5 APPRENTICESHIPS APPRENTICE GUIDE TO ACADEMY APPRENTICE LIAM ARMSTRONG AT ATKINS GLOBAL I started working as a Design Engineer with Atkins Global in September after earning a place on the Academy. The selection process was quite difficult as I completed a series of aptitude tests, but it ensured that the best people were chosen for the jobs. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A Levels Advanced APPRENTICESHIP QUALIFICATIONS Level 4 Higher in (BTEC HNC) + Operations and Maintenance + Mechanical + Electrical + Foundation Degree in Nuclear CAREER + Incorporated Engineer + Chartered Engineer I had always wanted to complete an over going to university, so when I heard about the advanced level that the Academy offers I thought this would be an opportunity to gain as much experience as possible. I was really interested in learning the practical skills as well as completing assignment based work at the college, which will provide me with a stronger understanding of the job and allow me to reflect on what I ve learnt. I attend college three days a week studying different modules of work such as maths, engineering design, CAD, welding, electrical and loads more. 5 GCSE (A-C) Aptitude Test Pass/ Level 3 Diploma STEM Academy (Level 3 BTEC Diploma/City and Guilds 2850) + Mechanical Maintenance + Machining + Welding and Fabrication + Design + Electrical Employer/ Sector appropriate additional Training courses, Short qualifications and Behavioural skills Higher Education Enhancement HNC/HND in + Operations and Maintenance + Mechanical or + Electrical + Technician So far I am really enjoying my. It s hard work but it keeps me on my toes and I like the challenge. I have been given more responsibility than I had anticipated, having the opportunity to work on solo projects however the support is always there whenever I need it. My favourite aspect of the job is designing and I find it really fulfilling being able to work a project from the start through to seeing the end result. Level 2 & Motor Vehicle Level 3 Advanced (City & Guilds 2850) + Mechanical Maintenance + Machining + Welding and Fabrication + Design + Electrical + Motor Vehicle IMI Bridging Course + Technician Atkins see Apprentices as a long term commitment so it s great to know that I have the option to stay with them for the duration of my career. I eventually hope to become a Chartered Engineer and the company will support me in reaching this goal and provide the essential training I need to get there. KEY Level 2 Level 3 Higher Education 4 GCSEs (A-D) Level 1 Certificate/ Diploma in & Motor Vehicle Level 2 Intermediate (City& Guilds Mechanical + Maintenance + Machining + Welding and Fabrication + Design + Electrical + Motor Vehicle IMI + Technician 8 9

6 APPRENTICESHIPS Civil and the the Built Environment APPRENTICE GUIDE TO ACADEMY APPRENTICE ANDREW POTTS AT MORGAN SINDALL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS APPRENTICESHIP QUALIFICATIONS CAREER I am currently studying on the Civil Academy and through the programme I have gained employment with Morgan Sindall. I was interested in an apprenticeship as I was aware that I would earn a good wage while learning new skills and gaining an industry standard qualification. A Levels Advanced Level 4 Higher in Civil (Built Environment NVQ4 & HNC) + Site Managers + Architects + Quantity Surveyors + Design I will initially be working as a Site Engineer, eventually training to become a Project Manager with the company. I originally trained to be a plumber at Lakes College with the intention of working in the trade for a few years, however after speaking with staff at the college about the Academy I felt this was an ideal opportunity to further my career. Thanks to the programme I will be working at an advanced level compared to a regular, learning the broader aspects of the industry such as the social and economic impacts, as opposed to focussing solely on the job itself. I am hoping that this allows me to take on more responsibility and gain as much experience as possible. I am in the process of completing my mandatory coursework before I begin my in January. The academic side of things is challenging but it s great for preparing me for the workplace. So far I am really enjoying the excellent level of support I am receiving from the college and my tutors, who are always happy to help and provide the knowledge and resources I need. Everyone on my course has chosen the programme as they really want to learn which has created a focussed and committed working environment. It s a fantastic opportunity to be paid to train at a higher level, knowing my education costs are covered, and that Morgan Sindall are providing me with a job for life. 5 GCSEs (A- C) Aptitude Test Pass/Level 3 Diploma (construction and Civils) 4 GCSEs (A- D) / Level 1 Diploma in Construction Civil Academy Level 3 Advanced Built Environment Employer/Sector appropriate additional Training courses, Short qualifications and Behavioural skills Level 3 Advanced + Electrical Installation + Plumbing + Joinery + Painting and Decorating + Brickwork Level 2 Intermediate + Electrical Installation + Plumbing + Joinery + Painting and Decorating + Groundswork + Brickwork Higher Education Enhancement HNC in Built Environment Bridging Course + Site Managers + Architects + Quantity Surveyors + Design + Advanced Craftsman + Craftsman KEY Level 2 Level 3 Higher Education All applicants will be considered for an apprenticeship at the appropriate level following initial assessment. The above chart is a guide to entry requirements

7 APPRENTICESHIPS Business APPRENTICE GUIDE TO ACADEMY APPRENTICE SOPHIE COCKTON AT AMEC I m currently completing my with AMEC, where I am working and studying on the Business Academy. Prior to becoming an Apprentice I had already secured employment with the company, however when I was offered the opportunity to gain a qualification through the programme at an advanced level I jumped at the chance. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A Levels Advanced APPRENTICESHIP QUALIFICATIONS Level 4 Higher in Business + Business Administration + Management + AAT + Accounting + IT Higher Education Enhancement HNC & HND in Business Management CAREER + Business Manager + IT Manager My role with AMEC is a Data Controller. Every day is different, and I am now learning more while studying than I had been in my previous position. I have been given more responsibility than I initially expected, taking on technical assistance work which gives me further experience above an admin role. 5 GCSEs (A- C) Aptitude Test Pass/ Level 2 Certificate/ Diploma in Business Business Academy Level 3 Business Administration Level 3 Business Management Employer/Sector appropriate additional Training courses, Short qualifications and Behavioural skills + Team Leader Manager The great thing about working with AMEC on the Academy is that I get to take on further qualifications throughout my time there. My aim is to eventually become a Project Manager, and I know I ll be supported in achieving this as the company are committed to helping its staff reach their full potential. It s comforting to know that I will have employment as long as I need it. Level 3 Advanced + Business Administration + Business Management + IT + Customer Service + Team Leading + Retail + AAT Accounting + Team Leader I study in college one day a week on a First Line Management course, while also working towards an additional Business Administration qualification in my own time.
