Thio-Bags are also approved for the collection of microbiological samples for the US National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance monitoring to Thio-Bags are available in 100ml and 300ml sizes.
