Job Summary To lead, develop and deliver a comprehensive communications and engagement strategy for the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance. This will include stakeholder engagement; managing internal and external communications channels; developing media relations, campaign and event planning and promoting the work of the alliance through brand development and reputation management A key part of the role will include working closely with Macmillan Cancer Support to ensure appropriate recognition of Macmillan s investment and interests. The post holder will work closely with the West Yorkshire and Harrogate STP
Communications and Engagement Lead and liaise/co-ordinate with NHS England communications leads for cancer alliances and other health and social care communication professionals, including the voluntary and community sector. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. To create and deliver a communications and stakeholder engagement strategy that supports and promotes the West Yorkshire Cancer Alliance and it s work and objectives, ensuring it is aligned and in collaboration with local and national cancer strategy delivery plans, and the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP). 2. To create and manage a communications alliance sub group including Macmillan Cancer Support, all statutory organization stakeholders in the West Yorkshire and Harrogate STP footprint (NHS and local authority providers and commissioners, including NHS England), voluntary and community organisations and other partners. 3. To identify the stakeholders and their information requirements for the cancer alliance, making sure there is a continuous process of engagement and communication. This will include communicating with key stakeholders such as MPs and councilors and leading on work to engage leaders, local influencers and hard to reach communities. 4. To work honestly and openly whilst ensuring partners reputation are maintained and enhanced. This will involve identifying potential risk and PR opportunities. 5. To represent communications and engagement at project and/or Board meetings, advising and supporting as appropriate. 6. To set up and manage dedicated West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance communication channels whilst making the most of existing stakeholder and partner channels. These channels will include social media, workshops, videos, e-mails, newsletters, presentations and marketing collateral etc, as required. 7. To support the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance Programme Team by producing communications and materials needed for statutory communications (including formal consultation), as required. 8. To assess and respond effectively to requests for information from members of the public, patients and carers, ensuring they are dealt with effectively and in an empathetic manner with information products that best suit their needs.
9. To manage PR and media relations activity, drafting and pitching press releases, features, briefings and letters for publication; organizing photo opportunities, events and campaigns. 10. To research and respond to enquiries from journalists, local politicians and the public, preparing written statements and developing relationships with key people and ensuring appropriate sign off at the right level. 11. To set up and manage evaluation methods for ensuring the impact, effectiveness and reach of the communications action plan, adjusting the plan based on the outcomes, as required, whilst offering value for money at all time and within agreed budgets. 12. To work with the Macmillan Communications Manager and team to develop a bank of resources that will support the engagement, marketing, PR and campaigning activity of the redesign programmes, including working with people affected by cancer, local spokespeople and case studies, management of social media accounts and the production of a range of multimedia marketing materials. Area of Work The post holder may be required to travel to locations within the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance footprint and occasionally beyond for regional and national meetings to meet the needs of the Alliance work programme.
PERSON SPECIFICATION POST TITLE: Communications and Engagement Lead, WY&H Cancer Alliance Attributes Essential Desirable How identified Qualifications Educated to degree level or demonstrable equivalent experience Professional or postgraduate qualification in public relations, Evidence of continuous professional development marketing communications or journalism Experience Significant previous experience working in a communications, public relations or marketing role. Experience in making the best use of technologies that support communications. Experience of working with the news media Experience of building effective networks including across organizational boundaries. Ability to manage competing priorities and pressures for self and others in a challenging environment. Experience of developing and delivering comprehensive approaches to staff communication across a complex organization. Previous experience of working in a busy marketing communication office environment, that has competing demands on time. Experience of working for a large complex public sector organization (either in house or as contracted support). Experience in health or local authority related public/patient engagement. References
