THE BIOCHEMICAL SOCIETY JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Marketing Manager JOB HOLDER: RESPONSIBLE TO: Group Head of Marketing and Customer Service Purpose of post: (overall objectives and scope) To develop and implement the marketing strategy and to promote the products and services of Portland Press and the Biochemical Society. 1. Key result areas, including tasks within each key result area 1.1 Devise and implement effective marketing plans to achieve the objectives set out in the Portland Press Business Plan in liaison with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services (a) Set and manage the annual budget for the marketing department. (b) Devise and implement, in a cost-effective and efficient manner, the marketing and promotional plan for the products and services of Portland Press Limited (c) In liaison with Sales and Licensing Manager, contribute to the implementation, in a cost-effective and efficient manner, of the journal subscription renewal process with a view to maintaining and increasing subscriptions. (d) Ensure the following are implemented in a cost-effective and efficient manner: i) Preparation of promotional copy and production of promotional material for books and journals. ii) Schedule of direct mail and advertising for books and journals. iii) Mailing list research and contact database maintenance. iv) Organization of the display of products and services at appropriate scientific and professional meetings in the UK and overseas. 1.2 Devise and implement an effective marketing strategy for all Biochemical Society activities in liaison with the Group Head, Society Activities: (a) Devise and implement, in a cost-effective and efficient manner, the marketing and promotional strategy for the Biochemical Society e.g. meetings, education and/or policy activities as and when appropriate.
(b) In liaison with Head of Membership and Marketing Manager, devise and implement, in a cost-effective and efficient manner, the marketing strategy to promote the Society s membership with a view to retaining existing members and recruiting new members. (c) Contribute to and implement, in a cost effective way, the marketing and promotional strategy for The Biochemist. (d) Contribute to and implement, in a cost-effective and efficient manner, the promotion of educational and/or policy activities as and when appropriate. 1.3 Devise and implement an effective marketing strategy for Portland Customer Services in liaison with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services: (a) Contribute to and implement, in a cost-effective and efficient manner the marketing promotional plan for Portland Customer Services (b) Contribute to and implement, in a timely and cost-effective manner, promotions to new/existing clients. (c) Offer additional marketing services to existing clients, if/when the opportunity arises. 1.4 Manage and implement website and online communications in liaison with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services: (a) Monitor all Biochemical Society, Portland Press Limited and Portland Customer Services websites to ensure content is up-to-date, compelling and dynamic. (b) Ensure all online communications convey the appropriate brand image. (c) Explore and develop (if appropriate) online communication opportunities to maximize usage and market presence i.e. blogs, social networking. (d) Liaise with Head of Software Development to ensure all websites and online communications are being used to their fullest potential. 1.5 Market Intelligence (a) Collection, maintenance and analysis of marketing intelligence on customers, competitors and market conditions in all markets. (b) Represent Portland Press and the Biochemical Society (and external clients if appropriate) at relevant conferences, exhibitions and other events in the UK and overseas, speaking and presenting where appropriate, the objective of attending being to meet existing customers, identify new prospects and to monitor competitor activity. (c) Liaise with the appropriate departments to maximize promotion of new products and services. 1.6 Membership of the Biochemical Society/Portland Press management teams (a) In liaison with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services and
other Group Heads, contribute to the setting and subsequent following of the annual budget (including capital expenditure) for the marketing and sales department. (b) In liaison with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Service and Sales and Licensing Manager, contribute to the setting of journal, electronic resources and book pricing. (c) Liaise as and when appropriate to ensure an effective contribution by the marketing and sales department. 1.7 Create, maintain and enhance working relationships (a) Establish and maintain the trust and support of one s subordinates. (b) Establish and maintain the trust and support of one s immediate manager. (c) Establish and maintain relationships with colleagues. 1.8 Perform other work as directed by the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Service This position requires international travel. 2. Supervision 3.1 Received - i.e., what checks are there on the work, how often and by whom? (a) Responsible for ensuring the Marketing Manager fulfils the requirements of his/her job description, identifying training needs and carrying out appraisal following company procedure. (b) Responsible for ensuring the Marketing Executive fulfils the requirements of his/her job description, identifying training needs and carrying out appraisal following company procedure. (c) Responsible for ensuring the Marketing and Sales Administrator fulfils the
requirements of his/her job description, identifying training needs and carrying out appraisal following company procedure. (d) In consultation with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services, give guidance to the Sales and Licensing Manager relating to overlap between sales and marketing. (e) In consultation with the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Service, give guidance to Customer Services Manager relating to procedures agreed with existing or new customers. 4. Responsibility and Authority 4.1 Contacts (a) Internal: All staff within Portland Press and the Biochemical Society, at all levels (b) External: agents, aggregators, authors/editors, customers, clients, sponsors and suppliers 4.2 Committees/Working Parties Any committee or working party as directed by the Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services. 4.3 Materials and/or money (a) Authority to approve work with external suppliers (e.g. printers, designers, mailing houses, etc.) (b) Responsibility for checking all invoices in respect of work carried out by external suppliers for the marketing department. (d) Authority to sign cheque-requisition forms for marketing/sales expenditure up to 5000.00. (e) Responsibility to ensure that the cost to fund travel remains within budget. 4.4 Staff Relations Authority to recruit, train, appraise and discipline staff to correct performance or any other problems, e.g. time-keeping, following procedures as set out in Staff Handbook, after appropriate liaison with Group Head of Marketing and Customer Services. 5. Special Factors, Characteristics of the post not previously covered The post holder must be able to deal confidently with internal and external contacts at all levels of seniority, and must be able to set priorities for his/her own work. Excellent administrative skills are vital, as is the ability to write concise, coherent and accurate reports. A broad understanding of the
scientific publishing process, especially relating to subscription fulfilment, copyright licensing and contracts is necessary. A high level of computer literacy and a good knowledge of databases are also essential. 6. Minimum Requirements of the position holder - the "Person Specification" 6.1 Education/Qualifications Educated to degree level (preferably with a science or business bias).
