ELIXIR European distributed Research Infrastructure for biological research Provide data services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance biological science Participated by major European bioinformatics service providers (~180) and supported by EU member states (21) & EMBL-EBI 2
ELIXIR deliver services through ELIXIR Nodes building on national strengths and priorities ELIXIR: The Norway Node The$Israel$Node$ ELIXIR's Norway Node will provide competence and infrastructure building on key areas for Norway, in particular marine resources and medical research. Challenges related to processing and analysis of data from next-generation sequencing and other high-throughput methods are important both to basic research in these areas, and to the development of new enterprises. The node will also provide training and support toward researchers. Collaborating organisations University of Bergen The coordinating partner of the Elixir Norway node. The main focus is on marine genomics and e-infrastructure. An early deliverable is LiceBase developed in tight collaboration withe the Sea Lice Research Centre. University of Oslo Emphasizes biomedical resource provision an analysis, leveraging public resources in integrative statistical genomics, with secure management of person sensitive data. Norwegian University of Life Sciences comparative fish genomics. Provision of web-based solutions for services, toolboxes, and computational access to these data. Norwegian University of Science and Technology Tools and resources for analysing genome data, with focus on gene regulation, non-protein-coding RNAs and epigenetics, but also bacterial genomics. Handling and analysis of data from human biobanks. University of Tromsø Tools and pipelines for analyzing metagenomic (and genomic) data, with a particular focus on taxonomic classification and bioprospecting (functional and metabolic potential). Marine research The Norwegian ELIXIR Node will provide services and resources toward marine genomics including researchers, government, and industry. The Norwegian Node will off several integrated packages geared towards large-scale analysis of marine genomic and metagenomic data (e.g. fish genomics and marine bioprospecting). This also includes provision of web-based solutions for services, toolboxes, and computational access to reference data provided by the ELIXIR infrastructure. Description Web-address Health and biobanks The Norway Node supports infrastructure for handling and analysis of data for medical research, including human biobanks. Such data may be sensitive, and must be stored with secure access. The node is developing infrastructure for sensitive data. Tools for data analysis are integrated into NeLS, the Norwegian e-infrastructure for life sciences. This provides user-friendly solutions for example for human re-sequencing data and other genome-scale analyses. 15 SAB review The proposed Node services are included in the Node application and reviewed by the ELIXIR SAB The Board approves the Node application upon recommendation by the ELIXIR SAB Submission Based on a template and the Node application, Hub prepares a Service Delivery Plan (SDP) Node & Hub review the SDP and agree on it Approval SDP approved by the ELIXIR Board, signed by the Node and attached as Annex 1 to the Node Collaboration Agreement Monitor Monitor the implementation of the SDP by the Collaboration Oversight Group
Changes Head of Node communicates the needed changes to the ELIXIR Director The Director decides whether the required modifications are minor or major Minor changes Minor changes submitted to the Hub upon approval by the Director and the Head of Node Changes documented and dated Major changes Major changes submitted as a proposal to the ELIXIR SAB for review After SAB approval, process the same as for a new SDP, see above
SDP content Table of Node s services Description of the quality and relevance of the services to the bioinformatics community Description of the internal quality assurance system established by the Node to evaluate services Long-term plans for service life-cycle management Safeguards ensuring that the Node continues to be able to fund and fulfil its obligation to deliver these services Signed by the Director and the Head of Node
Compliant services?
Guidelines Strategy Technologies
Linking services to guidelines Software development recommendations as example
Maximize a chain of cause-effect events Four simple recommendations to improve quality & sustainability of software meaningful, easy to adopt, measurable Source code Project Software Recommendations Best practices Quality & Sustainability Organizations & Projects Developers Training
Maximize a chain of cause-effect events Four simple recommendations to improve quality & sustainability of software High impact Low effort High impact High effort Source code Project Software Recommendations Best practices Quality & Sustainability Organizations & Projects Developers Training
From recommendations to policy 1. Endorsement of recommendations 2. Make recommendations part of policies Projects, Organizations, Funders Policy Recommendations Recommendations - + compliance
Questions
Questions What criteria should services of the EOSC meet in order to be part of the service portfolio? Different kind of services -> different criteria. Not the same a training service than a data service. EOSC to 1.- agree on guidelines, 2.-support & evaluate adoption, 3.- visualize compliance How can certification be organized to ensure that services of the EOSC service portfolio meet a list of community-defined requirements? Certification could rely on agreed community guideline. Guidelines should be practical and demonstrate adoption can be measured. What is needed to ensure alignment of the EOSC with user s needs and enable users to actively participate in service portfolio management? Integrating UX Design methodologies into the implementation of EOSC
Thanks for your attention!
Some thoughts Takes time in a distributed RI to build a service portfolio Need to take into account heterogeneity of our services and service providers ELIXIR model could be a good model for EOSC, specially looking at how ELIXIR selects/recommends services Indicators and quality criteria agreed with service providers & the community Low barrier to engage services Clear guidelines to engage services Define priorities and levels of engagement Driven by strategy and user requirements Support services to comply/adopt guidelines
