2 Agricultural cience 0 ample work program Compiled by the Queensland tudies Authority March 0 A work program is the school s plan of a course of study based on the relevant syllabus. Work programs allow for the characteristics of a school and its students to be considered when implementing the syllabus. chool work programs must demonstrate that syllabus dimensions and objectives inform student learning. Work programs provide information about the school s plan for course organisation, an outline of intended student learning and the assessment plan as outlined in the work program requirements for that syllabus. 5 ample unit of work Anatomy and physiology Overview A study of the anatomy and physiology of plants and animals and the diseases that affect these organisms. Technological advancements in plant and animal nutrition are considered. Time (h) 55 emester ustainable resource management factors Areas of study RM Plant and animal management RM oil and water management Plant science Animal science Key concepts P P A A The potential of agricultural production systems is based on the anatomy and physiology of agricultural plants. The agronomy of agricultural plants determines the efficiency of production systems. The potential of agricultural production systems is based on the anatomy and physiology of animals. Animal husbandry and management determines the efficiency of animal production systems. Possible learning experiences Define, describe and explain that plants and animals consist of cells, tissues and organs organised into specialised systems that carry out specific functions. Microscopic investigations of cells and tissues to identify and sketch organelles. Define, describe and explain the anatomical structures and physiological functions of plant and animal systems. Identify these in specimens. Explain the anatomical structures and physiological functions of plants and animals determine the nutrient requirements and efficiency of plants. Apply this information to problems and issues. Dissection and identification of plant and animal organs, including virtual dissections to link the structure to function. Collect and analyse faecal matter and rumen contents. Class discussion to evaluate information about new technologies/theories/ techniques and draw justified conclusions about the implementation of the technologies. Investigate physiological processes for gas exchange, energy production, and movement of materials through plants/animals, e.g. transpiration, photosynthesis, respiration. Identify and classify plants and animals including common weeds and pests according to observable characteristics. Review a paddock to identify and classify plants and animals. Explain the range of factors that influence plant and animal growth and development. Investigate the effect of nutrient levels on plant growth and development, and that plants and animals require nutrients in specific quantities. Queensland tudies Authority March 0 5

6 Possible learning experiences Measure soil features (e.g. moisture) and apply information to differences in plant growth and development. Explain how effective soil management techniques can improve crop health and increase productivity and recommend and justify management strategies for different scenarios. Apply understandings of plant and animal physiology to issues and problems. Investigate the effect of hormones, e.g. tropisms, on plant and animal development and responses. Measure growth rates of common crops and animals to compare results with agricultural industry standards. Rear broilers and investigate (collect and organise, analyse, interpret, evaluate, justify, communicate) the impact of nutrition on growth and development. Conduct plant and/or lamb nutrition trials including: - planning formulate questions, hypotheses and plans - collect and organise data - analyse, interpret and evaluate data - draw and justify conclusions - evaluate research methods to make recommendations. Water quality testing to collect and organise data. Analyse, interpret and evaluate data to draw conclusions and make recommendations about water quality and improvements to the quality. urvey pastures and analyse results to draw conclusions and make recommendations about quality and quantity of available food. Evaluate information about pests and diseases to draw conclusions and make decisions and recommendations about management approaches. urvey a crop to identify pest and disease problems to determine the pathogens and apply understandings to propose possible treatments. Perform skills specific to pest and disease management e.g. drenching. Use case studies (e.g. soil erosion, soil salinity) to apply understandings evaluate information to draw and justify conclusions and make and justify recommendations and justify. Research, collate and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources e.g. journals, internet. Communicate using language conventions to suit a report e.g. writing recommendations, analysing information. 6 Agricultural cience 0 ample work program
