Passive House Northwest AIA CEU Provider Foam-Free Passive House Case Study & Madison Haus Case Study phnw L.Johnson & R.Foster & O.Martin 3/29/2018
Course Description A case study of the Radiance Cohousing project and it's foam-free building techniques. Also A case study for the Madison Haus.
Learning Objectives At the end of the this course, participants will be able to: 1. Define what qualities differentiate high-performance airtight enclosures from typical construction and how those qualities are evolving. 2. Describe practitioner concerns of foam insulation hindering efforts to meet the evolving high-performance qualities. 3. Describe how a foam free enclosure can improve durability and provide a low carbon or carbon negative Passive House building 4. Describe practical methodologies practitioners can implement, to successfully produce a Passive House enclosure that is foam free.

Thousands of Projects; Three Key Findings 1. Foam, drywall, caulk, and micro-porous membranes are not reliable air barriers 1. Air transported moisture is the 2 nd leading cause of building failure (BSC/DOE/etc) 1. Minimize risk by having inboard and outboard air tightness with balanced heat recovery ventilation
Turn BS into Building Science: Everybody knows foam blows and most ventilation sucks
Thermal Bypass Diagrams Lesson 1: Air Seal. All Sides. Keep Stuff Warm. Thermal bypass describes heat loss that gets around insulation, including:. Factor of 4.8 or a Fraunhofer Institute, Stuttgart Germany Credit: Mark Siddall, Building Green Magazine 12

Poorly insulated walls are often heated dry. Well built assemblies dry through vapor diffusion (or they don t dry) 17
A New Frontier of Building Science. You need to assume that the building will get wet, somehow, at some point in time. Stuff happens. So you need a moisture-tolerant design. Anton TenWolde, physicist at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory via GBA post Are Dew Point Calculations Really Necessary 18
