1 FSAID4_2015_2040_Draft_ILG_Projections Abstract: This layer maps irrigated cropland within Florida in 2015 and projected irrigated cropland in 2020, 2025, 2030, 2035, and Statewide irrigation conservation estimates were developed from exponential trends in USDA Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey reported irrigation intensity (water applied per area). Two exponential functions were developed from recent FRIS data ( ) and the whole dataset ( ) in order estimate conservation largely resulting from management changes (on newly irrigated lands or existing irrigated lands with microspray or drip systems) and to estimate a greater amount of conservation resulting from equipment and/or management improvements for other areas in the ILG. The statewide total conservation estimate is disaggregated at the polygon level based on the ratio of polygon-level irrigation demand to statewide irrigation demand. Statewide, the total conservation estimate approaches 14% of total irrigation demand by Everglades Agricultural Area polygons were assumed to not contribute to conservation. This layer maps freeze protected polygons and expected freeze protection irrigation demand in millions of gallons per day (MGD). Primary data source is USGS GOES ET temperature data ( ) for polygon-specific numbers of historical freeze events at locations in the 2015ILG. Future irrigated areas in the ILGs were used to estimate freeze protection demands through A 14-hour freeze event was assumed, with freeze protection water being applied at intensities based on irrigation system (0.07 in/hr for microspray and 0.2 in/hr for impact sprinkler). Freeze protection water was estimated for citrus, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, and ferns. Purpose: The purpose of this layer is to project irrigated acreage and water demand over the next 25 years, in five year increments. Projections varied by changes in irrigation intensity, crop mix, and land use. Estimates were derived on an average year and dry year basis. This layer also allows for polygon-level water conservation estimates for 2020 to 2040 to be used for planning purposes. Current and future freeze protection irrigation demand was spatially distributed in this layer. Future additions of irrigated citrus, and non-citrus may show some freeze protection demands based on location-specific historical intensities. Average annual number of freeze events is polygon-specific and is based on gridded ET data (USGS GOES ET). Freeze protection irrigation amount is calculated from a 14-hour freeze event and irrigation intensities dependent on irrigation system type.
