1 Concrete What is Concrete? Concrete is perhaps the most versatile of all constrction materials. In its freshly mixed condition it can be pored, pmped and molded into a variety of forms and shapes, while in its hardened state it can be sed for many constrction prposes. The qality of concrete is crcial if strctres are to be safe and serve the prpose for which they were designed. Or concrete testing eqipment gives yo the ability to measre and prove the qality of each batch of material, so that yo can ensre the correct application of the key raw materials. Cement 34 Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing 35 Non-Destrctive Testing of Hardened Concrete 36 Compression Machines 37 Compression Machine Accessories Cement is a man-made material and can be spplied in many forms, with different cements having specific and often varied properties, sch as rapid hardening, slphate resistance and low heat. The precise cement content for different batches of concrete will normally be specificed at the time of manfactre; typically, concrete has a cement content of abot 250 kg/m 3. Sections 38 and 39 describe test eqipment specifically designed for the testing of cement. Aggregate By far the greatest proportion by volme of concrete is made p of aggregate. This can be natrally occrring, sch as river gravels, or crshed rock from qarrying operations; other materials can also be sbstitted for aggregate inclding colliery waste and recycled concrete. Normally, coarse and fine aggregates are sed in the proportions of approximately 70:30. Section 42 describes test eqipment sitable for the testing of concrete aggregates. Water Water reacts with cement and allows the necessary hydration and hardening process to proceed. The qality of water is not generally critical providing it is clean and free from imprities and high silt content. The qantity of water added does, however, have a major effect on the qality and strength of the concrete. Test eqipment designed to determine the effect of water on fresh concrete is described in Section For 24/7 online ordering, payment & order tracking go to

2 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Sampling, Consistency and Workability The correct sampling and mixing of fresh concrete is important if test reslts are to be reliable. Most of the eqipment necessary for efficient sampling and mixing is standard laboratory eqipment detailed in the Laboratory Eqipment section of this cataloge. To ensre that concrete achieves its maximm possible strength and yet retains its ease of placing on site, it is essential that the design of the concrete mix, in relation to the water-cement ratio and workability, is closely controlled. Slmp Test EN ; ASTM C143; AASHTO T119 Accessory Scoop see EL K-slmp Tester Developed to determine the workability of fresh concrete and the degree of concrete compaction placed in formwork. The apparats can be sed for in-place measrements of concrete in test molds and forms and may be correlated to the standard slmp test. It is simple, economical to se and redces testing time. No special calibration is reqired. EL K-slmp Tester. Weight 450 g. Test is appropriate for concrete mixes of medim and high workability The test is carried ot by filling the slmp cone with freshly mixed concrete, which is tamped with a steel rod in three layers. 3 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Vebe Time BS EN Test appropriate for concrete mixes of low and very low workability This method is a mechanised variation of the slmp test and incldes a determination of the workability of concrete. It is based on the principle of sbjecting the concrete to vibration after removal of the slmp cone. The assembly is monted pon a small vibrating table operating at a fixed amplitde and freqency. The time to complete the reqired vibration gives an indication of the concrete workability. Special Note: The consistometer mst be operated from an electrical spply of 50 Hz in order to comply with the fixed test freqency specified. Flow Table BS EN Test appropriate for concrete mixes of high and very high workability This test will be of interest to those involved with concrete having a high workability. The test determines the flow index as an arithmetic mean of the diameter of the specimen after working on a flow table. The apparats consists of a mold, flow table, wooden tamper, metre rle and a float. EL Apparats for Determining Flow in Concrete comprising mold, flow table, tamper, metre rle, float and stopwatch. Setting Time by Penetration Resistance ASTM C403; AASHTO T197 This method covers the determination of setting time of the mortar fraction of concrete mixes and is only sitable on mortars with slmp vales greater than zero. The definition of the initial and final setting time is taken as the period from when water was first added to the mix ntil the measred penetration resistance is 500 lbf/in 2 and 4000 lbf/in 2 respectively. 4 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Air Entrainment The determination of air content of freshly made concrete is detailed in EN and ASTM C236, where the importance of two main applications is highlighted. The primary prpose of entraining air in concrete is to give the reqired resistance to weathering. The se of chemical additives to increase the workability of concrete often reqires an air content check to be made. 5 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Mixing Eqipment The efficient mixing of concrete prior to molding specimens in the laboratory for sbseqent testing is essential if qality specimens are to be manfactred. The object of mixing is to coat the srface of all aggregate particles with cement paste, and bring the mix to a niform condition. Pan or rotating drm mixers are sitable for the mixing of small qantities of concrete, which are generally sed in a laboratory. 7 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Compaction The strength, drability and finish of concrete rely in part on the adeqate compaction of the mix. An increasing nmber of contract specifications call for varios forms of vibro-compacted concrete as a means to achieve a better and more consistent mixtre. It shold however be remembered that flid mixes may segregate when vibrated in which case it may be more appropriate to compact sing a tamping bar or rod dring laboratory mix design. 8 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Cring of Specimens The correct environment for cring concrete test specimens is important to achieve consistent and reprodcible test reslts. Two primary factors mst be taken into consideration to satisfy the reqirements, namely to maintain a stable temperatre and to prevent loss of moistre from the specimen. A standard cring temperatre of 20ºC is sally specified and shold be maintained at the reqired degree of accracy. The se of water to prevent loss of moistre is the method most commonly sed. In tropical climates a cring temperatre of 25ºC is often acceptable. 9 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Capping of Cylinders When condcting a compressive strength test on a concrete cylinder it is important that the ends of the specimen are flat and parallel to each other. The trowelled face of a prepared concrete cylinder, or both ends of a concrete core, will reqire treatment to obtain these conditions. Slphr Compond Method EN The slphr compond method is a hot process and offers a considerable saving in time and labor over the mortar capping method. The method is virtally instant and the compond can often be recovered for frther se. Warning: The slphr compond, when hot, will give off slphr fmes, and therefore it is important that good ventilation, or preferably a fme cpboard, is available in the laboratory. 10 34 Concrete - Fresh and Hardened Concrete Testing Density of Fresh and Hardened Concrete The density of both fresh and hardened concrete is of interest to the engineer for nmeros reasons inclding its effect on drability, strength and resistance to permeability. Hardened concrete density is determined either by simple dimensional checks, followed by weighing and calclation, or by weight in air/water boyancy methods. Density of Hardened Concrete EN , The density of hardened concrete specimens sch as cbes and cylinders can be qickly and accrately determined sing a Boyancy Balance. 27 37 Concrete - Flexral and Transverse Machines and Accessories Flexral and Transverse Testing Machines and Accessories The flexral and transverse strength of concrete is of interest to engineers for many reasons. Movement of strctres which may be indced by e.g. temperatre changes, grond vibrations, cyclic loading of road pavements and many other external inflences, will set p internal stresses within a concrete member. There is no clearly defined relationship between compressive and flexral strength. Generally it can be assmed for most prposes that flexral strength of normal concrete is abot 10% of the compressive strength achieved in the same concrete. Modern concrete technology tilises a wide range of materials sch as glass or steel fibres to improve the flexral strength of the concrete. These modified concretes often reqire the se of special tests and eqipment. Lower loads are sed to test concrete in flexre; however, the shape and size of test specimens is sch that larger and often heavy specimens can be difficlt to handle. ELE has designed the range of machines offered to provide for ease of specimen positioning and sbseqent testing. The range of flexral test eqipment offered provides a wide variety of choice and test methods inclding low strength compression tests sing optional ball seating assemblies. 85 For 24/7 online ordering, payment & order tracking go to
