PECO and The Exeln Fundatin, in partnership with the Natinal Energy Educatin Develpment (NEED) Prject and The Franklin Institute, are ffering PEEP 2.0 with a series f energy wrkshps, educatinal energy audits and the PECO Innvatin Challenge, a STEM-fcused energy prgram fr grades 4-12. This prgram brings tgether standards-based curriculum, teacher training, STEM innvatin challenges and many ther engaging and fun activities. The PECO Innvatin Challenge is a cllabrative educatinal initiative designed t empwer yung students t explre pprtunities in STEM and help them discver their wn path t innvatin thrugh a variety f classrm subjects. PEEP 2.0 is designed t help educatrs bring energy int the schl and t prvide all the tls and resurces necessary fr students and teachers t learn tgether, explre energy tgether, and teach their lcal cmmunities abut energy. The PECO Innvatin Challenge includes: District standards aligned curriculum A $500 grant fr supplies t cmplete the challenge A series f PECO Innvatin Challenge starters A free half-day Educatinal Energy Audit fr students t learn abut their schl building with energy prfessinals The pprtunity t attend a PEEP 2.0 wrkshp fr energy training and curriculum - Webinars t highlight pprtunities within the PECO Innvatin Challenge PECO Innvatin Challenge and STEM Career Sympsium n Tuesday, May 22, 2018 where schl teams shwcase their challenge prjects and learn mre abut STEM careers in energy. Students and educatrs engage in science, technlgy, engineering and mathematics activities in classrm and extracurricular activities while learning fundamental principles f energy use and cnservatin. Students learn best when engaged in inquiry learning, and the activities and explratins included in the prgram allw them t think, explre, share, and develp a prfund respect fr energy and the wrld arund them. We knw that teaching thers helps us learn as well, and the Kids Teaching Kids philsphy wven thrughut The NEED Prject curriculum helps keep students f all learning styles engaged and excited t learn. What is expected f schls participating in the PECO Innvatin Challenge? 1. Incrprate the prgram s energy-fcused curriculum and related activities int yur classrm. 2. Wrking in classrms r in an extracurricular setting, chse r design an energy-fcused Innvatin Challenge (sme samples are prvided in this applicatin packet) and get started! 3. Wrk with students, faculty, parents and cmmunity members t plan and implement the STEM fcused challenge. 4. Wrk with yur student team t dcument prgress n the challenge. Research, explre, learn, share, reach ut t experts, and mre. 5. Participate in prgram calls and webinars t review prgress and discuss cncerns as a grup. 6. Share abut yur prgram via yur schl and cmmunity cmmunicatin netwrks and scial media. Fr example, PTA newsletter, cmmunity newsletter, Facebk, Instagram, Twitter. Schls seeking t prvide students an pprtunity t engage their minds in the Challenge while learning many ther skills like public speaking, team wrk, and mre. 2017-2018 3

PECO Innvatin Challenge Prmpt Using an energy cncept and a challenge r prblem within that cncept, design r create an innvative slutin fr the challenge. Explre energy cncepts as a class. Use student questins and student learning t identify prblems, issues, cncerns, and questins related t an energy surce, energy technlgy, r cnsumer need. Design r create a slutin t ne r mre f the challenges yu have identified. Innvatin Challenge Samples use these fr inspiratin, r create yur wn! Micrgrid In the last electin, the cunty citizens decided that sustainability wuld becme a pririty in yur cunty. Yur cmmunity has decided that their first gal will be t becme energy independent, creating a micrgrid. 1. Design a micrgrid system fr yur cmmunity. Decide the bundaries f yur cmmunity, (neighbrhd, twn, city, etc.). Estimate the number f hmes, businesses, and industry. that wuld be served by the micrgrid system. Identify any existing electricity generatin facilities, sites r equipment within yur cmmunity. Identify any electrical infrastructure presently in place in yur cmmunity. Determine the amunt f pwer required t supply the energy fr yur cmmunity. Plan fr new electricity generatin that will supply the remaining pwer needed fr yur cmmunity. At least 50% f this pwer must be renewable. 2. Create a map f the cmmunity, highlighting its brders (streets, landmarks, water features, etc.) and indicating existing hmes, businesses, schls, industry, and existing electricity generatin facilities and infrastructure. 3. Create an verlay f the map that shws new facilities r technlgies that will be installed t create yur micrgrid system. Indicate the pwer generating capacity f new facilities r technlgies fr each site. 4. Write a detailed descriptin f the new facilities r technlgies that will be built t prvide pwer t cnsumers within the cmmunity micrgrid system. 5. Explain the cmmunity s plan t tie int the larger grid system. 6. Explain the advantages and disadvantages fr yur cmmunity f perating the micrgrid as planned (envirnmental, ecnmic, lgistical, etc.) Optin: Fr a simpler versin ask students t d the micrgrid fr a new schl building, fllwing any applicable prtcls abve. Hwever, slar has its challenges that prevent it frm being ur energy savir. Presently, slar energy prvides 10 MW f the pwer needed fr thse in the city f Philadelphia. Design a plan t incrprate slar int the greater Philadelphia area that is supprted by existing infrastructure but creates/addresses pwer strage, prvides 10 additinal MW f pwer, and des nt require the use f mre than 20 acres f land. Transprtatin and Electricity As ppularity f Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) rises with mdels like the Tesla Mdel-S, Nissan Leaf, and Chevy Vlt, mre and mre Americans must plug-in their vehicles after their day-t-day travels. Devise a set f strategies t meet the additinal demand fr electric pwer f these vehicles. These strategies must address the incrpratin f renewable energy, reprting f data between plug-in vehicle users and utilities, and efficiency f charging mechanisms. 4 PEEP 2.0

Balancing the Envirnment and Ecnmy The Nrtheast U.S. is very energy-rich in its resurces and industry. Much f the energy used fr electric pwer generatin is still attributable t cal, which is a majr emitter f carbn dixide. Balance PA s pwer generatin in a way that prvides adequate pwer, reduces carbn emissins, AND prtects the ecnmy and thse jbs related t the cal industry while supplying the energy frm ther surces. Using Technlgy t Increase Energy Cnservatin and Efficiency Design an app fr tablet and mbile that wuld allw smene t identify the best energy efficiency discunts and rebates available based n yur lcatin. The app culd cnnect with lcal utilities, cntractrs, and retailers t prvide current rebates, discunts, sales, etc. fr energy efficient services, prducts and materials.
