1 Level 4 Extended Diploma in Health Studies (Medical Pathway) Overview This is a 120 credit qualification. In addition to providing a sound basis for those seeking a career in the health sector, this course of study is designed to appeal to those learners who are interested in acquiring a more medically oriented qualification or who wish to embark on a career requiring specific knowledge and skills in the medical field. To undertake this course of study, candidates need to be 18+. Candidates must complete all mandatory units with a total value of 120 credits to achieve the qualification. Assessment for this qualification is by a combination of assignment and coursework for each unit depending on the specific requirements laid down for that unit. 3 Biology and Basis of Ecology To develop an understanding of the structure and functions of the different cell organelles, the structure and function of the human genome and basis of medical genetics. Unit level 4 Credit value 15 GLH 90 Unit Grading 1 Understand the structure and functions of the different cell organelles 2 Understand the structure and function of human genome 3 Understand the principles of medical genetics 1.1 Conduct microscopic examination of cellular structures. 1.2 Analyse the functioning of the different cellular organelles in various conditions. 1.3 Analyse the dependence structure-effect of the different cell organelles. 2.1 Analyse the mechanism of mutations origin in the human genome and the influence of environmental factors. 2.2 Analyse the mechanisms of the most frequent hereditary diseases origin. 2.3 Analyse the mechanisms of the most frequent hereditary diseases transmission. 3.1 Analyse the principles of the most frequent hereditary diseases diagnostics. 3.2 Evaluate the principles of the most frequent hereditary diseases treatment. 3.3 Outline and apply the basic methods of medical genetics.
4 Physics and Mathematics To develop an understanding of the physical laws which are the basis of the processes in biological systems, the physical principles of the medical equipment function, the mathematic methods of medical investigations. Unit level 4 Credit value 15 GLH 90 Unit Grading 1 Understand the physical laws defining the biological systems function 2 Understand the physical principles of the medical equipment function 3 Understand the mathematic methods used in medical investigations 1.1 Analyse the origin of haemodynamic phenomena in the human organism. 1.2 Assess the biomechanical processes in the human organism. 1.3 Assess the bioelectrical processes in the human organism. 2.1 Explain the origin of ECG waves and Jugs. 2.2 Analyse the principles of eyesight correction. 2.3 Outline the methods of defense against ionizing radiation. 3.1 Demonstrate the main methods of integration of definite and indefinite integrals. 3.2 Demonstrate the use of differential equations in medical investigations 3.3 Describe and apply the methods of mathematical statistics in scientific investigations.
5 Chemistry To develop an understanding of the structure, chemical properties of biologically active substances and their role in the regulation of vitally important organ (nucleonic acids, heterofunctional aliphatic and aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins). Unit level 4 Credit value 15 GLH 90 Unit Grading 1 Understand the structure, chemical properties of biologically active substances 2 Understand the process of the synthesis of biologically active substances in vivo and in vitro 3 Understand the principles of the synthesis of drugs analogues of natural biologically active substances 1.1 Analyse the chemical properties and the mechanism of the action of biologically active substances. 1.2 Outline the breakdown of biologically active substances in an organism. 1.3 Analyse the dependence structure-effect of biologically active substances. 2.1 Analyse the methods of stimulation and inhibition of the synthesis of biologically active substances in vivo. 2.2 Analyse the principles of the stimulation and inhibition of the synthesis of biologically active substances in vitro. 2.3 Describe and assess the synthesis of specified biologically active substances in vitro. 3.1 Analyse the chemical properties of drugs and explain analogues of natural biologically active substances 3.2 Analyse the metabolites of drug breakdown in urine and plasma. 3.3 Explain how chemical methods can be used for the analysis of the metabolites of drug breakdown in urine and plasma.

7 Medical Computing To develop an understanding the medical information systems and their role in health care system, telemedicine and its advantages. 13 Cultural Studies and History To introduce the learner to the concepts of culture in human experience and the concept of national culture. What culture is, how it develops, how it changes, and how it is transferred in time and space, its power to influence our lives and events, are some of the main topics included. Topics, such as the role of language, art, political ideologies will also be examined.
