Prject Plan Reprt: Heat Treat Subgrup 1.0 Objective The purpse f IPRO 304 is t create a sftware package t assist A. Finkl & Sns in tracking f parts in heat treatment furnaces. Objective fr Spring 2008: T recnstruct and imprve the furnace lading sftware develped by IPRO 304 (Fall 2007) resulting in a prgram with the fllwing attributes: Increased ease f use via: Cmpatibility with ppular CAD packages (i.e. PrE r UGS) Slid Mdeling Sftware capabilities: Shape display in virtual furnace Mvement f shapes arund the furnace Resizing f shapes within furnace t match actual part specificatins Save and lad cnfiguratins f specific furnace setups Test the sftware with sample database Rbust develpment fr future mdificatins including: A cmplete and easily updated database f all Finkl part shapes Part tracking/histry fr quality cntrl 2.0. Backgrund Finkl is an industrial steel manufacturer f custm, high quality steel parts fr ther industries (stamp mlding fr aut, aircraft landing gear, die steel fr ther manufactures, etc) The cmpany perfrms the entire prcess frm smelting the steel, casting and frging, heat treating, and machining f their parts. Currently in their heat treatment prcess at Finkl, apprximately 10% f their parts that are belw cmpany quality standards. Finkl has n efficient way f tracking where specific parts are in relatin t each ther while in the furnace. S when a part cmes ut belw standards, it is hard t trace back where that part was in the furnace and why it
was nt treated prperly. Finkl has enlisted the help f IIT students, which plan t implement a sftware prgram that Finkl can use t create a virtual furnace with the parts that will be heat treated and their specific lcatins in the furnace. When parts cme ut belw quality standards, the prgram wuld allw Finkl t examine the lcatin f the parts within the furnace and determine the reasn fr sub-par quality. The previus semester IPRO was able t develp a sftware prgram that displayed the different Finkl shapes; hwever, the prgram nly displays a single shape at a time withut the ability t mve r resize the shape. They were als able t mdel abut half f the Finkl shape cdes in PrE.. When a large number f parts fail, they must be retreated t meet cmpany quality standards. Taking the time t retreat the prcess takes bth time and mney away frm the cmpany. If we can help t identify the cause f the heat treatment failure, this wuld save the cmpany a large amunt f mney each year. T be able t determine the cause f the heat treat failure, the team hpes t develp a visual database f the furnace layut t help track parts lcatin within the furnace. 3.0. Methdlgy In rder t develp a sftware prgram t track the placement f Finkl parts in the heat treat cycle we must: - Meet with Finkl t determine the current prblem and a better understanding f the prblem definitin. - Examine the sftware develped by the previus semester IPRO Ptential slutins t the prblem will be: - Tested in the sample database prvided t us by Finkl - Tested with the wrkmen/frman at Finkl The prblem faced is that Finkl lacks a methd t track and recrd the physical placement f parts within the furnace fr reference when parts prduced are nt up t cmpany quality standards. T cmbat this prblem the Heat Treatment grup f IPRO 304 will fcus n creating a prgram which mirrrs the furnace as well as the psitin f the cmpnents within the furnace. T accmplish this we must: - Meet with Finkl t establish criteria desired fr the prgram - Lk at the methds used currently by Finkl - Find sftware t accmplish what we wish t design
- Design and cmpile a prgram t meet the gals set frth by finkl Ptential slutins t the prblem f recrding where the parts are withing the furnace will be based n several criteria. T accmplish this we must: - Reverse engineer the previus semester s sftware - Design a new prgram based n requirements frm Finkl - Test the prgram t see if it functins t Finkl's standards - Based n the prgram tests and time, imprvements may be made t imprve the prgram The research and data cllected will be dcumented and archived in tw lcatins. One f thse being igrups/iknw, which will present the material t anyne wh wishes t see the wrk that has been dne. Anther place the infrmatin will be available will be the engineering ntebk, which shuld be electrnically published. These tw methds prvide easy access t all f the wrk dne s that future IPRO grups d nt waste time ding wrk that has already been cmpleted. T accmplish this we must: - Organize ur tests int easily readable charts - Pst research and testing results n igrups The final prduct will cnsist f an rganized reprt which summarizes and details all f the findings during this prject. The reprt will cnsists f all wrk dne including research, design, and testing. T accmplish this we must: - Create and rganize intr, cnclusin and final prpsitin pages - Cmpile and submit all research in n reprt with the pssibility f a prttype prgram 4.0. Expected Results
The team expects t have lked thrugh the sftware that was created and have determined hw the prgram perates and hw t implement the desired changes t the prgram with the current develpment kits used fr creating the sftware. Research methds f prgramming the desired bjectives and implement them. In the end f the semester we expect t have a running sftware that is capable f: lading desired shapes frm an existing shape database int the virtual furnace scale the shapes with respect t the virtual furnace mve and rient the shapes in the virtual furnace save the arrangement f shapes in the furnace int a database lad shapes cnfiguratins frm the database Als the team expect t have a cmplete database f 3D mdels f all shapes that Finkl heat treats. After these requirements are met the team expects t cme up with a test prcedure t analyze the functinality f the prgram and determine hw well it meets the functinal requirements. After the tests are cnducted, the team will have a wrking prttype f the prgram that wuld be presentable t Finkl and at IPRO day. 5.0 Budget The heat treat grup des nt require a budget at the mment since mst f the wrk will be in sftware develpment using sftware fr which the schl already has btained licences fr. 6.0 Prject Milestnes Week: 1. 1/22-1-25 2. 1/28-2/1 3. 2/4-2/8 -Meet with Finkl 4. 2/11-2/15 -Draft f prject plan -Cntinue lking at ld cde - Meet with Dr. Hu 5. 2/18-2/22 - Final prject plan due 6. 2/25-2/29 -Begin wrking n remaining shape cdes 7. 3/3-3/7 -Midterm Reprt Draft 1 -Pssibly begin cding new prgram
