What is Fall Army Worm (FAW) Scientific Name: Spodoptera frugiperda FAW moth is a migratory pest native to N and S.America Occurs in large numbers and its caterpillars cause severe damage to more than 80 plant species 2

Host Range Cereals (maize, sorghum, rice, millet, wheat, barley) Fodder grasses (Bermuda grass, Hay grass, and Napier grass); sugar cane and cotton Other susceptible crop includes: Kales, Cabbages, Tomatoes, Capsicum, Ginger, Spinach, Amaranthus, Onions, Sugar beet, Citrus, Cucumber legumes/pulses, Banana and Sunflower 3

FAW identification Inverted Y Four black dots forming a square 4

FAW Damage in Maize 5

Status of Fall Armyworm Spread In the African continent, the pest was first reported in September 2016 in the West Africa region It was later reported in Central, Southern and East African regions In Kenya, FAW infestation was first detected in Trans Nzoia County in March 2017, on offseason irrigated maize. 6

Spread and likely impact on food Security and Economy Presence of fall armyworm reported in all counties except 7 (Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa & Lamu) Pest spreads rapidly and has potential to cause 100% loss in a wide range of crops 7

8

Threat in Maize Maize is the most important staple food crop in Kenya with an annual per capita consumption of 78kg Currently approx. 200,000 Ha infested (10%) Area under threat: 800,000Ha (40%) Estimated loss: 4.2m bags Value =Ksh.12.6B ( USD128M) (200,000Ha X 21Bags/Ha X Ksh.3,000/bag) 9

Such a huge loss will result in: National food insecurity, Loss of income and Livelihoods. FAW is a quarantine pest internationally, its presence will have a negative impact on regional and international trade. Thus this pest is of great socioeconomic importance and warrants urgent attention 10

Importance of Maize in Kenya Over reliance on maize: 11 Per capita consumption- 78kgs
