2 S E N S O R T E C H N O L O G I E S About AccuTru ExL High Temperature Thermocouples TYPES Once your application requires measuring temperatures above 1230ºC (2246ºF), you will need to move from metal sheathed thermocouples to ceramic sheathed thermocouples. This also requires abandoning the conventional thermocouple types, N,K,E,T, and J for platinum thermocouples. For extreme applications, above the range for platinum thermocouples, a series of tungsten-rhenium thermocouples are available, although they are restricted to use in vacuum or reducing environments. The three types of platinum based thermocouples are S, R, and B. Both the S and R consist of a pure platinum leg and a second leg using various percentages of platinum and rhodium. The type S is considered the standard and the Type R is considered to be slightly more robust than the Type S. The B type consists of two legs with alloys of platinum and rhodium. A type B thermocouple will allow the measurement of higher temperatures than the R or S (1820ºC 3308ºF). However, the B type will not provide accurate measurements for temperatures under 425ºC degrees ). If you have an application where you need the performance of a B type thermocouple but also need accurate readings under 425ºC, please refer to the AccuTru SVS Sensor section. At high temperatures contaminants become much more active and will attack the platinum if it is not properly protected. The standard protection tube material is alumina. As with other components, there are a variety of alumina tubes available. AccuTru uses a very high density alumina tube that we treat using a proprietary process to improve the life of the tube and reduce the risk of thermoelement contamination. Platinum thermocouples require special care. Platinum likes oxygen so in oxidizing environments, a platinum thermocouple is happy, Conversely, a platinum thermocouple will have a very short life if exposed to a reducing atmosphere. In those cases, it is important to try and provide access to oxygen in the sheath to prevent early thermocouple failure. Contrary to platinum based thermocouples, tungsten-rhenium thermocouples will fail in a matter of hours if exposed to oxygen at operating temperatures so they can only be used in reducing or inert environments unless contained in a sheath that allows no oxygen penetration at operating temperatures. Various acidic gases, sulfur, and many other processes are known to attack the platinum wires if they are able to penetrate the protection tube. This causes drift or premature failure due to embrittlement. AccuTru has developed methods from simple purging of the element to new technologies that greatly improve the life and stability of the platinum elements.
