4 CREATING AN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE Design elements To avoid a visually conflicting architectural character, a controlled materiality and consistent facade treatment is critical to create a coherent development. Chosen materiality will reflect the region and locality. Simple compositions conceived for the facades shall be executed with the use of simple, regulating architectural lines. Building Walls Feature walls Feature cladding paired with rendered walls Building walls materials will be predominently exposed brick wall with rendered wall to main street facade. A combination of exposed and rendered brick wall provides visual interest to the housing design. Feature walls create a contemporary aesthetic and are often used to balance the proportions of facades. These dominant features can be painted in a contrasting colour or built of a different material to the recessive walls beyond. Due to local construction systems, houses at Crest Landsdale residential development will be predominantly brick. Using feature cladding material such as tiles, stone and natural timber are simple method to create a contemporary aesthetic. 4

5 CREATING AN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE Design elements Porch and Verandah Trims and Detailing Roof Forms and Materials Porch and verandah elements improve the visual look of a house through layering and an increased perceived depth of facades in their shadowing effects. These are also important elements for urban design - provide passive surveillance of the street (for safety and security) and create vibrant streetscapes. The trims of a building such as window and door frames, verandah posts, exposed beams, canopy. Elements which are attached to the shell of the house are critical to its overall character and visual quality in contemporary architecture. The roof form of the individual building is critical to its sympathetic relationship with the adjoining streetscape. A coherent roofscape is important to create a common architectural language and sense of place in new developments. Simple roof forms are common across the contemporary examples, including pitch, flat, skillion. 5

6 CREATING AN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE Colour & Material Palette A colour palette should be derived from the natural landscape and flora common to the Landsdale area. Consideration must also be given to local housing examples. Each of the colour has been selected to create a sense of coherency and identity across new housing in Crest residential estate at Landsdale.
