Independent Addition of new column/beam members: Independent Addition of new column/beam members: Calculated floor and roof loads Floors LL (psf) 150 DL (psf) 97 Roof Sized WShapes on 1 st 4 th floors with SAP 2000 software Independent Independent Addition of new column/beam members: Columns Beams TOTAL Steel (tons) tons tons tons Material Cost ($) $12,169 $22,925 $35,094 Other material and construction costs: Foundation walls & excavation Exterior walls (brick and curtain) Doors TOTAL Material & Labor Costs $62,234 $177,797 $15,200 $255,231 Average per floor tons $8,772 Total costs = approximately $290,000 + $20,000 per week (crane cost) Independent Independent Adjusting schedule for new design: Tiein in Process Substructure Schedule Result of new design eliminated 355 days longer Adjusting schedule for new design: New design eliminates all tiein processes This is a substantial schedule and coordination advantage Tiein process: contractor must study locations on steel drawings openings are cut in brick for a surveyor to take measurements steel is fabricated Superstructure 455 days longer cut full size openings & grout base plates into pockets set steel pieces Enclosure 7 weeks longer mason returns to fill in area around beams in other words: a lot of tasks and coordination must take place 2
Presentation Agenda and Construction Features Analysis Analysis Research Original extremely tight site lots of activities must share space ANALYSIS GOALS: relieve site congestion safer work site increase productivity/ reduce schedule Original Jobsite Trailers/Parking PROBLEM: located too close to construction activities Focus on Jobsite and parking Material Cranes Truck and delivery routes Jobsite Trailers/Parking SOLUTION: relocate offsite, near by area northeast of site is open and could moved to here University actually said this would have been feasible had this been proposed to them Material Storage PROBLEM: no designated area on site, materials must arrive on site as needed 3
Material Storage SOLUTION: relocate to area across the street excess material could be stored here would open a larger time window for material deliveries to site Cranes PROBLEM: no site crane is being used, contractors bring in own mobile as necessary. This requires the need for regulation on the part of the CM Cranes SOLUTION: remain the same crane policy will remain the same note: the largest crane will be that of the steel erector 3900T model (155 ton capacity) Truck/Delivery Routes PROBLEM: all excavation must be hauled directly off campus, since no area nearby to temporarily dump dirt Truck/Delivery Routes SOLUTION: keep existing truck route the same, but create an area where excavated material can be stored Jobsite Trailers Jobsite Parking Material Storage Cranes Site Deliveries Truck Hauling OVERALL : Conclusions Less Congestion Schedule Reduction Feasibility Good Good Fair Fair Fair No Change X X 4
Presentation Agenda and Construction Features Analysis Analysis Research Research GOALS Learn about asbestos and its role in construction today What is it? Where can it be found? Advantages and of its use Organizations today Relation to Bioscience Research project Summarize results in a one page asbestos guide What is asbestos? naturally occurring mineral can be separated into smaller and smaller fibers nearly indestructible widely used in 1930s through 1970s combined with other materials to form asbestoscontaining materials banned in the early 1970s Where can it be found? found in many different locations around U.S. many kinds of buildings especially in older facilities asbestoscontaining materials can be found in items such as: duct insulation cement pipes vinyl flooring roofing felt plasters chalkboards fireproofing materials adhesives high temp. gaskets thermal & duct joint tape and much more! Advantages & Disadvantages Organizations Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ADVANTAGES one of best insulators known to man fairly cheap to manufacture & install many uses for ACMs as shown in the previous table DISADVANTAGES health hazards if inhaled (damaged asbestos releases fibers invisible to naked eye) asbestosis, mesothelioma, & gastrointestinal cancers banned in 1970s, and now is being removed from many facilities prior to demolition serves to protect human health & the environment established in 1970 repairing damage already done to environment, as well as establish new criteria to guide us U.S. Occupational and Health Administration (OSHA) formed in 1971 assure safety of workers set/enforce standards, provide training and education 5
Bioscience Research project involves demolition and asbestos removal on the existing BiologyPsychology Definition Summary Guide Summary Guide "any of several minerals (as chrysotile) Properties resistant to chemicals and heat that readily separate into long flexible fibers, that have been implicated as does not evaporate or dissolve in water causes of certain cancers, and that often combined with other materials to form have been used especially formerly as asbestoscontaining materials (ACMs) fireproof insulating materials." Locations all around the United States, especially in older facilities ACMs found in materials listed in Table 3.1 History widely used in 1930s through 1970s before being banned in the 1970s due to health hazards Advantages Safety great insulator fairly cheap and easy to manufacture and install Keep people informed on locations of ACMs Disadvantages Organizations hazardous fibers can be inhaled into lungs proven to cause diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and gastrointestinal cancers Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Look out for your own safety, as well as the safety of others Contact supervisor if damaged asbestos is discovered U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) University of Maryland handles all asbestos control Only certified professionals should be allowed in these areas Presentation Agenda Summary and Construction Features Analysis Analysis Research Analysis cost of constructing new wall system: about $300,000 adds 9 to 10 weeks during construction however, the process and coordination of the steel tieins is eliminated completely Analysis alternate proposals relieve site congestion can increase productivity and reduce schedule Research learned about asbestos in construction today constructed a to inform those unfamiliar Special Thanks Presentation Agenda Special Thanks to AE Faculty AE Classmates Barton Malow Company Pennsylvania State University University of Maryland Family& Friends and Construction Features Analysis Analysis Research 6

Additional Slides Independent Independent Substructure Schedule Comparison Superstructure Schedule Comparison Original: Original: Revised: Revised: Independent Independent Enclosure Schedule Comparison Courtyard Comparison Original Courtyard Design: Original: 3500 SF closed off completely only accessible from buildings Proposed Courtyard Design: Revised: 4350 SF open through 2 sides easily accessible from outside 7
Independent Features Stairs & Elevators Owner Expectations Legend stairwell elevator The University of Maryland set a 2year schedule for the project This thesis proposed several ways to possibly shorten this schedule instead of July 0406, perhaps building could be ready for start of summer 2006 Quality is important because it is a research lab building, and the owner has given it a 2 year construction period to ensure this Even if schedule is not shortened, more time and effort can now be spent on improving building quality Features Lessons Learned Usually every change requires a tradeoff. For example: Higher cost of construction vs. Schedule reduction No tieins needed vs. Different aesthetics Less congestion for workers vs. Less usable campus area for U. of MD What may originally appear a simple change, affects whole project 8
