Solid Edge is developed by EDS PLM Solutions, the world s leading provider of core technology and standards for PLM. EDS PLM Solutions owns and develops Parasolid the Solid Edge modeling kernel and, at a million seats, the de-facto standard for 3D mechanical CAD. Our competitors have confused kernel strategies that make their future directions unclear. Inventor is switching to an unproven technology, its own kernel which is based on a frozen version of ACIS. Despite the obvious message that ACIS is inadequate for Inventor s needs, the success of this move remains questionable. AutoDesk has never written anything as demanding as a solid modeling kernel and the technical superiority of Parasolid over ACIS is a good indicator of the time and investment required. The inferiority of ACIS is largely due to it not receiving the level of investment that Parasolid has enjoyed over the past 10 years. SolidWorks still favors the stability of EDS Parasolid over the core technology of their parent company. This despite the fact that Dassault purchased ACIS, clearly with an eye to improving it and using it in their own products. The AutoDesk decision speaks volumes about Dassault s ability to improve ACIS to the level of Parasolid. Although AutoDesk has written some good surfacing code, it has never written a competitive solids package. SolidWorks customers should expect a painful transition to ACIS. SolidWorks is destined to switch to it someday. Michael Payne, a former Solid Works executive, runs the ACIS business and has invested millions of dollars in the purchase. The clear goal has to be to use it in SolidWorks. In direct comparison to these precarious strategies, EDS has a clear and consistent development strategy for all PLM products, including Solid Edge.
