Turfgrass Conversion Irrigation System Ryan Lehrter, Josh Mauer, Linda Starowicz

Turf grass Conversion Fescue to Bermuda Benefits of Bermuda Grass - Drought tolerant - Spreading variety of grass doesn t need to be over seeded - Easier control of weeds - Quick recovery time from pet damage - Can be established by seed - Reduced number of mowings per year - Lower water use rate reducing strain on irrigation system - Hybrid varieties are low growing and produce very dense turf canopies - Can be over seeded with winter rye for winter color Page 2

Bermuda Grass Continued Differences with Bermuda over Fescue Aggressive lateral growth requiring more edging (reduced mowing offsets cost) Low shade tolerance will not perform in all areas of the property Goes dormant and turns golden brown in the winter Page 3

Bermuda Conversion Process. Fall 2016 This fall, everything will be seeded with Intermediate rye grass This is shorter rye grass bread specifically for short term use over the winter The rye will give us good cover and color until seeding next spring with Bermuda grass Rye will fade out on its own as temperatures get hot Intermediate Rye Over seeded Bermuda in late winter Page 4

Bermuda Conversion Process. Mid to Late May 2017 Scalp grass down to around an 1 tall See with Sunsport Bermuda grass (hybrid Bermuda) We will not apply any pre-emergent crabgrass control to allow seed to germinate Bermuda takes a full season to grow in not recommended to over seed rye first year. Page 5

Bermuda Conversion Process. Changes to Fertilization Program Bermuda has a different growth cycle than Fescue it needs to be fed during the active growing season Instead of spring and fall fertilizer applications, applications will be made in June, July, and August Winter of 2017 weeds will be controlled and if the grow in is successful pre-emergent weed control products will be applied 2018 winter rye over seeding is an option and agronomics plan will be developed based on whether over seeding is elected or allowing the turf to go dormant for the winter. Page 6

Bermuda Conversion Process. Why Bermuda Grass? Bermuda grass does need a good amount of water during the establishment period but once it is established it can weather the greatest of droughts with little to no water Bermuda is easier to manage with fewer pest issues and the ability to reestablish itself after being damaged from things like pets. Able to withstand pedestrian traffic and lower mowing heights This grass is considered as an awesome turfgrass Dr. Mike Goatley, VT Page 7

Irrigation Status of Irrigation Ongoing wiring issues - Wire breaks continue to be an issue with the system but have reduced in frequency - We still occasionally find wire breaks from where wires were pulled through sleeves or nicked by shovels and left in the ground to corrode until they fail. Page #

Irrigation Mainline Breaks Three types of breaks - Over tightened male threaded adapters no Teflon tape - Water Hammer Breaks fittings not thrust blocked - Pipes not seated all the way into fittings

Irrigation Pumps Status One pump has been replaced and is running the entire system currently The second pump was installed incorrectly preventing the self cleaning screen from operating properly and caused the pump to burn up The third pump hasn t been functional since we started at the Retreat Two new pumps has been approved and will be installed this week or early next week.
