Working in joint venture: Rules and guidelines How to keep the pathogens out (country / farm) - imports protocol - biosecurity protocol. How to eradicate/minimize pathogens (country/farm) - BVD, mycoplasma hyo, salmonella, EHEC. How to improve or sustain the herd immunity - vaccination programs.. - herd health programs Principles in prevention Less pathogen Better immunity
Working in the joint venture: Key message Risk management at farm level Ten commands from 1995 What a single farmer can do. What industry /stakeholders can do. tailored biosecurity measures ETT`s ten commands with catechism Voluntary eradication of some diseases Animal trade Feed hygiene Visitors Rodent control Infection pressure Herd immunity Health monitoring Attitude, joint venture
1. Voluntary actions by stakeholders 2. Working in joint venture 3. Education and training 4. How farmers are committed? 5. How to evaluate effectivity? 6. Future challenges.
Education &training: Awareness of the key messages Start: info tour within foodindustry In may 1995 the WORK really started Salmonella outbreak in feedmill 900 farms suspected! 200 cattlefarms contaminated Real activator and motivator!
E&T: New policy and practises taken by industry and other stakeholders : - Information occasions to farmers - Prevention practises -first by neighbours! - Eradication practices - evening meetings by local Farmers union ETT ra coordinated meetings, sent materials and gave consultation We learned some lessons.. and salmonella was a very good teacher!
E&T: EU-financed projects by rural advisory centers - including presentations concerning current disease situation and biosecurity 2 large eradication projects in swine sector - mycoplasma, dysentery, mange Education project by Finnish Swine Farmers Ass. and ETT in ( ) - 4 tours:4 x 16 occasions, 2 in english : ia ASF - over 3500 partcipants - authorities delegate in every occasion
E &T: By ETT Swine sector: - 2 large tours 2003, Cattle sector: - 2 large tour 2007, Contagious Disease and Prevention Theme -year 2012 Poultry: - The Poultry Health Day, every year together with Finnish Poultry Ass. 2013: 40 presentations of biosecurity 2014: ASF- info occasion for vets, hunters and stakeholders
E&T: Vets Info tour 1995 of ETT (salmonella outbreak!) Separated cattle, swine and poultryday 2002 Consultation given daily Lectures to students in Hki University ia infection epidemiology, animal health Presentations in Finnish Vet. Ass. congress yearly Vet -web info in Swine and Cattle health Database Education tours in (800 vets) together with autorities
1. Voluntary actions by stakeholders: ETT ra 2. Working in joint venture 3. Education and training 4. How farmers are committed? 5. How to evaluate effectivity? 6. Future challenges.
How farmers are committed 1.Quality commitments between farmers and industry - rules (ia. animal trade, feed import) - tightest with meat poultry and swine sector 2. Via group-insurance conditions - biosecurity measures and feed hygiene 3. Via participating in national herd health programs - controlled via Databases - tightest in swine sector ISO Price / animal movements ETT/Sikava - health classification in swinesector 5. Social pressure! - Voluntary actions have became norms
1. Voluntary actions by stakeholders 2. Working in joint venture 3. Education and training 4. How farmers are committed? 5. How to evaluate effectivity 6. Future challenges.
1.Situation : How to evaluate effectivity - number of outbreaks 2013: 10 subcl. cattle salmonella, 15 dysenterycase - new diseases: S.influenza, Scmallenberg, M.bovis, IB - eradication projects BVD eradicated, Mycoplasma hyop. eradicated mange eradicated, dysentery 2. Are imports done under ETT`s control? - 99,5%

How to evaluate effectivity 3.Via database - herds in Herd health programs - animal health visits by vet with standard document - occurrences of disease and symptoms - mortality - situation in eradications - results of control of biosecurity (form in web version 2015) 4. Audits (in swine sector) QS ISO Farmers contacts!! We hear those things through the grapevine
Documented health status in databases: Sikava: 95% of swineherds : 7606 animal health vetvisits in 1900 swineherds Naseva: 55 % of cattleherds -2013: vetvisits in 7200 cattle herds More spesific information from adopted biosecurity measures from farmlevel 2016!
1. Voluntary actions by stakeholders 2. Working in joint venture 3. Education and training 4. How farmers are committed 5. How to evaluate effectivity 6. Future challenges in E&T.
Future challenges in E&T If we look prevention more holistic way: Complicated and intensive production systems Foreing workers and subcontracts New and old diseases / global situation Hobby stakeholders Lack of attitude /different values Economical situation and competition How desicion makers, also authorities, keep themselves aware of practice
Future challenges in E&T 1. Complicated production systems and chains - larger production units/ new tecniques/ new systems as heiferhotels - more contacts/large volumes/higher speed - farmer are more depending on other operators - global production chains (poultry, swine) more sensible for disturbances more unexpected risks E&T wider than on farm level knowledge of the whole picture demand for risk assessment and evaluation
Future challenges in E&T 2. Foreing workers and subcontracts - different culture, language skills risks for misunderstanding - operators from different sectors E&T: new groups needing E&T new persons in E&T with new skills farmers personal skills as manager
Future challenges in E&T 3. New and old diseases - Intensive production exposes to more virulent strains, resistence, affects herd immunity - Climate changes vectorborne diseases - Global situation: role of developing countries China, India, Africa E&T: - how keep up with latest information and studies - constant risk evaluation is needed - focus also to outsiders : ASF
Future challenges in E&T 4. Hobby stakeholders - farms with zoo - backyard production ( poultry) - excotic species or breeds (mangaliza swine) E&T: - risks to bring diseases to production chain - hard to get information and awarenes - which organ carries out E&T?
Future challenges in E&T 5. Lack of attitude or different values - Passive people - People who are ready to take risks - People tired with byrocratic jungle - Alternative production? organic production facts or ideologic fictions E&T: - biosecurity in alternative production
Future challenges in E&T 6. Economical situation and competition - at farmlevel / in whole sector if bad times: decision making based only economical aspects on short terms - ownership: decisionmakers are faraway from practise/farmlevel E&T: - Prevention is better than cure - really? -
Future challenges in E&T 7. Decisionmakers perspective - people deal with tiny piece of chain picture can dissappear contacts to practice are diminishing - How and who priorisizes - What reality matters? - What about responsibility? E&T - Meetings in joint venture to make networks - decision makers also need E&T
Conclusions Working in joint venture together Risk evaluation and assessment needed Everybody in the food chain is aware of the risks and responsible Carrots and sticks: nobody is going to pay if you take risk and fail Information in simple model ;Clear key message
