5 Substrate design must be in accordance with BCA (Building Code of Australia) requirements. Surfaces must be installed to manufacturers requirements, suitable for use and include sufficient falls to waste. Surfaces must be clean and contaminant free. Surfaces must be sound and have a light even texture. Masonry should be flush pointed and all defects in existing surfaces made good. All surfaces must be dry (unless a specific damp surface membrane is used). Damp surfaces must be primed with suitable surface primer before membrane application. Weak or dusty surfaces must be consolidated before membrane application. Install appropriate puddle flanges or similar, coving and / or sealant to all joints and junctions. Waterproofing System Choice Always ensure that chosen membrane is fit for purpose. When To Waterproof Only when surface is completely dry. Only when environmental conditions are suitable and adequate air flow is provided to assist cure. Do not waterproof in extreme climatic conditions, or if moisture is expected during the curing phase.

6 Waterproofing Membrane Ensure substrate is completely dry before membrane application. Membrane should only be applied as per recommended coverage rates and film builds. Do not thin membrane with anything unless it is to be used as a prime coat and recommended by the manufacturer. Apply coat 1 evenly. Do not try and achieve too thick a film build per coat, especially in the corners. Apply coat 2 at 90⁰ to coat 1, to ensure any low points are rectified. Membrane must be protected from moisture during the cure phase. Ensure that the membrane is inspected for damage prior to over coating. Conduct any pond testing to manufacturers specifications and dry surface after test. If membrane is to be back filed against, ensure that protection board or similar is installed. Inspect membrane upon completion of after trades, to ensure that any penetrations are waterproofed or any damage repaired. Always ensure sufficient airflow is provided during the cure phase.

36 All surfaces must be clean all contaminants including dirt, dust, grease, oil, curing compounds, cement laitance, algae etc must be removed with suitable cleaner. If surface has been acid etched, acid must be neutralised before sealer is applied. All surfaces must be sound and dry When To Seal Recommended to seal in the late morning or early afternoon after substrate has released moisture. Slip Resistance Gloss or satin sealers may increase the slipperiness of the coated surface. If slip resistance is critical, do not apply a coating sealer. In grip critical situations, such as sloping surfaces or where standing water may be present, natural penetrating sealers are recommended. Slip resistance may be improved with the addition of slip resistant agents into solvent based gloss and satin sealers. Do not seal if surface or ambient temperature is too high or too low. Do not seal if rain is expected during cure time, or if humidity is too high or expected to be during initial cure phase.

37 Sealer Conduct surface porosity test before sealer application, by adding water droplets to the surface. If water is readily absorbed and surface darkens, the surface is open to seal. If water is not absorbed, the surface is not open to seal. A trail patch is always recommended to assess final finish and slip resistant characteristics. Apply sealer as per recommended coverage rates only. Do not over apply sealer. Only thin sealer with appropriate solvent, to assist with initial coat penetration. Always ensure sealer coats are applied in an even film. Sealed area may be subjected to light foot traffic after 24 hours. Do not expose sealed area to heavy traffic until full cure has been achieved. Do not expose sealed area to moisture until full cure has been achieved. Ensure that adequate air flow is provided to assist with the curing process.
