Developing Encapsulated Terpenes for Preventing and Combating Diseases and Pests in Agriculture John Edmonds Research and Development Manager, Eden Research PLC
Who are we and what do we do? Technology licensing business - royalty revenue through the exploitation of our intellectual property Partner with businesses - experience in their particular market sector to develop and commercialise products Outsource research, development and regulatory functions to sector experts Highest quality data and advice, as and when we need it Unique platform technology (GO-E ) used: To develop highly effective, natural products using essential oils (terpenes highly effective, quick decay) To improve existing synthetic products 1
What are Eden s Markets? Eden sits at the convergence of major emerging technology and market drivers in plant protection and pest control: Bio-pesticides: driven by regulation, product safety concerns, and brand owner and consumer preference Industrial biotechnology: driven by unmet market needs, regulatory compliance, and technology capability Sustainable agriculture driven by consumer and brand owner preference, worker safety, and regulation Beyond agriculture, Eden s technology addresses similar trends in biocides, food ingredients, animal and human health 2
What is the GO-E technology? We own the patents to the GO-E micro-encapsulation technology GO-E is a natural micro-encapsulation system: enables slow release of active substances terpenes and/or synthetic compounds The micro-capsules are derived from yeast cells; a waste product derived from the baking, brewing and bio-ethanol industries. Robust, natural and simple process 3
Terpene based products Well documented biocidal activity but difficult to use commercially due to their inherent volatility GO-E system allows these volatile active substances to be delivered to their target in a controlled manner, over time Using GO-E, Eden and its partners have been able to create a range of natural products with superior efficacy Versatile system with a wide range of markets Terpenes are widely used and diverse low cost, regular supply Yeast cells are a waste product available in significant quantities and at low cost 4
What are the applications for GO-E? The GO-E technology has applications in multiple market sectors including: Agrochemical Animal health Biocides Cosmetics Food Human health pest control in wine, fruit, flower and vegetable industries flea and tick treatments, animal shampoos ant and cockroach killers, mosquito repellent perfumes, skin and hair products food flavourings head-lice, wound-care 5
Progress over the last 12 months Exclusive licence agreements for 3AEY signed with Sipcam and Sumi-Agro covers 3 of the top 5 wine producing countries globally Exclusive Option Agreement signed with Eastman Chemical Company for Eden s nematicide product Patent approvals in Mexico, Canada and South Korea Three new priority patent applications filed covering applications, methods of use and new compositions Expansion of activities with Sumi-Agro related companies First EU approval of 3AEY received in May 2015 with approvals expected in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece within 120 days of the first approval 6
What is next? Extrapolation of the partnership model to new areas such as market development, R&D and IP development Product registration strategy development and execution for new territories Accelerated development of the Co-Encapsulation technology IP expansion Business model optimisation (top line focus) Brand optimisation to drive revenue opportunities
Longer Term Vision Expand beyond plant protection products Animal health, food and beverages, human health and personal care Grow internal resources only where essential (project management, business development) Own registrations and leverage Test business model assumptions (toll manufacture, supply concentrate) to achieve long term top-line growth
Current Work Areas Botrytis and Powdery Mildew Nematodes Beneficials Profile The key focus in recent years has been generating data both in the laboratory and fully replicated field trials for product registrations showing control of Botrytis in Grapes, Powdery Mildew in Vegetable crops and control of free-living nematodes in a range of Fruit and Vegetable crops 9
