Status and Near-Future Activities for NE-KAMS Development to Support Verification and Validation of Advanced Modeling and Simulation Weiju Ren, Ph.D. Oak Ridge National Laboratory ASME 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium Las Vegas Nevada, May 11-15, 2015
NE-KAMS is an information and tool system designed for simulation code validation activities. NE-KAMS stands for Nuclear Energy-Knowledgebase for Advanced Modeling and Simulation to support: Data processing (DP) and data quality assessment (QA) Verification & validation (V&V) and uncertainty quantification (UQ) Knowledge accumulation and information retrieval Collect, qualify, preserve, format, integrate, and manage all types of data. Serve as a resource for: Technical exchange and collaboration. Enabling credible computational M&S for nuclear energy applications. 2 ASME 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium
Paradigm-shift data management techniques are employed in NE-KAMS development. (1) Conduct anatomical analysis on the specified information domain for knowledgebase architectural design consideration. Delineate fine structures and define basic elements of the information. Conventional data management (superficial) NE-KAMS data management (structural) Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation ToolKit Review Meeting Oak Ridge TN, July 18, 2014, Weiju REN
Paradigm-shift data management techniques are employed in NE-KAMS development. (2) Design virtual containers, each with specific data managing functionalities, for the basic information elements. Store the information elements in various virtual containers that belong to a maneuverable database management system. Enable control and manipulation of individual information elements, and facilitate database-simulation code interoperability. Individual Database Table Subset Folder Record Attribute Data Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation ToolKit Review Meeting Oak Ridge TN, July 18, 2014, Weiju REN
System modularization enables custom design to meet various technical and managerial demands. Quick information collection and fine data processing Data File Warehouse and semantic storage systems Relational Digital Databases and knowledge-based tools Custom structure to visualize workflows Capture V&V and UQ methods and processes Guide user through V&V and UQ standards, requirements, and best practices Web-enabled tools for V&V and UQ activities Enabled piecewise growth Ensure quality of each development step Documentation Qualification Connection Adaptable to funding fluctuations with persistent operation and growth 5 ASME 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium
NE-KAMS is adopted by DOE NE to develop the Nuclear Energy Knowledge and Validation System. The Nuclear Energy Knowledge and Validation Center (NEKVAC) has been initiated recently. NEKVAC will be composed of three committees, Steering, Knowledge Management, and Methods and Standards, respectively. NE-KAMS will be expanded as a core component to support the NEKVAC development and operation. Serve as a central information portal/index to network domestic and international resources for advanced simulation code validation. Provide a framework and tools for benchmarking, data quality assessment, verification & validation, uncertainty quantification, knowledge accumulation and information retrieval. Collaborations from industry, academia, and government stakeholders are highly desired. A detail system implementation plan is currently under development by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. 6 ASME 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium
Acknowledgments This work is sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy under contract DE-AC05-00OR22725 with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, managed by UT-Battelle, LLC. 7 ASME 2015 Verification and Validation Symposium
