1 Palladin Institute of Biochemistry (IBC), Kyiv Technical Area: Biotechnologies, Agricultural Sciences and Medicine; Chemistry Keywords: new methods of production and practical application of biologically active substances for medicine and veterinary as well as biosensors for medicine, industry, agriculture and ecology General Information This Institute, founded in 1925 in Kharkiv as the first biochemical Institute in the former Soviet Union, moved to Kyiv in 1931 and became a part of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. It was directed by its founder, very prominent scientist, Acad. O.V. Palladin, for almost 45 years. During its existence, a number of important discoveries and inventions took place at the Institute. Haemostatic drugs were developed, capable of accelerating the wound adhesive process, that are widely applied in hospital practice even today. The Palladin Institute of Biochemistry (IBC) of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has 9 scientific departments, 5 laboratories, and 3 Research Centers. It now employs about 370 people, with more than a 110 having an equivalent of a PhD or above (Dr.Sc.). Institute s Focus Institute s areas of core competencies include the following: Investigation of the structure, physical and chemical properties and biological functions of complex protein and supramolecular systems. Identifying biochemical mechanisms of metabolism regulation by means of low-molecular substances (peptides, vitamins, coenzymes, metal ions etc.). Studying mechanisms of cell signaling. Among other important areas of research in functional biochemistry are: muscle biochemistry; neurochemistry; biochemistry of nutrition; metabolism regulation; lipid biochemistry; molecular immunology; coenzyme biochemistry; protein structure and functions; enzyme chemistry and biochemistry; molecular biology; medical biochemistry; biochemical kinetics, etc. Valuable Technology Offerings Medical and veterinary diagnostics; Biosensors for medicine, industry, agriculture and ecology; Production and application of biologically active substances; Industrial technology for water soluble preparation of Vitamin D3 complexes for babies and another one for prevention of human osteoporosis; Methods for accessing the status of human hemostasis system; Industrial technologies for virus- and prion-safe proteins made of human blood plasma (clotting factors VIII and IX) for intravascular administration etc. Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer IBC collaborates with international laboratories and institutes: Lab. of Phisyology, Liverpool University, UK; National Oncology Center of Japan, Kashiwa, Japan; Center of Immunologic Investigation, Marcel- Lumini, France; Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology, Warsaw, Poland; Tomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA; Pasteur Institute, Paris, France, and others. The Institute has extensive experience in manufacturing technologies of medicinal preparations, including the following: VICASOL a water-soluble analogue of K3 vitamin accelerating blood clotting. MEDICHRONAL effective anti-alcoholic drug. CALMIVID a composition of D3 vitamin with calcium. MEBIPHON - an anti-cancer agent etc. Contact Details Sergiy V. 2 O. V. PALLADIN INSTITUTE OF BIOCHEMISTRY The Institute, founded in 1925, currently has 363 staff members, including 117 scientific researchers. There are 9 research departments, a department of Scientific and Technical Information and a Biotechnology division with an Information Center, a Center of Analytical Research of the Hemostasis System and an Experimental-Biological Center. The scientific approach is targeted at the following areas: Investigation of structure, physical-chemical properties and biological functions of complex protein and supra-molecular systems. Mechanisms of metabolic regulation by biologically active substances of low-molecular weight (vitamins, coenzymes, peptides, metal ions etc.). Methods of production and practical application of biologically active preparations; medical and veterinary diagnostics and biosensors for medicine, industry and agriculture. The Institute possesses a unique collection of hybridomas with important medical applications, including the diagnosis of hemostasis system and infectious diseases. It also conducts testing for diagnostics of various diseases, chemo- and immunosensors for the environment monitoring, etc. Over the time of Institute s existence, many of its discoveries/developments were successfully transferred into industry, including the following: VICASOL a water-soluble analogue of K3 vitamin accelerating blood clotting. MEDICHRONAL effective anti-alcoholic drug. CALMIVID a composition of D3 vitamin with calcium. 10
