Page 1 of 5 Title Conduct a sample analysis in a petrochemical laboratory Level 4 Credits 6 Purpose This unit standard is for people employed in the petrochemical industry. People credited with this unit standard are, in a petrochemical laboratory, able to: identify documentation and explain the functions and use of equipment; prepare for sample analysis; analyse a sample; reinstate work area after analysing sample; and calculate and report test results. Classification Petrochemical Industry > Petrochemical Process and Product Management Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Performance of the outcomes of this unit standard must comply with relevant site requirements, International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) accreditation, and the following legislation and documentation: Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; Resource Management Act 1991; ISO/IEC 17025:2005 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories; AS LAB C2 Specific Criteria for Accreditation Chemical Testing (IANZ, 2008) available at http://www.ianz.govt.nz; UOP Laboratory Test Methods (American Society of Test Methods, 2004), available at http://www.astm.org. 2 This unit standard is intended for, but is not limited to, workplace assessment. While all evidence requirements must be met, it is noted that all range statements within this unit standard are indicative and dependent on enterprise and site specific equipment, procedures, and practices. 3 Definitions Primary data refers to first analysis results. Site requirements mean the site specific documented methods for performing work activities and include health, safety, environmental, and quality management They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Page 2 of 5 Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify documentation and explain the functions and use of equipment in a petrochemical laboratory. 1.1 Workplace laboratory equipment is located and its use explained. preparation, filtration, crystallisation, precipitation. 1.2 Functions of workplace laboratory equipment are explained in accordance with site 1.3 Documentation and certification for laboratory processing equipment are identified. test certificates, certification, standards for safety, standards for inservice safety inspection and testing of equipment, identification tags, labels, IANZ accreditation. 1.4 Equipment status and general documentation are identified. manufacturer's information, equipment operating manuals, safety procedures, operating procedures, maintenance procedures, calibration. Outcome 2 Prepare for sample analysis in a petrochemical laboratory. 2.1 Documentation for the guidance and recording of the analysis is assembled in the work area before the procedure commences. 2.2 The area to be used for the analysis is selected to take account of factors which could affect the material to be analysed, the process of analysis, and any risks or hazards associated with the procedure. 2.3 The area is cleaned in accordance with site 2.4 Equipment is set up, having been cleaned, calibrated, and its status confirmed. 2.5 Materials and reagents to be used in the analysis are identified and obtained. 2.6 Any related services are identified as being available and ready for use prior to starting the analysis.

Page 3 of 5 2.7 The sample is confirmed as being representative of the material being analysed. 2.8 Actions and responses to minimise hazards and loss of material, in the event of abnormal occurrences, are identified. safety data sheets, personal protective equipment, spill containment. Outcome 3 Analyse a sample in a petrochemical laboratory. 3.1 Materials are prepared and handled safely in accordance with site 3.2 The process of analysis is carried out using techniques that minimise risks, hazards, and contamination. Specific Criteria for Chemical Testing, General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories, UOP Laboratory Test Methods. 3.3 Data relevant to the analysis are recorded in accordance with site 3.4 Data from the analysis meet site requirements for accuracy and precision. Outcome 4 Reinstate the work area after analysing sample in a petrochemical laboratory. 4.1 Following cleaning that completely removes all residues, equipment is left in a ready to use state and condition. 4.2 Equipment which is worn or damaged is identified, and replaced, repaired, or disposed of. 4.3 Materials used are clearly labelled and stored. 4.4 Waste materials are labelled and disposed of in accordance with site Outcome 5 Calculate and report test results in a petrochemical laboratory.

Page 4 of 5 5.1 Corrections are made to primary data, where required. 5.2 Results are calculated from primary data to the required number of significant figures and decimal places. 5.3 Any deviations from the expected range of results are investigated and actions are taken to resolve them. 5.4 The report includes all relevant information in accordance with site 5.5 Outcomes of the analysis are reported in accordance with site Planned review date 31 December 2018 Status information and last date for assessment for superseded versions Process Version Date Last Date for Assessment Registration 1 6 February 1997 31 December 2018 Revision 2 3 August 2000 31 December 2018 Review 3 20 September 2002 31 December 2018 Review 4 20 February 2009 31 December 2018 Rollover and Revision 5 20 April 2017 N/A Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR) reference 0079 This CMR can be accessed at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/search/index.do. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource
