1 Tiles on a roof terrace WARCO tiles do not have to be glued or fixed to the floor. You just simply lay the tiles on a roof terrace covered with roofing foil, felt or bitumen sheets. In case of you just experienced the cheap tiles on the roof. In bituminous sheeting or EPDM roofing foil separation layer is not even necessary. The subfloor roof foil, felt, sealing foil or bituminous sheeting As a rule, roofing membranes, traditional bitumen sheets or modern plastic waterproofing membranes are suitable as a base for the laying of elastic WARCO floors. WARCO tiles can be simply laid directly on the existing sealing in most cases. However, there are significant differences in quality and characteristics between various materials that are used as a base components in the production of roofing foil.this should be considered when laying the WARCO flooring. For a refitting of a flat roof, terrace or a balcony, WARCO recommends the use of EPDM waterproof sheeting. Compared to other competitive products such as bitumen membrane (which is non-diffusive, has got a short life-span and

2 is prone to frequent reparations) or PVC roofing membrane (occurring plasticiser problem, embrittlement) EPDM roofing membranes is clearly superior due to its favourable mechanical and physical properties. EPDM membranes are particularly practical because they are produced on rolls up to 15 m wide, so no fusing of individual sheets is required on many balconies and terraces. Certainly, the lack of seams in the roof sheeting reduces the risk of leakage of the roof sealing. Separating layer on a plastic foil Roofing membranes made of polymer material, such as PVC, FPO, EVA, are increasingly being used as roofing foil or sealing on balconies. These plastic sheets contain plasticisers. In order to avoid the migration of those elements from the roof sheeting onto WARCO terrace flooring (which might become brittle as a result of this), a suitable separating layer should be placed on the roof sheeting. When an existing roof membrane is made of certain materials (e.g., FPO, PVC) a separation layer should be laid on the roof sealing before installing WARCO tiles in order to prevent direct contact between the roof sealing and WARCO

3 flooring. Thus, i.e., in case of a roofing membranes made of PVC, the migration of the plasticiser between the roof foil and the WARCO tiles is going to be prevented.. Installation of the balcony flooring on a separating layer The balcony flooring by WARCO, so the easily installed interconnecting tiles may be placed directly on top of the separating layer. It is useful in case of roof foil made of polymer plastic if we want to prevent a possible migration of harmful plasticiser from the roof sheeting onto the installed flooring. Safety mats, patio tiles and balcony flooring made by WARCO are permeable to water. On the underside of the tiles, an interconnected network of drainage channels is formed. Water seeps through liquid-permeable tiles and runs through their drainage grooves, following the incline, onto the roof sealing a water-bearing base course.

4 Terrace tiles with a built-in drainage During their production, a smart system of drainage channels is integrated into the underside of WARCO tiles. The channels connect with each other by the tiles installed in the chequered patten to form a cohesive drainage network and allow good water flow. Before laying of the WARCO tiles, we should check and make sure if the unobstructed water flow on the roof sealing occurs. Puddles in the form of standing water staying permanently on the surface with a water depth 3 mm should be avoided; WARCO flooring should not remain in water on permanent basis. In freezing weather, due to the expansion of freezing water (about 9%) puddles with the depth 3 mm may cause the expansion of the tiles. During thaw, the expansion effect may disappear, however, reinstallation work might be necessary.

5 Refitted balcony; rubber flooring on a foil Renovation of this balcony was carried out in several steps. On the concrete flooring with an incline starting from the wall, an EPDM membrane was laid. By the wall, the foil was pulled by a few inches and then, clamped. Only then, WARCO terrace flooring with a tongue and groove connection system was assembled directly on the roof membrane. In order to check if our subfloor is even and there is appropriate draining, we may simply empty a bucket (or more) of water on the surface. Bumps or indentations in the area can be filled up easily; we may simply insert cut-out pieces of roofing sealing in the deeper areas. Finally, by means of a levelling bar, we may quickly check the effectiveness of our work. If you are satisfied with the evenness of the surface and the water drainage functions properly, you can quickly install your purchased safety mats, terrace or balcony flooring. 6 Roofing felt Evening out of irregularities on the roof felt The sealing of a flat roof or roof terrace is often carried out with the use of bituminous roofing membranes, roofing felt or foil. The individual strips are laid in an overlapping manner; they are also welded with each other and with a subfloor by means of a gas burner. Unfortunately, such a surface is not even,but has slight irregularities which are higher at the overlapping parts, and lower in the spaces between them. The unevenness should be levelled so that no puddles occur on the surface. This may be easily done by placing precisely cut-out pieces of the bituminous sheeting between the irregularities in the surface. Balcony renovation

7 Stages of a balcony refitting A bit of DIY skill and know how shows that the renovation of a balcony is not a rocket science. It has been proven that we may cover our roof terrace with an EPDM membrane, which is available in many formats from 1 to 15 m wide. The sheeting can be laid on a balcony or terrace where water can flow and no puddles remain on the surface. The membrane is not welded to the subfloor. and WARCO flooring may be placed directly on top of the EPDM foil. During the installation, the tiles are joined with each other through a stable connection system, preventing them to slide or change their position after the assembly. Roof terrace

8 Summer house terrace on the beach With a balcony renovation, and of course during the construction of a new balcony or a roof terrace WARCO recommends the use of EPDM roofing membranes. The durable and high quality roof covering is available in formats up to 15 x 60 m so that in most cases, it is possible to lay a seamless foil, similar to a fitted sheeting. WARCO tiles are assembled directly on the EPDM membrane (without gluing). The WARCO tiles with a tongue and groove system are joined easily through a formfit connection which prevents shifting. 9 Covering your balcony with a foil Covering of a terrace or a balcony flooring with a foil placed under the terrace flooring is a perfect solution to protect the installed structure from moisture. It is also particularly advantageous that the roof sheeting is not glued to the base course (flooring), therefore the sheeting layer is not mechanically fixed to the subfloor. WARCO tiles may be assembled directly on the foil (in case of PVC or FPO we would need a separating layer). Make sure that the water flow is secured and no puddles (deeper than 3 mm) remain on the surface. Roofing foil

10 Roof terrace rom a distant view The view from the roof terrace of this penthouse near the lake in Switzerland is simply phenomenal. To keep up with the elevated atmosphere of this site, the building's owner decided on WARCO terrace tiles. The sealing of the roof terrace was carried out with Alwitra roofing membranes made of PVC. As a protection against a migration of plasticiser from the PVC foil onto the WARCO flooring, a separating layer between roofing sheets and the installed tiles had to be laid.
