Participation in Higher Education Analysis published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England shows the proportion of young people who participate in Higher Education. This is based on the combined participation rates of those aged 18 between 2005 and 2009 who entered HE between 2005-06 and 2010-11 academic years. Further information can be found at http://www.hefce.ac.uk/analysis/yp/polar/ Chart 3.4 The following chart shows whether the level of young participation in higher education in different areas is higher or lower than expected, based on factors known to have a bearing on participation. The analysis is based on 5 cohorts of young people, who were aged 18 between 2006-07 and 2010-11 academic years. The participation gap is expressed as a percentage point difference from the expected young participation level. For example if the young participation rate is 30 per cent and it was expected to be 40 per cent, then the participation gap is estimated as -10 percentage points.
