Getting the right staff to support and drive these projects is critical to maximising the value from this investment, and SAP certification is the key benchmark for these staff. This is why the key theme for this edition of the SAP Education Solutions Magazine is Certification. There is no shortage of both factual and anecdotal evidence to support this assertion. You will read in our feature article about some of this research, the results of which clearly demonstrate how properly trained and certified staff can have an enormous impact on successful project outcomes, minimising the time to value of your IT projects. You will also see useful information on how to go about certification it is no longer necessary to sit through weeks of classroom training to become certified. We also accept that many organisations would like us to make it easier, and cheaper to get the training they need. With the introduction of Virtual Live Classroom (VLC), you can attend the training you need without any of the associated travel costs. Using this technology also allows us to be more flexible about how we deliver the training if you can t release your team to attend training over a multiple day block, VLC gives us the flexibility to deliver training for you in much smaller units. In one case recently we delivered a course as a series of two hour-long blocks of virtual training over a two week period VLC gives us this flexibility. The initial response of many to the idea of VLC is that it is somehow inferior to normal classroom based training. You will see in this edition the results of some research we conducted on those people who have attended our VLC classes this year, many of whom did so for the first time. 4 The Importance of Certification Invest in your team s certification and reap the rewards SAP skills are currently in short supply and in high demand. After relatively low activity over the last few years, many organisations are now investing in their existing IT systems to improve efficiencies and gain competitive advantage over rivals. Many of these companies insist on hiring only certified SAP professionals, looking to find those individuals who can provide the most impact on organisational performance. In their White Paper titled Skill and Certification: Key to Achieving Technology Value, the analyst firm IDC asserted, that the talent of the IT team is... the critical element of IT organisational performance. Deploying a technology is a complicated, detailed, and involved activity. Vendors and their partners spend weeks, or longer, preparing their staff to properly install a technology within an organisation. After installation, managing or even using a technology or solution without sufficient skills reduces the benefits organisations receive from their technologies. To maximise enterprise readiness to achieve the benefits of systems and technology, an organisation must fully train its workforce. Becoming fully trained may sometimes seem like an unattainable goal. There is always more to know, more to learn, more to experience. Except, with technology, there are bodies of knowledge that, if mastered, provide IT teams with the performance benefits they read about in brochures. They are called certifications. SAP offer 3 different levels of certification: Associate Professional Master (coming in 2012). IT teams in which 50% or more of the team holds relevant certification show 15-17% improvement in capabilities, (see Figure 1). Our research also shows that organisations with high concentrations of certified team members are better able to anticipate problems, implement preventative actions, and work to develop operational improvements than organisations with low concentrations of certified team members because of their familiarity with the capabilities of the deployed technologies. Ultimately this allows highly certified teams to spend a greater portion of their workdays maintaining and improving (20% more) technology solutions. This improvement is consistently seen. IDC s 2007 IT Manager Survey examined team performance in relation to numerous key performance indicators (KPIs) across a range of IT functions, including network administration, security, storage, and end-user support. After compiling the results of over 5,000 team responses, we found a clear and direct correlation between team performance and the percentage of the team that holds certification. The average team performed the aggregate of these KPIs at the 50th performance percentile. Those teams also had, on average, a little less than 40% of the team certified on some relevant technology. When we examined teams with about 50% of the team 4 Solutions Magazine

IDC recommends that IT managers consider their overall performance goals and determine if team performance would increase with additional skills. If team performance is important, IDC recommends that IT managers leverage training and certifying team members as an effective way to increase organisational performance. Key recommendations include the following: Train consistently. System rollouts are exercises in change management. To reap the benefits of any new initiative, management must demonstrate its commitment to the new system and its processes. A consistent message is needed to unify everyone s efforts. Similarly, consistency in the quality of training experiences helps ensure that everyone is on the same page when using the technology. Train practically. IDC s research suggests that e-learning courses and electronic performance support modules offer the benefit of replicating the end user s work setting, providing a consequencefree environment that combines job focus and business process training. Train everyone. Technology-based training is not a panacea for all organisational learning challenges. The goal of a training programme is to ensure that 100% of the target learners are trained to 100% of the required skill. This must take into account new hires, transfers, and promotions. 6 Demystifying Virtual Learning the most common myths In today s world, information is available at our fingertips As such, our methods of learning and retaining knowledge are evolving. We all know the benefits of Virtual Learning; the significant reduction in travel costs and incurred expenses, less time taken out of the workplace and the ability to deliver synchronous content to geographically dispersed audiences. However, for the most part, organisations are still not straying far from traditional classroom training. Virtual Learning still feels a bit too alien. Yet if we scratch beneath the surface of uncertainty around Virtual Learning we can start to uncover some clear benefits. In a recent analysis of SAP Education UK s Virtual Live Classroom events, the majority of respondents who had never attended a Virtual Learning session before described the overall Virtual Live Classroom event they attended as Excellent and stated that they would recommend the Virtual Live Classroom experience to others. So with that in mind, here are some of the most common myths demystified. I can t get a good level of interaction with the instructor and my peers in a virtual learning environment. Overwhelmingly the respondents indicated their VLC was a Very Positive or Positive experience that they would recommend to others. Asked whether their view of VLC had changed, roughly half indicated their view was changed for the positive, and none indicated a negative change of view. Virtual Learning lessons are fully geared up to encourage interaction, both between delegates and delegate to instructor. System demonstrations and practice exercises are undertaken just as they would be in the traditional classroom. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and interact either by using the audio facilities or through using a selection of different interaction tools. Delegates can virtually put their hand up, type a private question directly to the instructor and interact with peer delegates. Delegates can type questions or communicate other needs to the instructor using text chat. If instructors aren t able to answer all questions during the allotted class time, they can save the text chat and respond to questions after class, just like the commonly used Parking lot approach that many 6 Solutions Magazine instructors use in a traditional classroom. Responses to these questions can be viewed instantly. There are also voting features that give instant graphical results. Interaction levels will in no way be compromised in a virtual learning environment. If anything, they will be heightened, as without the usual body language clues instructors get during face-to-face classroom events, they now rely more heavily on targeted questions to ensure delegates are retaining knowledge and following the content. 73% of respondents agreed that the instructor frequently attempted to elicit student interaction and agreed it was easy to follow discussions. The instructors will also ensure sufficient breaks are given to avoid looking at the screen for extended periods of time. It will be difficult not to resist the urge to multi-task without an instructor in front of me. It is a common misconception that people feel they won t be able to resist the urge to multi-task whilst taking part in Virtual Learning. How is this any different from the traditional classroom environment? Traditional instructors struggle with delegates who answer s, texts and phone calls throughout a course. This is really no different in a Virtual Learning situation. The instructor is there to maintain focus so that delegates are learning effectively and not getting distracted by other tasks. Virtual Learning instructors are successfully honing their skills to ensure that all

There are a variety of communication modes available through audio, presentation slides and interactive systems that instructors make the most of. Instructors maximise the use of various signalling tools to draw the eye to important elements on the screen as they are explained. Again, our analysis has shown that the majority of respondents felt comfortable that they were: Able to collaborate with my peers without having to be in the same location, they also largely disagreed with the statement, I did not feel a sense of belonging in the classroom, I felt isolated. From the SAP Education UK analysis, bandwidth issues were not a problem. 76% of respondents positively answered the question, It was easy for me to become skilful in using the virtual classroom. It is now common for people to send s or use chat functionality in social networking sites so delegates find it easy to use this functionality in the Chat pod hindered my interaction Could not talk freely without being face-to-face I had bandwidth problems Virtual Learning environment. Virtual Live Classroom has purposely been designed to be user friendly. It is seamless technology that does not detract from the overall learning experience. Like all technology, this will continue to evolve and improve even more in the near future. The quotes above are just two of the many items of great feedback we have received recently after our virtual training courses. The feedback shows that this delivery method is becoming well established and is being embraced by many of our customers and partners as the ideal way to learn. Indeed, many of our certification courses are now offered as part of the Virtual Live Classroom curriculum, offering even greater flexibility in your progress towards SAP certification. 8 Creating a mobile learning strategy creating our first mobile app As SAP Education, in conjunction with DOOR Consulting Limited, launches its first mobile learning tool, SAP ABAP Debugger Basics, Craig Hiles from DOOR discusses some of the factors that need to be considered before embarking on development of a mobile learning programme. With sales of smart phones recently reported to have accounted for more than half of all mobile sales in Europe, and competition heating up in the tablet market, owning a mobile device of one form or another looks set to become the norm for an increasing number of people. At a time when organisations need to be more focused on learning than ever before, as they strive to compete in the global market place, the rapidly developing mobile technology market has the potential to transform how learning and training materials are developed, delivered and, perhaps most importantly, used. Many of the benefits of using mobile devices in training are both obvious and enticing they offer convenience and flexibility. Mobile learning materials Did you know? can be accessed by busy employees wherever they are and at any time on the way to a meeting or in the dentist s waiting room. Delivery of training via a mobile device can turn a classroom based training course into an interactive tool that can be accessed whenever it is needed. With all the benefits that mobile learning has to offer, it is tempting just to jump in and start building apps, but there are a lot of different factors to consider and if the full potential of mobile devices in learning is to be realised, it s important that organisations think strategically from the outset, otherwise disappointment may lie ahead. An obvious starting point is the different types of devices available iphone? Android? BlackBerry? Tablets? Globally over 35,000 consultants passed certification in 2010, over 12,500 in EMEA alone. The market is constantly developing and learning materials need to be tailored to suit each platform, so that is something that may need to be budgeted for. In some situations, all potential users may have the same kind of device, but where that is not the case, a sensible approach may be to develop and test the learning material in one format, before refining and adapting it for others. This is the approach which SAP Education decided to take with its first mobile learning app, just launched and currently available for the iphone and ipad. This first app from SAP Education UK, SAP ABAP Debugger Basics is one with wide appeal, the ABAP Debugger being an incredibly useful tool for SAP developers and project team members alike. Another important consideration is what elements and kinds of learning are suited to mobile devices and how they fit in an overall learning framework. Many people would argue that mobile learning can only represent one aspect of a broader approach to learning, and that careful thought is needed with respect to where it is best applied, and how it can complement other approaches. Although mobile learning can encompass all the different elements available in e-learning such as text, graphics, video, animation, podcasts and forums, thinking about the way in which people use mobile devices is key to their successful integration into an overall learning programme. The primary focus has to be on the quality of content, the user experience and designing the content to suit the way people will want to access it, all of which were taken into consideration by SAP Education and DOOR Consulting when designing and building the SAP ABAP Debugger Basics app. People are likely to use mobile devices in situations where they may be easily distracted; they are likely to want to be able to dip into the 8 Solutions Magazine

The aim of this app is to equip you with the basic knowledge required to effectively analyse and troubleshoot with the ABAP Debugger tool. The tool was developed by DOOR Consulting Ltd and is available now on the itunes App Store for just Pre-requisites before downloading the app: Familiarity with the SAP system this includes logging on, navigation etc. Familiarity with the ABAP Editor Knowledge of basic ABAP syntax learning material for a short period of time before doing something else, or locate and revise a specific piece of information when they come to apply what they have learned. Therefore mobile learning material needs to be broken down into easily digestible chunks rather than requiring long periods of intense concentration. A simple and uncomplicated approach to design is often best, and this is particularly applicable for mobile devices: it is all too easy to get drawn into what is possible with new technology and lose sight of what is best for the user. To this end, the SAP ABAP Debugger Basics app is broken down into small, manageable chunks, and includes features such as a bookmark function, the ability to create your own notes, a glossary of terms and also a quiz to allow the user to assess their knowledge after using the app in their own time and at their own pace. Even if your strategy focuses on the delivery on one test module in the first instance, it is useful to think of the structure and design in terms of a longer term strategy from the outset. Structure and design should be user friendly, with navigation focusing on the information to be communicated. Keeping to an overall framework that can be repeated will allow further modules to be delivered cost effectively as well as improving usability. The app framework should also be thought through to allow further editions to be created quickly without re-invention each time, thus allowing attention to be focused on the all important content. Clearly then, there are a lot of different factors that need to be considered in developing a mobile learning strategy, and it s going to require a significant commitment of time and resources. In return for that commitment, however, mobile learning offers the potential to revolutionise the way that learning is delivered, to offer a step change in user support and create tools that deliver high quality, engaging and effective learning experiences. 10 BW 7.3 & BI 4.0 Certification Paths and new courses The new certification structure explained With the recent launch of BI 4.0 and BW 7.3, the BW certifications have received a major overhaul. Khalid Jamali, BI Solution Owner at SAP Education, explains the new certification structure. As part of the update to BI 4.0 and BW 7.3, SAP Education has created new role-based certifications for BW so they are aligned with consulting roles. Specifically, three roles have been identified, and there are now separate certifications at associate level for each of these roles: User Role (SAP Certified Application Associate Business Intelligence with SAP BW 7.3 and SAP BI 4.0) Implementation Role (SAP Certified Application Associate Modelling and Data with SAP BW 7.3 & SAP BI 4.0) Technical Role (SAP Certified Application Associate Administration and Operations with SAP BW 7.3 & SAP BI 4.0). SAP have introduced new combined academy tracks addressing multiple roles in an integrated scenario of SAP BW 7.3 and BI 4.0. These academy tracks are described in the following section. Delta BW 7.0 to BW 7.3 DBW73 or Data Services - Platform & Transforms 12 hrs BODS15 Business Intelligence Platform: Admin & Security BOE315 8 hrs User Role If you do not hold an existing BW certification, and would like to become certified in Business Intelligence, the approach is based on the TBI10 (Query Design and Analysis), TBI20 (Web Application Designer & Data Warehousing Fundamentals) and TBI30 (BI Solutions), along with the e-learning titles BW308, BW309, BOX315 and BOW Solutions Magazine If you already hold BW certification at a previous release, you can substitute the TBI10 and TBI20 with the BW 7.3 Delta course DBW73. In this case you would still need to complete the TBI30 course, and the four e-learning titles shown above. The TBI30 course will include topics for BW 7.3 integration scenarios with SAP BusinessObjects tools such as Web Intelligence, Crystal Reports for Enterprise, Analysis, Explorer and Dashboard Design. Implementation Role If you do not hold an existing BW certification, the normal route for the Modelling and Data certification is to attend the TBW10 (Data Warehousing), TBW30 (Modelling and Implementation) and TBW50 (Data Acquisition), followed by the TBW55, and the two e-learning titles BODS15 and BOE315. If you are already certified in earlier versions of BW, the first three

After DBW73, you would still need to attend TBW55, BODS15 and BOE315. The TBW55 course will include a high level overview of SAP BusinessObjects reporting tools and detailed look at the Information Design Tool. Technical Role BW - Operations & Performance TBW60 SAP Business Intelligence Solutions & Authorisations TBW65 As this is a new certification, with no previous equivalent, there is no separate delta path. In order to achieve certification here, we recommend attendance on the TBW10 (Data Business Intelligence Platform: Admin & Security BOE315 8 hrs Business Intelligence Platform: Admin Servers (Win) 12 hrs BOE325 SAP Certified App. Associate - Admin. & Operat. with SAP BW 7.3 & SAP BI 4.0 C_TBW65_73 Warehousing), TBW60 (Operations and Performance) and TBW65 (BI Solutions and Authorisations), along with the e-learning titles BOE315 and BOE325. The TBW65 course will include BW 7.3 Authorisation topics and a high level overview of SAP BusinessObjects tools. These new certification courses and the certification exams themselves will be phased in over the next few months, so keep an eye on our website for the latest news. 12 How to Certify three potential routes Are you unsure of the correct way to learn all you need to know about SAP in order to get certified? Whether you are a beginner to SAP or a more experienced SAP practitioner we have a route for you to follow in order to gain certification. Below we have highlighted three potential routes to certification: SAP Innovations 2010 Certification Packages These certification packages have been specifically designed for people who already have hands-on experience with a particular solution and/or those who want to upgrade their certification to the latest release. They re also ideally suited for consultants who already have an Associate Certification and want to upgrade to a Professional level. Review the materials, listen/watch the e-learning and recorded courses at your own pace over a period of 6 months and register for your exam at a time and place most convenient to you. These packages do not have access to an SAP system and there are no SAP instructors available to assist if you are having issues. However, they are a great way of accessing all the necessary material for an SAP consultant exam at either the Associate or Professional level. E-Academy Packages Do you want to become an SAP Consultant but don t have the time to devote to classroom courses or are you already involved full time on a project but would like to expand your skills during the evenings or a weekend? If so, e-academies could be the answer for you. This supported learning programme delivers comprehensive training in a convenient and cost effective format. With e-academies you will benefit from a flexible learning programme which allows you to learn whenever and wherever you want. You get flexible access to e-learning content, training systems, and help desk support over a 3 or 5 month period. e-academies help students get ready for job related tasks and prepares them for SAP s certification exams. Classroom Training In addition to the above methods, SAP still offer their well respected classroom training courses. On the curriculum pages in this magazine you can see the breadth of courses and certification tracks we have to offer in the UK. Did you know? Over 90% of all SAP internal consultants are certified in their respective field. You may have seen other countries offer academy courses which allow you to take training for four or five consecutive weeks in order to attempt your certification. While we do not offer these types of courses in the UK (with the exception of Business Warehouse) we do offer the short courses that make up these academy tracks which will allow you to complete certification at your own pace. Where possible we schedule these courses in consecutive weeks to allow you to attend your very own academy particularly useful if you are attending from overseas. 14 Using the Training Guide Our training guide has been designed to make it easy for you to find the right course for your SAP classroom training needs simply follow the steps described below. Curriculum maps Our training curriculum maps are designed to help guide you through a logical training path. The best way to use them is to establish where you want to get to and work out what lies along the way. Each map has a key to help you identify the level of the course, plus any prerequisites that course may have. Most of the SAP training curriculum comprises three levels: Curriculum Map Guide Level 1 Course (Yellow) Level 2 Course (Red) Level 3 Course (Blue) Scheduled training dates Our scheduled training dates, prices and locations are detailed in an easy reference table under each curriculum map. SAP training courses are scheduled at different frequencies according to their popularity. However, some courses can be scheduled on demand, so it s always worth checking with us if you don t see a suitable date. SAP Academy & Certification tracks SAP Academy tracks pave the way to becoming a Certified Consultant in the various SAP solutions. To achieve certification, you must pass an exam which will test you on the knowledge gained throughout the training curriculum so you need to follow the path shown to gain the necessary knowledge. Course Title Course Code Course Duration Level 1 Introductory courses These courses provide a beginner s overview of the SAP solution area and provide essential prerequisite knowledge for the more advanced courses. They are designed for attendance by company managers, project managers and project teams. Level 2 Foundation courses These courses introduce you to fundamental business processes that can be modelled using SAP. The courses serve as an introduction to a particular solution component, such as SAP SCM Planning or Manufacturing. While Level 2 courses are primarily designed for project team members, managers can also benefit from a more in-depth look at business processes and functionality. Level 3 Detailed courses These courses focus on providing detailed information about individual application areas, and concentrate on customisation and function descriptions. They usually build on information covered in the corresponding Level 2 courses. Don t forget to make a note of any prerequisites that course may have. Solid lines between courses indicate a mandatory prerequisite, whilst dotted lines show where a course is recommended before taking another.
