TOWN OF BRECKENRIDGE POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Department: Division: Position Classification(s): Pay Plan Level(s): Work Status/Schedule(s): FLSA Status: Recreation Specialist I-Adventure Programs Instructor Recreation Programs Part-time/Seasonal P-III/S-III Part-time Non-Exempt *[Classification, Pay Plan Level and Work Status subject to change, based on management needs] NATURE OF WORK Recreation Specialist I s - Adventure Programs Instructors are responsible for assisting in the creation & implementation of various programs and services to guests of the Recreation Department. The primary purpose is the design, development and/or creation of programs or services, and instruction of skills related to the various programs or services. Implementation of programs and services involves setting up and preparing assigned facility space and equipment, performing light maintenance duties, registration, handling cash, driving town vehicles within non-commercial limits, interfacing with participants, coaching, instructing, scheduling, enforcing department policies and procedures, ensuring safety, and collecting evaluations and patron feedback. Individuals in this position instruct climbing programs/lessons, assess climbers ability to belay, top rope, and lead climb, orient climbers to the bouldering area, conduct climbing wall maintenance and enforce safety procedures and practices to ensure the safety of climbers and staff. Individuals in this position may also instruct mountain biking, lead mountain biking trips and instruct basic mountain bike maintenance. Individual(s) in this position will be responsible for providing guided hikes and recreation/nature education of the flora and fauna to locals and visitors of all ages and experience levels. The incumbent will also be required to provide customer service and the ability to meet most service and informational needs of guests in a knowledgeable and experienced manner. This is a position of significant customer service impact. SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED Works under the direct supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Coordinator and the general supervision of the Department Management. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & EXPECTATIONS The incumbent in this position must be able to successfully perform and is responsible for the fulfillment of the following essential job functions and duties. Leader: Responsible for setting an example for team membership, positive attitude, customer service, and professionalism in the workplace. A critical component of this leadership role includes administrating resources in an effort to achieve goals and objectives established by the Division Manager, Director of Recreation and other Town management. In addition to guiding other employees, this individual must demonstrate initiative and leadership by assuming responsibility and accountability for project completion and for ensuring that quality work and service are a focus. Team Member: Perform work in a team-based environment supporting the Recreation Department mission and the goals, philosophies, and initiatives of his/her Manager and Director. The individual performs work in a manner consistent with the town s Leadership Model, its mission, vision and objectives. The incumbent may be a member of a variety of Recreation Department Committees. Guest Relations: Interact with guests in a positive and professional manner, utilizing excellent guest service standards, while having the ability to effectively resolve conflicts or disputes. Provide exceptional guest service. o Provide bouldering and climbing orientations, top rope and lead assessments. o Greet customers, provide information, assist with registrations and monitor climbing techniques. Communication: Utilize effective written and oral communication techniques to communicate with program participants, guests, Recreation Department staff, TOB staff, and the public. o Create, complete and maintain rosters, attendance sheets, customer skills assessments, evaluations, records and reports. Cash Handling/Financial Management: Handle cash in a manner consistent with specified cash handling procedures. Conduct transactions, purchase equipment, and use credit card and petty cash consistent with town policies and procedures. Technology: Interface with recreation software for the purpose of conducting transactions, completing reports, and recording information necessary to carry out all Recreation Department functions. Maintain a level of proficiency in software operations in order to assure timely completion of transactions with guests. Effectively utilize the intranet and computer programs required to complete job duties. Programs & Services: Implement preplanned programs and services to guests in a friendly and guest service oriented manner. Assist in creating and designing program or service activities under the guidance of a recreation Specialist II, supervisor, or coordinator. Teach skills following appropriate progression and educational techniques in order to achieve transfer of knowledge, skills or abilities. This may involve specific industry or technical knowledge. This position may also involve instructing, and coaching various programs/services. Assist with the publicity and marketing of programs or services. Keep abreast of program, service and facility offerings so that Page 2 of 6

this information can be accurately conveyed to guests. Listen to guest feedback and convey pertinent information to a supervisor. Implementation of programs and services involves setting up and preparing assigned facility space and equipment, performing light maintenance duties, registration and other paperwork, organizing supplies and equipment, inventory, handling cash, driving town vehicles within non-commercial limits, interfacing with participants, scheduling, enforcing department policies and procedures, and ensuring safety. o Conduct climbing wall certification tests, orientations, belay rides and instruction in a manner consistent with Department and industry climbing safety standards and practices. o Instruct program participants on climbing techniques and practices. o Assist with climbing field trips and transport participants to climbing sites when needed. o Plan and execute skill and maneuver based mountain bike lessons in both cross country and downhill settings. o Clearly explain and demonstrate riding techniques such as front and rear wheel lifts, switchbacks, banked and flat corners, Ladder Bridge, raised trails, technical climbs and descents. o Teach basic bike maintenance, such as changing flat tires, broken chains, and cleaning bike. o Ability to lead a variety of outdoor recreation related programs and services. Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in a variety of adventure activities. o Ability to visually monitor participants and adjust routines based on general ability level of participants. Facilities: Observes facility use and condition, conduct safety checks, record participation data, submit work orders, and provide for basic cleaning or routine maintenance as necessary. o Inspect, clean and maintain climbing wall and technical equipment.set routes and maintain necessary equipment for climbing wall. o Completes necessary facility and maintenance logs. Department Resources: Adhere to Town of Breckenridge and Department policies, procedures and practices in order to ensure the preservation of resources such as equipment, cash, facilities, and vehicles. Observe, document, and report problems to a recreation supervisor or coordinator. Complete required paperwork as it pertains to the use of resources, such as inspections, inventories, etc. Drive vehicles according to safety practices and Town policies and practices. Safety: Adhere to and enforce Town of Breckenridge and Department safety policies, procedures and practices in order to ensure the safety of guests and staff. Be aware of and contribute to the development of safety practices, and observe, document and report unsafe situations to a supervisor. Participate in safety training and respond to emergencies in an effective and appropriate manner that is consistent with common safety practices. Complete accident/incident reports as required. o Conduct climbing wall maintenance, route setting, programming, participant supervision, and operation of the climbing wall via departmental and industry safety practices. o Instruct varying levels of individual and group climbing and outdoor recreation programs according to departmental and industry standard and utilizing appropriate safety and risk management practices. o Knowledge of climbing techniques including but not limited to top rope/lead climbing and a thorough understanding of the safe use of climbing equipment used at the Breckenridge Recreation Center. o Instruct varying levels of individual and group mountain bike programs according to departmental and industry standard and utilizing appropriate safety and risk management practices. Training & Continued Education: Attend required Town of Breckenridge and Departmental trainings, orientations, and meetings as necessary. Maintain skills and abilities to effectively carryout all job functions. Assist with training/mentoring of volunteers and new staff members. o Knowledge of and demonstrated skills in climbing wall program and operations Skill to demonstrate climbing techniques and set routes. General Duties: Perform related work and special projects as assigned. Assist other divisions / departments as required. Works various shifts including days, evening, weekends and holidays. Performs light administrative tasks such as organizing supplies and materials, inventory, assisting with mailings and marketing, and assisting with creating program materials. o Basic bike mechanics and maintenance: adjusting bike to fit participant, suspension sag and rebound set-up, flat tires, broken chains, replacing brake pads, adjusting headsets, correct cleaning and maintenance. o Load participant bikes to transport to sites when needed. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED This position may require the use of a computer, various software programs, cash register, telephone, paging system, copier/fax/printer, camera, and other types of office equipment. Recreation supplies of various sorts will be used including sports equipment, arts and craft supplies, games and toys. General cleaning equipment such as chemicals and supplies will be used. This position may use first aid equipment, AED, and other safety equipment. Safe & proper use/storage of material and equipment used and understand that others may use equipment throughout the facility. This position will require use of technical equipment including climbing equipment such as ropes, harnesses, and carabineers; belay devices, ladders, scaffolds, various hand tools and drills. Other technical outdoor equipment, mountain bikes, stands and pertinent safety equipment may also be used. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: Work is performed with a high degree of public interaction and communication with exposure to periods of high activity and possible stressful interaction with the public. Work is subject to varying shifts. Physical activities include long periods of standing and sitting, listening, counting, reading, moderate lifting, cleaning, and general moving about the facility. Instructor must be in appropriate physical shape and health to perform instruction and teach classes. Most positions involve being indoors and outdoors with active work in a group setting with a high degree of interaction, particularly with children. Exposure to periods of loud noises, physical activity including jumping, pulling, pushing, reaching, carrying, stooping, bending, biking, hiking, kneeling, demonstrating physical movement or skills, verbal communication, hearing, visually observing participants, throwing, the ability to speak loudly and clearly, and lifting of 15-50 pounds, and the use of town vehicles. This position involves work in both indoor and outdoor setting with exposure to various weather conditions and heights. Periods of heavy physical activity may be required. May support weights of up to 200 pounds with ropes, carry bikes, backpacks and equipment and facilitate assistance to participants. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING: To qualify for this position the candidate or employee must pass a criminal background check as described in the Recreation Department Criminal History Background Check & Confidentiality Policy. Must be at least 18 years of age, with a high school diploma or GED Must have one year or more of customer service experience. Must have one or more years climbing experience. One or more years of work related experience instructing or coaching youth activities or sports preferred. Knowledge of safe climbing techniques and a thorough understanding of the safe use of climbing equipment required. Knowledge and use of knots, harnesses, and belaying. Demonstrated route setting skills and knowledge of indoor climbing procedures and practices preferred. Previous experience working in a climbing gym, instructing climbing to students, outdoor climbing, and route setting preferred. Ability to belay a lead climber and lead climb on fixed quick draws at a 5.8 YDS level preferred. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability with mountain biking and/or personal hiking and age specific techniques/skills via work history and/or biking experience preferred. Experience teaching skills related to outdoor recreation, environmental education, or other pertinent outdoor activities preferred. Familiarity with the Town of Breckenridge open space trail system and knowledge of natural resources, local flora and fauna preferred. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATIONS Community CPR, first aid and AED training required within 60 days of hire. Preventing disease transmission (PDT) required within 60 days of hire. Valid Colorado Driver s license required for any employees where driving would be a component of the position. Nationally recognized climbing instructor certificate attained through organizations such as American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA), International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA) preferred. Current Wilderness First Aid or more advanced wilderness medicine certification perferred. Page 5 of 6
