Testing & quality in enam Framework : Challenges & Solutions Dr. Pankaj Jaiminy Assistant Vice President Food, Health & Beauty

AGENDA 1. About TÜV SÜD 2. Indian market overview 3. Major challenges 4. Solutions 5. Future linkages Slide 2

TÜV SÜD in numbers: Growing from strength to strength One-stop technical solution provider years of global experience 850 locations worldwide 2,220 24,000 million Euro in global sales revenue 2015 employees worldwide locations in South Asia 17 years of experience in India labs across India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka 2000 employees in South Asia Slide 3

India agricultural production : Total Food grain production in India : million tonnes Rice: million tonnes Wheat: million tonnes Cotton: million bales Pulses: million tonnes Coarse cereals: million tonnes Slide 4

Traditional model Vs enam model Farmer Mandi Trader Wholesale price = Farmer price + trader margin+ warehouse cost Warehouse Farmer/Trader/com mission agent National agriculture market portal (price view) On site quality testing by third party lab Bank collaboration Settlement between buyer & farmer Online entry of commodity Slide 5

NAM: Tradable Quality parameters Currently 250 mandi in 10 states are enrolled in NAM. Approx mandi operates in India. Harmonized quality standards of 69 agricultural produce with specific grading as per tradeable parameters Assaying (quality testing) infrastructure in every market to enable informed bidding by buyers Common tradable quality parameters e.g. Moisture Foreign Matter Other edible grains Damaged grains Weevil led grains Immature and Shrivelled grains Uniformity Slide 6

Major challenges Tradable parameters need skilled manpower. Numerous commodities come to APMC, thus increased dependency on manpower with product based skill set. Time constraints. Eg lot of rice per day at Haryana APMC. Time to test each sample =18(work hrs) 60(min) 60(sec) 4000 = 16 sec Over-rating and under-rating of results need to be calibrated with practical expectations of the market. Infrastructure requirement-physical presence of labs in each APMC. Slide 7

Solutions Process Automation Automation of processes; Barcode system used right from entry to APMC. Equipment Automation Automation for equipment based analysis for faster turnaround time Auto data capture Third party experts Auto data capturing; interface linkage between equipment and enam portal. Experienced service providers needed to execute these complicated processes smoothly in order to build confidence in the quality system. Slide 8

Future linkages Traceability : To farm level to ensure quality. GI Identification and mapping. Good Agricultural Practices: Implemented owing to traceability & transparency Regional hub labs: To test high-end parameters like pesticide residue, nutritional analysis for premium categorization Historical Data: Past history of farm quality could be traced Slide 9

Collaboration needed for much anticipated growth Indian agricultural sector is a growing at a faster pace.. With effective collaboration of all the stakeholders and efficient functioning of the system, we can expect a brighter future for all Slide 10
