Overview & Introduction BME 450: Biomedical Engineering Design I
Why do we care about BME design? Unlimited number of potential applications for biomedical engineering design Engineering can be used to solve challenging design problems There is a lot of math and science used You can make a lot of money in design This course is arguably the most important course for BME students Med school: you have a medical device invention to your credit patents Grad school: you learn about clinical research and project management Industry: you get practical training on design process, regulatory matters, and problem-solving reality of an engineering profession
Outline for Today Why do we care about BME design? Quick review: who am I? FUTURE for Team-Based Design in BME Program Potential projects Course layout: proposals needs assessment product development testing Answer your questions!
Quick review: who am I? Originally from Florida B.S. in Engineering Science from University of Florida in 1996 Biomedical Engineer for Computer Motion, Inc. M.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Florida in 2003 and 2006 Postdoc & Engineering Research Associate in Bioengineering at Stanford until 2009 Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering

FUTURE for Team-Based Design in BME Program Purpose NIH Announcement Enhance existing course Target senior undergrads Address innovative and/or ground-breaking development Multidisciplinary training Diversity recruitment Purpose: This FOA, issued by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and the Eunice K. Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), encourages applications from institutions that propose to establish new or to enhance existing team-based design courses in undergraduate Biomedical Engineering departments or programs. This FOA targets undergraduate students at the senior level but may also include junior undergraduates and first-year graduate students. Courses that address innovative and/or groundbreaking development, multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary training, and diversity recruitment are especially encouraged.

Potential Projects Open Wound Irrigation Device. Design an irrigation device with an adjustable pressure system that will effectively irrigate all wounds to protect the wound from infection. (Kaleb) Noninvasive Method to Measure Central Venous Pressure. Design a system using ultrasound and a pressurazible mechanism that will accurately measure a patient s Central Venous Pressure (CVP) to improve healthcare in clinical cardiology and the ICU. (Kaleb) Automatic Syringe. Syringe capable of delivering anesthetic automatically with a given flow rate with built in autoaspirating feature. (Hunter) Disinfectant Sprayer. Device designed to speed up and lessen the tediousness of the preparation of patients before surgery. (Hunter)
Potential Projects Heart Catheter Simulation Kit. Design an apparatus consisting of a large blood vessel and multiple heart models with difficult anatomies to practice performing heart catheter procedures. The heart models can be made from 3D printed molds using CT scans. (Daisy) Attachable Gurney Strap. Design a mechanism that can be attached to gurneys in the emergency room to lift over weight or injured patients into a sitting position. This can be used to check back injuries or listen to the lungs. (Daisy) Transportation System. Design an attachable device that is capable of moving patients between hospital beds without assistance from the nurses. (Evalynn) Diabetic Scale. Design a scale capable of measuring the sensation in diabetic patients feet and providing a percentage of loss or gain of sensation in the feet. (Evalynn)
Potential Projects Quantitative Sleep Deprivation Testing. Design a system to quantitatively measure the level of sleep deprivation of an individual and determine if they are safe or unsafe to drive. (Dylan Sanders) Fall Prevention Device. Design a wearable device that will aid in the prevention of falls and or reduce the injury caused from falls in admitted patients, particularly when moving from sitting to standing, and walking throughout the room. (Dylan Sanders) Breast Needle Biopsy Training Phantom. Design a more life size breast phantom that can be used to train nurses and doctors on how to perform breast needle biopsies. (Branndon) Deep Wound Measurement Device. Design a low tech instrument that can measure the volume of deep wounds. (Branndon)
Potential Projects Titanium Clip Detector. Design a metal detector that is small, hand held, and can detect a titanium clip that is only a few millimeters. (Branndon) Breast Reconstruction Sterile Level. Design a sterile level that can be adjusted to different widths, a lite weight material so that the skin and implants are not displaced for a more accurate reading, and has a reference to check to see if the implants make a uniform cleavage. (Debra) NICU Emergency Transport Harness. Design a new emergency transport restraint system that can be used for newborns of varying sizes, and is sensitive to a premature babies skin. (Debra)
