Job Description Job Title: Internal (Part Time) Hours: 21 per week with some evening, weekend and bank holiday work required. Location: London Duration: Permanent Responsible To: Head of Media & PR Works With/Key Contact: Staff & Managers across the Home Media Celebrities, Ambassadors and VIPs Corporate Partners and Charity Partners External PR and Media Agencies Responsible For: N/A Salary: 17,100 per annum (based on a full-time equivalent of 28,500 per annum) Context and Background Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is one of the oldest and best-known animal welfare organisations in the world. We currently operate from three centres in Battersea, Old Windsor in Berkshire, and Brands Hatch in Kent and last year our 430 staff and 1,000 volunteers cared for over 7000 dogs and cats. Battersea is currently the 14 th best known charity in the UK and our department have worked hard to achieve this ranking by devising and executing award-winning campaigns. The team works to promote Battersea s animals, events and campaigns, and to further enhance and protect our brand and profile. We are entering a period of exceptional opportunities to enhance Battersea s position of leadership in the animal welfare sector and to keep Battersea front of mind. The Internal will work with colleagues across the Home s three centres to communicate the charity to internal audiences. They will create and deliver effective and engaging internal communications and support the Home s pro-active and reactive media requirements, working with external agencies, corporates, celebrity supporters, and other partners on joint promotional activity that benefits Battersea. Main purpose of the role To produce a range of timely and informative communications for the charity s staff and volunteers that promote key Battersea events, projects or partnerships. Overall Objectives Work with colleagues across Battersea s three centres to devise and deliver internal communications for the charity s staff and volunteers. Devise and implement creative internal communications plans to promote key Battersea events, projects or partnerships, using a broad range of communications tools and channels.
Responsibilities Approx % of time Deliver a range of internal communications to keep Battersea staff at all three centres 50% informed of latest developments at the Home. Contribute to and issue the Home s weekly internal Bulletin to go out to all staff and 30% Trustees at the charity. Provides key communications support to Battersea s centres and campaigns, working 10% with colleagues in Marketing and Public Affairs to reach target audiences using a broad range of communications channels and tailoring messaging accordingly. Supports the department with photography and filming. 5% Monitors and evaluates the success of internal communications activity, providing 5% monthly information to the Head of Media & PR Responds to all media enquiries swiftly and efficiently, providing factually correct and on >5% message information to the journalists deadline and signing off quotes and copy with relevant senior staff. Briefs and supervises spokespeople, agents, and photographers or camera crews ahead >5% of media interviews, photo calls, and events. Writes and issues engaging press releases as required to the media and uploads these >5% to the Battersea online Media centre. Decision Making and Accountabilities Determining the currency of stories within the Home and their appeal to internal or external audiences. Co-ordinating contributions to and issuing the weekly staff e-newsletter. Editorial judgement on when and where to provide Battersea reaction to events or issues in the news. For ensuring the positive reputation of the Home by monitoring media interviews, photo calls and filming thoroughly briefing spokespeople. Whether to answer a media call or whether to refer this to more senior colleagues. For the reputation of the Home through the development and maintenance of relationships with journalists. Applying knowledge of brand and key messages when responding to social media posts. Person Specification Essential qualifications, experience and skills Job Specification Sound knowledge of marketing communications functions particularly Internal. Excellent written and verbal skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to adapt your communication style for different groups Experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy office environment Proven experience of working constructively and collaboratively with colleagues from different teams including senior managers Experience of suggesting and taking the initiative about new ways of working that have been successfully implemented
IT literate with good experience of MS Office and additional experience of using CMS, media databases and using social media programmes regularly on behalf of an employer Photography and photo editing skills. Experience of positively embracing and adapting to change Commitment to and understanding of the vision and mission of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Ability to travel between the Home s three sites and to external events and filming Understands and demonstrates tact and diplomacy when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues Desirable qualifications, experience and skills Knowledge and experience of dealing with the media, including handling difficult or sensitive issues Experience of working in an in-house press office environment and managing film crews. Experience of facilitating culture change. Understanding of how to effectively create content for an Intranet.
