November 2014 LACTIMED Weeks: Explore the world of the Mediterranean typical dairy products LACTIMED organises the "LACTIMED weeks" from 22 October to 15 November 2014; it will gather dairy producers from 5 Mediterranean regions in order to highlight the typical dairy products, an eloquent reflection of the territories they come from, in the framework of 4 international exhibition (Turin, Tunis, Beirut and Cairo) and a national exhibition (Athens). Stands held by producers, business meetings, conferences, taste workshops, exchanges of experience, etc. The LACTIMED weeks are designed to increase the visibility and the distribution of these products by targeting both general public and agribusiness specialists. A wide range of activities, also opened to public, will give the opportunity to meet men and women from local dairy chains and to discover characteristic flavours describing the 5 Mediterranean regions involved in the project (Alexandria and Beheira, Egypt ; Bekaa and Baalbeck-Hermel, Lebanon ; Bizerte and Beja, Tunisia ; Sicily, Italy ; Thessaly, Greece.) Besides these events, partners remain fully mobilised in the implementation of other activities in order to structure local dairy chains, by numerous actions for launching and supporting dairy clusters, for capacity development and for the organisation of finals in the framework of the regional competition of innovative projects. 2 2 sur 6 27/01/ :02 Tourism and local products: promising synergies for the development of rural areas in the Mediterranean LACTIMED will organise a workshop on "Tourism and local products: promising synergies for the development of rural areas in the Mediterranean" on Wednesday 5 November 2015 from am to 1.00 pm, in the framework of the 8th edition of the Mediterranean Economic Week. It will aim to inform participants on benefits of promoting jointly tourism and local products for rural areas through concrete examples of local and regional initiatives in the Mediterranean region. Experiences of different speakers coming from both side of the Mediterranean Sea (France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, etc.) and from chambers of agriculture, regional parks and associations promoting tourism and local products will shed light on various strategic questions: How to create synergies between tourism and local products? What local initiatives? How effective? What benefits for the producers? What impact for rural areas? For more information, please see LACTIMED agenda. Series of activities in Alexandria LACTIMED organised the third capacity development cycle between 14 and 18 September 2014 in Alexandria. 25 people were trained on sustainable and effective farming techniques, addressing the quality of rations, the question of nutrition, and assessed how to strengthen the capacity of national/local feed supply or improve veterinary/agricultural services to farmers through public-private partnerships. Finally, a workshop on clusters, including a role-playing involving stakeholder, allowed having a collective reflection on the challenges that could be faced by the dairy clusters launched in the framework of the project. The 18th comparative seminar gathered 23 persons coming from public authorities, universities and SMEs in order to discuss the public policies supporting the dairy chains. A workshop to capitalise on the cluster pilot projects organised on the 19th, allowed partners to exchange experiences and to get a series of recommendations from experts. Finally, the 3rd Steering Committee was held on 20 September, gathering 10 partners which could address, discuss and vote on various issues relating to the project implementation and communication. It was also the occasion to plan the activities for the coming months. Some news from the competition of innovative projects Following the call for proposals launched on the five pilot territories, 50 projects were presented. From September to November 2014, the 38 pre-selected
3 3 sur 6 27/01/ :02 candidates benefit from sessions of training - coaching in order to support them in developing their pre-business plans and preparing the final. Each final will lead to the win of 2 laureates for each territory (10 in total) which will receive a grant of EUR each to implement their project. Sicily: Caciocavallo Palermitano Bizerte and Beja: Rigouta from Beja Caciocavallo Palermitano is a traditionally made cheese from the remarkable milk of Cinisara cows. This breed of cows produces very little quantities of milk that is remarkably fragrant and rich in fat thanks to the typical vegetation of the mountain scrubland around Palermo. The rectangular stretched curd cheeses are aged in cool, natural cellars on wooden shelves. After maturing for a year the Palermitano offers a long-lasting flavour, with hints of citrus, sage and straw, accompanied with a subtle spicy endnote. (Photo: Alberto Peroli) Rigouta from Beja is an artisanal whey cheese made entirely from Sicilo-Sarde sheep milk. The presence of this breed in Tunisia is an illustration of centuries-old exchanges across the Mediterranean. To optimise the production of various cheeses, producers use the whey by-product to make rigouta by adding fresh milk. Rigouta is set in perforated cylindrical pots of 0.6 to 1.5 litres. It is very popular in Tunisia, and and it is also used in many of regional dishes. This distinctive cheese, which can also be made from sheep milk, is very popular. The method for making Rigouta from cow milk has not changed. The technique for transforming sheep milk is passed down from father to son, giving it a strong regional identity. However each producer adds their personal touch and subtle nuances to enhance their own Rigouta. Slow Food - Italy Slow Food hosts EU Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries Slow Food hold an informal meeting of the 28 EU ministers for agriculture and fisheries at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo on 29 September 2014 that included speeches by European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Cioloș, the Italian Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies Maurizio Martina, Slow Food President Carlo Petrini and UNISG Dean Piercarlo Grimaldi. Each European country was represented by a product, with its producer on hand to explain the value and importance of these
4 4 sur 6 27/01/ :02 foods and to outline the social and political problems producers are confronted with in regard to their production and sale.
