6 Technology : metallization by spraying (1) 1. Spraying of 2 water based solutions (oxidant = metal salt & reducer) with standard painting equipment at ambient pressure and temperature 2. Redox reaction resulting in immediate growth of metallic layer on the substrate 6

10 Jet Metal process: layer characteristics Ag, Ni, Au, Fe, Co, can be deposited but Ag based layers are mostly used in the actual applications Characteristics of Ag layers Layer thickness Typically 20 nm 2 µm Layers up to ~ 10 µm are technically feasible but cost effectiveness must be checked case per case Reflectivity UV: absorption Visible light: average 95% IR: > 97% reflected Electrical conductivity 2, S.m -1 (theoretical conductivity Ag: 6, S.m -1 ) 150 nm thick Ag metal layer give enough conductivity to allow electrolytic layer growth EMI shielding properties Average attenuation of db between 10 MHz & 10 GHz with a 500 nm thick Ag layer! 10

14 Jet Selective technology: principle (1) Deposition of a pattern (which will not be metallized) by printing (eg inkjet, ) with an organic protective layer on the surface of the substrate Later in the JMT process this organic protective layer is dissolved leaving no metal depositions where the pattern was Substrate Preparation of substrate (flaming, plasma, ) Organic protective layer via printing Activation of surface Dissolution of organic protective layer Metallizat ion 1 extra step compared to JMT process These two steps are realized simultaneously during the Jet Metal process 14
