Asphalt is being delivered and laid by a paver. But the operators and official representatives are in a euphoric mood. The road quality being produced by the SUPER , the ultimate in pavers from VÖGELE, is so impressive that even hard-core professionals are stunned. 3 The VÖGELE flagship advanced continuously at a rate of almost 4m/min. on this day in October The machine was preceded by a bustle of activity, for no fewer than 24 feed lorries were needed to ensure an uninterrupted supply of mix to the paver, which placed a perfectly even asphalt surfacing without joints, up to 12m wide and that is only threequarters of its maximum pave width of 16m. The specialists on site were, rightly, delighted with the machine s performance. Frauenrath Bauunternehmen GmbH from Heinsberg had won the contract for construction of this 4.4km long new stretch of the B 56 federal highway in a consortium with Lambert Schlun GmbH & Co. KG from nearby Gangelt. Base and binder courses were paved by a SUPER and SUPER Hot to hot paving was originally specified for the wearing course, but Frauenrath s site planning engineers had other ideas, as Toni Oellers, their Technical Manager Service & Logistics, reports: We had heard of the SUPER s advantages and were sure that with this machine we could pave a perfect wearing course without joints. The idea convinced the highway authority engineers, Lower Rhine Regional Office, and they agreed to the change. 5 Seite 4/8 Use of a feeder is advisable The paver was complemented by a MT 1000 Mobile Feeder. The feeder is strongly recommended when working with the SUPER , explains Sales Manager Dirk Thelen for WIRTGEN Windhagen. The large quantities of mix laid by the SUPER up to 1,600 tonnes per hour are best transferred by a feeder. Since the feeder stocks a sufficient quantity of mix, paving can continue for several hours without a single break even when feed lorries only deliver fresh material intermittently. In Selfkant, too, the paver remained in operation for many hours before stopping for the first time. But the feeder has even more aces up its sleeve. The most important point is the mechanical separation between paver and feeder, which ensures that the mix is transferred smoothly a crucial advantage in terms of quality, as the finished asphalt pavement shows. Whether with or without a feeder using such a large paver calls for good organization. Jürgen Thebrath, Frauenrath s Site Manger for asphalt, had therefore taken appropriate precautions: This job site is served by 24 feed lorries with a turnaround time of one hour, so they return fairly quickly. In addition, we have signed a contractual agreement with the asphalt mixing plant ensuring that the asphalt is delivered without a break. 03 // 03 // The bustle of activity ahead of the feeder and paver: 24 feed lorries were needed to supply the XXL pair with sufficient mix.

6 Seite 5/8 Optimum coordination Two service technicians from the WIRTGEN Group were standing by when Frauenrath first tried its hand with the SUPER Frank Wego from WIRTGEN Windhagen assisted the men during their first hours with the MT 1000 Mobile Feeder. André Felchner, Applications Technology Manager at VÖGELE, briefed the operators on the most important points to watch during paving: With this wide screed, the screed operators must always keep an eye on the constant supply of mix. The speed of the augers and conveyors must be perfectly matched to optimize the paving process and achieve the best possible surface accuracy. 04 // Managing Director Jörg Frauenrath and Site Manager Jürgen Thebrath are convinced: This joint-free quality is simply outstanding. 04 // When working with the SB FixedWidth Screed, the hydraulic extensions of 75cm on either side create flexibility and allow hydraulic screed width control by a total of 1.5m.

7 Seite 6/8 Ease of operation finds high favour The project was paver operator Wilfried Wild s first encounter with the world s biggest tracked paver. He has worked in road construction for over 20 years and is a confirmed fan of VÖGELE. Yet even he was stunned by the SUPER : This giant machine is every bit as easy to control as the smaller pavers from VÖGELE. And the ErgoPlus operating concept is simply brilliant. Frauenrath Bauunternehmen GmbH 05// 05 // With the SB Fixed-Width Screed, the wearing course of the B 56 federal highway was paved in a single pass in widths between 11.6m and 12.5m.

8 Seite 7/8 Even the screed operators found it easy to adapt to the machine. The SB Fixed-Width Screed, specially developed for the SUPER , is operated according to the same principles as the AB Extending Screed on the SUPER , with which the men normally work. In Selfkant, the SB was built up with bolt-on extensions from the basic width of 3m to a pave width of 11m. Hydraulic extensions on the right and left provided the flexibility needed to place the road s wearing course in widths between 11.6m and 12.5m. With this concept, VÖGELE have ideally combined the advantages of a fixed-width screed with those of an extending screed. Thanks to ErgoPlus, the SB was just as easy to operate as the AB normally used by the paving team. 07 // 07 // The SUPER was the highlight of this successful project. 9 Seite 8/8 Large paver draws a crowd The SUPER was in action in Selfkant for two days. During this time, colleagues from Frauenrath, members of staff from nearby construction firms and specialists from the highways authority leapt at the chance to see the paver in action. And of course the XXL paver s performance was also scrutinized by Frauenrath s management. The technology is outstanding and ingenious, said the company s junior boss Jörg Frauenrath enthusiastically, adding with a grin: When the customer sees this pavement without joints, he ll be demanding this quality all the time in future... Frauenrath s workshop team used their lunch break to watch the SUPER in action. The height of the augers adjusts hydraulically by up to 20cm across the entire pave width while paving. The large diameter of the auger blades (480mm) prevents segregation of mix in front of the screed.
