1 Graphing Name: Period: 1. Title The title must describe what is being done. It must be in the following form. Date: / / The Relationship Between the and the 2. Axis and Labels: The independent variable goes on the x-axis The dependent goes on the y - axis 3. Labels & Units Each axis must have a label and include the units in which you are measuring. 4. Types of Graphs Bar Graphs: Used to graph information that is not continuous. Used to compare specific data of different items. Histogram: A bar graph where each interval represents a range. (5-10, 10-15, etc..) Unlike bar graphs, the bars are touching each other in this type of graph. Line Graphs: Used to show information that is continuous or connected. Line Graphs have an added step called Scaling How to Scale A Graph 1. Count the Spaces in each axis (don t count the lines) 2. Divide the upper range of data by the number of spaces to get equal intervals on each line.

2 Graphing and Scaling A Pleasantville teacher noticed there is a great deal of TV ads while watching the Super Bowl. She started tracking how many ads she witnessed throughout the 100 minutes. Her data is listed below: Title: After 10 minutes 2 ads After 20 minutes 5 ads After 30 minutes 8 ads After 40 minutes 8 ads After 50 minutes 11 ads After 60 minutes 12 ads After 70 minutes 16 ads After 80 minutes 18 ads After 90 minutes 19 ads After 100 minutes 20 ads Complete the graph to the right A student wanted to know if the intensity of florescent lights in classrooms has any effect on test grades. After every science test he added a florescent tube 10 watts higher than the previous. The result of his experiment are below. Classification Test, 82% Average, 10 Watt Bulb Microscope Test, 61% Average, 15 Watt Bulb Life Activities Test, 53% Average, 20 Watt Bulb Cell Parts Test, 97% Average, 25 Watt Bulb Cell Process Test, 72% Average, 30 Watt Bulb Scientific Method Test, 40% Average, 35 Watt Bulb Digestion Test, 34% Average, 40 Watt Bulb Circulation Test, 26% Average, 45 Watt Bulb Respiration Test, 9% Average, 50 Watt Bulb Title: Complete the graph to the right.

3 Scaling Practice Directions: Fill in the appropriate labels and units for the 3 tables on the page. Experiment #1: Mr. Coffee wanted to know if there was any correlation between the amount of weight on his back and how far he can sprint at full speed. Create a graph on next page (small graph) Experiment #2: I want bigger plants in my classroom. Maybe, if I add more and more fertilizer to the plants I have, they will grow faster and be humungous by the end of the school year. Create a graph on next page (medium graph). Experiment #3: Mr. Levine received a concussion when one of the uncoordinated basketball players hit him in the head with the ball during a game. As a result of this brain trauma, he decided to see if giving out candy as a reward would increase student performance on test grades. As he slowly increased the candy rewards, he measured how many points higher the students test average went up. Complete the data table to the right. Create a graph on the next page (large graph)
