1 Dyneon TM Polytetrafluoroethylene Product Comparison Guide a 3M company
2 Dyneon PTFE and Dyneon TFM PTFE PTFE meets tough demands for new applications and maintains proven success and high reliability in the following industries: PTFE is the acronym for polytetrafluoroethylene and is sold by Dyneon under the Dyneon brand name. Dyneon entered the market as a worldwide leader in advanced fluoropolymer technology. In addition, Dyneon has earned a reputa tion as an industry leader in providing PTFE-based compounds that feature exceptional physical properties providing thousands of solutions for some of the most difficult applications. The unique properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) have made it an indispensable material for modern industry. PTFE offers the following exceptional characteristics: Automotive Its outstanding properties make it ideally suitable for self-lubricating bearings, sliding elements and seals, especially when reinforced with special fillers. Electrical/Electronic Engineering Excellent electrical insulation properties, very low dielectric constant, high thermal stability and flame resistant properties. Consumer Markets For coating household utensils and engineering parts, the non-stick/slip properties and heat resistance are essential. Construction Offers weathering resistance, non-stick properties and does not support combustion; used to advantage in modern types of roof membrane. Sliding bearings have proved themselves over the years in the building construction and civil engineering, for example as bridge pads. Semiconductor Well suited for use in manufacturing equipment due to the ultra-smooth surfaces of machined components enabling reduced wash, rinse and dry cycles, exceptionally low ion extractables and fusibility. Chemical Processing/Plant Construction Recognized for its corrosion protection and as a sealing material because of its broad and excellent chemical resistance and continuous service temperature ranging from -200 C to +260 C. very high thermal stability broad and excellent chemical resistance wide service temperature range excellent dielectric properties no embrittlement or aging TFM PTFE, a second-generation PTFE with improved properties, allows new designs and processing methods to be used, especially in appli - cations where high safety and reliability standards are specified. In comparison with classic PTFE products TFM PTFE grades are distinguished by: substantially lower deformation under load denser polymer structure lower permeability excellent weldability with special methods higher economic value PTFE is rapidly becoming the material of choice where low friction, high durability, excellent thermal properties and chemical inertness characteristics are required. 2 The linear molecular structure of classic PTFE is arranged in a helical configuration. The fluorine atoms sterically shield the carbon atoms. This structure, in conjunction with the high carbonfluorine bond energy, explains the exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance of the material. The exceptional property profile of Dyneon TM TFM TM PTFE is achieved by chemical modification and a specially tailored molecular structure. Dyneon TM TFM TM PTFE bridges the gap between classic PTFE and Dyneon TM PFA fluorothermoplastics. The Dyneon TM TFM TM PTFE range of specially tailored suspension and emulsion polymers is continually being extended. Polytetrafluoroethylene Suspension polymers Non-free-flowing grades unfilled and filled (compounds) Free-flowing grades unfilled and filled (compounds) Semi-finished and finished products Billets Skived films Rods Sheets Tubes PTFE is supplied in the form of: Free-flowing and non-free-flowing compression moulding powders (suspension polymers) unfilled and filled (compounds) with carbon, glass, bronze etc. For the manufacture of semi-finished and finished products, such as pipes, rods, sheets, skived films, linings and billets. Emulsion polymer powders (paste extrusion grades) unfilled and filled (compounds) with glass, carbon etc. for processing on paste extruders. For the manufacture of wire and cable insulations, unsintered Micropowders Additives for plastics, lubricants and printing inks Non-stick and antifriction coatings Dispersions Formulation of metal coating systems Impregnation Coating of glass fibre fabrics Emulsion polymers Fine Powder extrusion grades unfilled and filled (compounds) Tubing Unsintered sealing tapes Electrical insulating tapes Wire and cable insulation Lining Yarns and sintered tapes, thin-walled tubings, pipe linings, sintered and unsintered cords and profiles. Dispersions: For impregnating yarns and woven fabrics and coating metal surfaces, an extensive range of different dispersions is available. Micropowders: Very fine-particle, low-molecularweight PTFE powders used as additives for thermoplastics, lubricants, printing inks, paint and coating systems to improve slip and non-stick characteristics. 3
3 Dyneon PTFE Dispersions with bimodal particle-size distribution Significantly improved coating performance obtained by using Dyneon TM PTFE Dispersions with bimodal particle-size distribution: improved film formation better adhesion far fewer pores better gloss higher hardness This principle is already being successfully applied in various Dyneon TM PTFE Dispersions, e.g. Dyneon TM TF 5050 Z PTFE, our best product for formulation systems and impregnation. Dyneon TFM PTFE a second-generation PTFE with improved properties An important further development on classic polytetra fluoroethylene is TFM PTFE, a second-generation PTFE, which represents a unique extension to the Fluoroplastics product portfolio. TFM PTFE offers a significantly improved property profile: substantially lower deformation under load denser polymer structure with fewer voids lower permeability smoother surfaces of machined parts higher transparency excellent weldability with special methods meets many specifications (e.g. FDA compliance; UL94 listing) Skived films under a optical microscope at 25x magnification The denser polymer structure of Dyneon TM TFM TM PTFE is apparent under the microscope. Monomodal particle-size distribution Higher packing density with bimodal particle-size distribution. The variable sized particles form a more tightly packed particle arrangement and thus produce a denser coating film. 4 5

Dyneon researchers have developed a new emulsifier that exhibits a significantly improved Environmental, Health and Safety profile. In addition, the performance properties of Dyneon fluoropolymer products are unchanged because the new emulsifier retains the technical performance of the emulsifier it replaced. This achievement allowed Dyneon to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s Voluntary PFOA Stewardship Program goals seven years ahead of time. Building Blocks (Monomers) Our Product Stewardship Strategy Dyneon has successfully completed the replacement of PFOA with its new emulsifier technology Dyneon has a state-of-the-art system in place to minimize the release of the new emulsifier into the environment Dyneon has made its containment technology available to others 1) The measurements are carried out at 372 C with different test weights and nozzle diameters. The melt viscosity of micropowders can be calculated from the melt flow rate (MFR) by Hagen Poiseuille s law to obtain an indication of molecular weight.
