1 th Grade News Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Berson February 08 Reading Skill Focus CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.. Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL..6 Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first- and third-person narrations. Math Standards and Strategies In Unit 9, students will focus on adding and subtracting mixed numbers using different strategies. They will use strategies which involve decomposing mixed numbers into a whole number and fraction and renaming mixed numbers as equivalent fractions greater than. Students will also solve problems involving line plots. The math standards we will be covering are: Current PYP Unit Unit: How We Organize Ourselves Central Idea: Human-made systems shape daily life. Question to discuss with your child: Who were the Marylanders who influenced the building of our new nation? Upcoming Events.NF.B.c Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction..md.b. Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (/, /, /8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection..nf.b.d Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. 2 Grade Parent Newsletter Dear Parents, Theme Unit 9 How can you help your child be successful in mathematics? In Unit 9, students will focus on adding and subtracting mixed numbers using different strategies. They will use strategies which involve decomposing mixed numbers into a whole number and fraction and renaming mixed numbers as equivalent fractions greater than. Students will also solve problems involving line plots. Vocabulary: Thank you for your support, Mrs. Berson and Mrs. Cosgrove Fractions: a number that names equal parts of a whole Equivalent Fractions: two or more fractions that name the same part of the whole or same point on a number line Example: 7 Mixed Number: a number with a whole part and a fractional part Decompose: to break up into parts Ex. Decompose a fraction Line Plot: a data display that uses a number line to show measurement data Important Concepts: - Using different strategies to add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators. - Writing mixed numbers as equivalent fractions greater than - Understanding that non-unit fractions can be decomposed into unit fractions. - Analyzing data on line plots Misconceptions: When subtracting a whole number and fraction, students tend to use whole number regrouping rules, rather than converting the whole number into a fraction greater than one. Example: Change into - = Things to Do: - Have your child help out at home when you are getting ingredients together for a recipe. Have them add amounts together that have like denominators. - Draw number lines to add mixed numbers. -Have your child roll a die times to make a mixed number. Ask your child to decompose or rename the number in as many ways as possible. Example: or 7
3 Strategies to Support Student Learning Adding Mixed Numbers Strategy Replace mixed numbers with equivalent fractions 5 7 To add using equivalent fractions, you 5 7 would replace with and with and then add and for a sum 8 6 of which is the same as. 8 8 Adding Mixed Numbers Strategy Reorder Addends 5 7 To reorder the addends, you would add = and add finally add 8 + Subtracting Whole Numbers and Mixed Numbers Reading Line Plots In this unit, students are expected to use data to create and interpret a line plot., decompose the whole number,, into an equivalent form of the number which is It is then easier to subtract -. Subtract the whole number - = and the fractions. The difference is.
