1 Tech News A TECHNICAL ROOFING PUBLICATION BY VERSICO ROOFING SYSTEMS WINTER 2016 In This Issue Ice Melts and Their Potential Effects on Roof Components Ice Melts and Their Potential Effects on Roof Components Winter Safety Tips for Roofers 2016 Authorized Contractor Training Seminars DASH Dual Tank Adhesive: Arrival to Application Q&A From the Field Featured Detail VGC D Details Preventing Moisture Damage Preventing Air Infi ltration Ice melts that contain potash, urea, calcium chloride, and/or sodium chloride (common table salt) are safe to use with Versico's VersiGard EPDM, VersiWeld TPO, and VersiFlex PVC membranes, as well as exposed VapAir Seal 725TR. Be cautious if using ice melts on or around metal roof components! Ice melts will discolor copper, corrode and pit aluminum, and accelerate the oxidation (rusting) of non-stainless steel. It is the owner s responsibility to take appropriate precautions to protect metal components. Exercise extreme caution when removing snow or ice from any roof, as the roof s surface will be extremely slippery. If adhering new insulation directly to the surface of 725TR, make sure there is not excessive residue left behind from the ice melt products. The surface of the 725TR should be clean and dry when adhering the insulation. Use a garden hose to spray off any excessive residue left over from ice melt products.
2 Winter SAFETY TIPS for Roofers Dress properly for the weather conditions. Be aware of wind chill factors when the temperature is low. Try to schedule work for the warmest part of the day. Avoid exhaustion or fatigue: energy is needed to keep muscles warm. Drink warm, sweet beverages and avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas, or hot chocolate). Eat warm, high-calorie foods. Be aware of skylight and hatch openings that may be covered by snow. Check the architectural roof plans for the types and locations of any penetrations. Be aware of your position on the roof with respect to perimeters and other roof levels. Check for icy surfaces that may be hidden by snow, and check each roof level for ice. Exercise caution when climbing ladders; be sure to check for iced rungs. In colder weather, white membranes reflect heat and can promote slippery conditions due to ice and frost buildup that may not be visible. Exercise caution to prevent falls Authorized Contractor Training Seminars VersiGard EPDM, VersiWeld TPO, and VersiFlex PVC Seminars This two-and-a-half day seminar is designed to acquaint attendees with various Versico roofi ng products and systems. 3 DASH Dual Tank Adhesive: Arrival to Application Spray gloves, long sleeves, and protective glasses must be worn during setup and dispensing. When you order Versico's DASH Dual Tank Adhesive, you will receive two box types: part A and part B. The box marked part A will contain a cylinder of the A-side material, as well as the tools you will need to apply the product, including: Two twenty-foot lengths of hose, connected to a gun at one end. 8 gun tips. A sealed package of petroleum jelly. A small wrench. A copy of the operating instructions. The part B box will contain a cylinder of the B-side material. First, use the enclosed wrench to connect and tighten the A- and B-side cylinders to their respective hoses. Next, apply a generous amount of petroleum jelly to the face of the dispensing unit. This will help to prevent contamination and keep the sealing ports clean. After that, place a tip onto the end of the gun and open both tank valves. Please note: it is important to shake each side of the kit before use. When using the dispensing unit for the first time, and with each new kit, we recommend triggering the gun only ½ to ¾ of the way open until the desired output and spray pattern are achieved. This controllable metering is a major benefit of the dispensing unit because it gives the user complete control of the flow rate and spray pattern. Once the trigger is released it MUST BE REACTIVATED WITHIN 30 SECONDS or a new nozzle will need to be installed. Failure to do this could result in chemical leakage, spills, or splashes which can ruin the dispensing unit and hoses. When you re fi nished using the material, storage is quick and simple. Note: Do not store this material at temperatures above 100 F or below 50 F. If kits are stored below 75 F, they must be given suffi cient time to warm up prior to use. Begin by closing the tank valves. During storage, the used nozzle should be left on the dispensing unit in order to help keep the outlet ports clean 3 and free of any dust, dirt, or chemicals. ALWAYS engage the trigger safety and close all supply valves before storing this material. Do not remove the hoses from the tanks, and do not fl ush or clean hoses with air, water, or solvents, as this will compromise the foam. When re-using the dispensing unit after it has been in storage, remove the used nozzle before disengaging the trigger safety. Next, check the face of the dispensing unit to make sure the outlet ports are clear and the face of the unit is free from dirt, chemicals, or other debris. If necessary, use a soft cloth or rag to remove any cured foam or chemicals from the face of the dispensing unit. Attach a new or cleaned nozzle to the dispensing unit. Remember to shake kits before use.
4 Q&A From the Field Does the new EPDM dunnage policy apply to PVC and TPO rolls as well? Yes, the dunnage policy is as follows for EPDM rolls: 2 dunnage supports for rolls less than 10'. 3 dunnage supports for 10' to 12' rolls. 4 dunnage supports for rolls greater than 12' Can nails be used for the securement of wood nailers? No. Wood nailer fastening methods vary with building conditions. The Perimeter Flashing section of FM Global Loss Prevention Data Bulletin 1-49 contains options for fastener size and spacing that are based on the wind zone in which the project is located. What primer should be used when applying VapAir Seal MD to walls? 702, 702LV, and CAV-GRIP are all acceptable primers for wall applications of VapAir Seal MD. On EPDM systems, what is the proper repair procedure if Lap Sealant is missing? Clean the splice edge with Weathered Membrane Cleaner, then apply and feather Lap Sealant. Reminder: APPLICATION OF LAP SEALANT SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE WORK DAY. Delaying application (not within the same day) will require scrubbing off accumulated dirt and dust along the splice edge, rinsing with clean water, and cleaning with Weathered Membrane Cleaner or EPDM Primer. Note: If weather is threatening, Lap Sealant may be applied to adhesive splices without waiting; however, splice area must be checked the following day for fi shmouths or evidence of solvent entrapment (bubbled Lap Sealant). Refer to Paragraph E Splice Repairs for corrective procedures. On fleece backed systems, how can telegraphing of the adhesive through the membrane be avoided? Using Flexible DASH Adhesive helps mitigate the visual effects of telegraphing because it has more cushion and give than standard urethanes. Because it isn t as hard and rigid, is fl attens out and any lines are less pronounced. In addition to the use of fl exible adhesive, there are a number of other ways to limit telegraphing: check for string time (when you touch the adhesive and see it transfer between your fi ngers), use tighter bead spacing, and use a 150-lb weighted roller to seal the membrane and fl atten the bead. Note: it is always recommended to use a weighted roller because it helps mate the membrane to the insulation, but in this case, it also helps to limit telegraphing. What is Versico s recommended procedure for repairing any cold welds or wrinkles that may occur when installing a TPO system? Clean the affected area with Weathered Membrane Cleaner. Hot-air weld the open seam per detail. If necessary, install TPO membrane surface splice extending 1½" to 2" past any cut or open areas as per detail. Probe the welded edges once they have cooled. 4
5 Featured Detail: When installing a roofi ng system, attention to the details is key. In the following detail, the use of termination bar and terminating membrane is outlined in Versico s standard Detail VGC-9.0. The appropriate usage is determined by the duration of warranty that is required: Up to 10-year warranty: Detail VGC-9.3 is appropriate. If no reglet counterfl ashing is present as in the picture, use VGC-9.4. When using VGC- 9.4, Water Cut-Off Mastic (WCOM) must be used behind the membrane with termination based enough to keep constant compression. 15- and 20-year warranties: Detail VGC-9.4 is appropriate. If reglet counterfl ashing is present, VGC-9.1 must be used or if removal of the reglet counterfl ashing is allowed, VGC-9.4 is required. WCOM must be used behind the membrane with termination based enough to keep constant compression. 25- and 30-year warranties: Only VGC-9.1 can be used. WCOM must be used behind the membrane with termination based enough to keep constant compression. In all cases, if the contractor will be covering an entire wall with Versico membrane, VGC-9.2 is the appropriate detail. VGC-9.0 Termination Requirements Remember: No termination is allowed through exposed wood or exterior insulation and fi nish systems (EIFS). Termination bar must not be bent around corners, and must be cut and fastened. On continuous runs of termination bar, ¼" to ½" gapping is required. Do not continuously run termination bar over wall expansions. Follow Detail VGC-9.5. The parapet wall being terminated to must have a smooth surface. 6 NEW! 3-D Details Preventing Moisture Damage Versico is proud to announce the debut of 3-D details. These step-by-step animated installation instructions cover some of the most common roofi ng details encountered in EPDM, TPO, and PVC roofi ng systems. Visit to learn more. VGC-1.1A Versico Drip Edge Fascia VGC-5.2 Quick- Applied Curb Wrap While occupancy-generated moisture is usually addressed through the use of a vapor barrier, construction-generated moisture can be reduced through a number of techniques. Sealing gaps between the structural deck and walls, as well as gaps around penetrations and at steel deck end laps, is critical. Using multiple layers of insulation, installed with the joints staggered, can provide an additional barrier against air infi ltration and reduce moisture concentration in the roofi ng assembly. Construction-generated moisture may also be reduced by careful project scheduling (coordinating roofi ng installations with the concrete pour schedule) and building dehumidifi cation prior to occupancy. Refer to Spec Supplement G Construction- Generated Moisture. Preventing Air Infi ltration VGMA-8.2 Field Fabricated Pipe Seal On structural concrete decks, it is important to seal any gaps between the structural deck and walls and those around penetrations. Unsealed gaps allow hot humid air from within the building to infi ltrate the roofi ng assembly and possibly condense during cold weather. The same phenomenon can also occur on steel decks where gaps are not sealed or vapor barriers are not used. Refer to Spec Supplement G Construction-Generated Moisture, for more recommendations on preventing air infi ltration.
